EXPERIMENT NO 14 PRC1 LAB MANUAL

Determine Tensile Strength Of Concrete By Using Double Punch Test

01.STANDARD:
ASTM C39/C39M-17b & C31/C31M-17
02.INTRODUCTION:
This method i.e. double punch test is an indirect method for determination of tensile strength of
concrete. It is somewhat based on theory of perfect plasticity. We have already performed some
experiments to find out the tensile strength of concrete.
03.SIGNIFICANCE:
It tells us about the TENSILE STRENGTH and casting conditions of the specimen.
04.APPARATUS:
 Testing Machine
 Steel Punches
 Molds
 Casted Specimen

4.1SPECIMEN 4.2MOLDS

05.PRECAUTIONS:
While performing it should be kept in mind
 Mixed the concrete thoroughly
 Punch is always placed in the center of specimen.
06.PROCEDURE:
First we placed the Specimen between two jaws of machine. Then we placed the punches on the
upper and lower side of the specimen. Then applied the compressive load by machine on the
punches.
The specimen splits across the vertical diametrical planes.
07.OBSERVATIONS & CALCULATIONS:
Formula
Fr = Q/[π(1.2bH-a2)]
Specimen No 1
Max applied load = 5.5 Tons = 53955 N
b = 75mm
a = 19.05 mm
H = 150mm
Fr = 1.306819 MPa
Specimen No 2
Max Applied load = 6.3 Tons = 61803 N
b = 75mm
a = 19.05 mm
H = 150mm
Fr = 1.496902 MPa
MEAN :
1.40186 MPa
08.RESULT:
The tensile strength of concrete found to be 1.40186
