Weathering and

Photography!
4th Grade Doral Academy Arts Integration
Project
Ms. Stubblefield, Mrs. Saxe, Mrs. Nunez, Mr.
Martinez & Ms. Klosowski

Objectives:
Fourth grade students will participate in an arts integration project to support learning of science and art
standards!

 Art Standards:
o VA:Cr2.4.1 Explore and invent art-making techniques and approaches.
o VA:Cr2.4.2 When making works of art, utilize & care for materials, tools, & equipment in a manner
that prevents danger to oneself & others.
o VA:Cr2.4.3 Document, describe, and represent regional constructed environments
o VA:Cr3.4.1 Revise artwork in progress on the basis of insights gained through peer discussion.
o VA:Re9.4.1 Apply one set of criteria to evaluate more than one work of art.
 Science Standards:
o Make observations and/or measurements to provide evidence of the effects of weathering or the
rate of erosion by water, ice, wind, or vegetation.
o Identify evidence from patterns in rock formations and fossils in rock layers to support an
explanation for changes in a landscape over time.
Field Trip:
Each student will attend a class field trip to Red Rock Canyon to observe rocks and landforms. During the
field trip, students will use their knowledge of photography standards to take photographs of rocks that
represent weathering and erosion.

 PHOTOGRAPH #1- Micro Composition of Landform: This picture should include the whole landmark
with the background - use a wide angle or photograph image from a distance: the landmark will
appear small. The photograph should be printed in color on 5x7 photo paper. This image informs the
viewer of the overall effects of erosion on the landform and should include a caption that explains the
erosive effects in the image.
 PHOTOGRAPH #2- Macro Composition of Landform: This picture should include only a small aspect of
the landmark – it is photographed up close or with a camera’s telescopic feature or lens by zooming
in. The photograph should be printed in color on 5x7 photo paper. This image informs the viewer of
the detailed effects of erosion on the landform and should include a caption that explains the erosive
effects in the image.
The words Macro and Micro: The word macro originated from Greek makros ‘long, large’ whereas the
word micro originated from Greek mikros ‘small’. Macro refers to large things. Micro refers to small
things. Micro is also used as an adjective which means something that is extremely small. In
photography, the word macro means relating to macrophotography. Your lens has a macro setting for
shooting big close-ups.

Prior to the Field Trip:

In art class, students explore photography as an artistic medium, practice use of basic to intermediate
features of a digital camera or device, and discuss artistic elements and principles to optimize
compositional choices. They will learn about micro and macro photographs.
In science class, students study types of weathering and erosion. They also study the soil composition of
different environments. They learn how big rocks break into smaller rocks by physical weathering and
how acid rain affects rocks in chemical weathering.
On Site at Red Rock:
Students should wear their uniform and bring layered clothing in preparation for ALL weather. A small
pack like a hip pack or a drawstring sports pack might be helpful. Water bottles are optional but should
be able to be carried hands free (in their packs or sacks) and must be leak proof as to not ruin cameras.
Students may bring ANY type of photographic device and will be responsible for that devices safety. The
student will be responsible for having a full charge and sufficient memory available for the day’s
photographs.
Students who need a device should email their teacher 1 week prior to the field trip. Students in need of
a device will share a school camera. If able, bring a labeled SD card for the shared camera.
Final Project:
Students will be responsible for printing their color photographs on 5 x 7 photo paper. In class, they will
create a poster that shares their predictions about erosion and rock formations. The photographs will
serve as evidence and illustration of their predictions. Students will type captions for their photographs in
class. Captions should describing the erosive force and its effects on the landform’s formation. Posters
will be displayed for families to view on Arts Integration Night on November 13.

PHOTOS MUST BE ORIGINAL: STUDENTS WILL RECEIVE 0 POINTS FOR COPIED MATERIAL
PHOTOS MUST BE 5 x 7, IN COLOR AND ON PHOTO PAPER FOR FULL POINTS
