ParkAvenue 1997-1999
1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Drain the coolant into a clean container for reuse.
CAUTION
When draining the coolant, keep in mind that cats and dogs are attracted by ethylene glycol antifreeze, and are quite likely to drink any that is left in an uncovered container or in
puddles on the ground. This will prove fatal in sufficient quantity. Always drain the coolant into a sealable container. Coolant should be reused unless it is contaminated or several
years old.
1. Remove the right side sound insulator. Remove the underdash and splash cover covering the heater hoses in the engine compartment.
2. Disconnect the heater hoses from the heater core. You may need tool J37097 or equivalent hose clamp removal pliers in order to remove the hoses.
2. Remove the heater core cover screws, then remove the cover.
3. Unfasten the heater core retainers, then remove the heater core assembly.

To install:
1. Install the heater core assembly and heater core cover, securing with the retainers. Tighten to 12 inch lbs. (1.4 Nm).
2. If equipped with electronic climate control, perform the following:

5. If equipped with electronic climate control, remove the programmer as outlined in the following steps.
6. For Buick and Oldsmobile, remove the programmer as follows:
A. Open the glove compartment, disengage the stops and swing the door down.
B. Detach the electrical and vacuum connectors.
C. Remove the driver temperature valve link rod.
D. Unfasten the screws and remove the programmer from the vehicle.

A. Unbolt the PCM from its attaching bracket and allow to hang by its wires.
B. Detach the vacuum and side electrical connector from the programmer.
C. Remove the temperature valve link rod by reaching up through the PCM bracket to get to the rod.
D. Unfasten the programmer attaching screws.
E. Remove the temperature valve actuator connector by reaching up through the PCM bracket to get to the connector.
F. Remove the programmer from the vehicle.
8. Remove the heater core cover screws, then remove the cover.
9. Unfasten the heater core retainers, then remove the heater core assembly.
To install:
1. Position the heater core in the vehicle and install the retaining screws. Tighten the screws 12 inch lbs. (1.4 Nm).
2. Install the heater core cover and attaching screws. Tighten the screws to 12 inch lbs. (1.4 Nm).
3. For Buick and Oldsmobile, if equipped with electronic climate control, perform the following:
A. Place the programmer in position and secure with the retaining screws. Tighten the screws to 12 inch lbs. (1.4 Nm).
B. Attach the electrical and vacuum connectors.
C. Adjust the valve link rod by starting the vehicle, setting the temperature to 90° F (32°C). Allow at least 45 seconds for the programmer motor to move the output crank
to its full hot position. Move the temperature valve to the full hot position and snap the valve link into the retainer on the output crank.
D. Install the glove compartment door by inserting and pushing forward.
E. For Pontiac, if equipped with electronic climate control, perform the following:
F. Place the programmer in position.
G. Reach up through the PCM bracket and attach the temperature valve actuator connector.
H. Install the programmer attaching screws and tighten to 12 inch lbs. (1.4 Nm).

I. Attach the electrical and vacuum connectors.
J. Attach the temperature valve link rod to the air mix valve.
K. Adjust the valve link rod by starting the vehicle, setting the temperature to 90°F (32°C). Allow at least 45 seconds for the programmer motor to move the output crank
to its full hot position. Move the temperature valve to the full hot position and snap the valve link into the retainer on the output crank.
L. Position the PCM to the bracket and secure with the mounting bolts.
4. If equipped with manual climate control, install the A/C temperature valve actuator as follows:
A. Position the actuator and secure with the retaining screws. Tighten the screws to 12 inch lbs. (1.4 Nm).
B. Attach the electrical connector to the actuator.
Before connecting the temperature valve link rod during installation, you must adjust the rod.
1. Adjust the temperature valve link rod by starting the vehicle, setting the fan to HIGH and the temperature to full hot. Allow at least 45 seconds for the A/C temperature
valve actuator to move to the full hot position. Move the temperature valve to the full hot position, then snap the temperature valve link rod into the temperature valve.
2. Install the instrument panel assembly, as outlined in Section 10 of this manual.
1. Connect the heater hoses to the core, making sure the clamps are in the proper position.

To install:
Heater core
Heater core straps and retaining bolts, then, tighten to 18 inch lbs. (1.5 Nm)
Air filter access cover and the heater core cover screws, then tighten to 12 inch lbs. (1.4 Nm)
