SINGLE TASK JOB ANALYSIS WORKSHEET, NIOSH LIFTING EQUATION

Department Job Description

Assignment 4 Loading roll of paper in machine
Job Title

Analyst's Name

Date
Step 1. Measure and record task variables Estimated
Object Hand Location (cm) Vertical Asymmetry Angle (deg) Freq. Rate Duration Object
Weight (kg) Origin Destination Distance (cm) Origin Destination lifts/min hr Coupling
L (avg) L (max) H V H V D A A F Dur C
16 16 38 70 50 25 45 0 0 0.0083 0.25 poor
< 0.2 <1
Step 2. Determine the multipliers and compute the RWLs
RWL = LC * HM * VM * DM * AM * FM * CM

Origin RWL = 23 0.66 0.99 0.92 1.00 1.00 0.90 = 12.36

Destination RWL = 23 0.50 0.85 0.92 1.00 1.00 0.90 = 8.09

Step 3. Compute the Lifting Index

Object Weight (L) 16
Origin Lifting Index = = = 1.29
RWL 12.36

Object Weight (L) 16

Destination Lifting Index = = = 1.98
RWL 8.09

Calculate (1=yes)? 1

LI origin is OK. LI destination is physically stressful for some healthy workers. To make improvements consider the following:
- we are probably not able to modify the machine such that the hands at the destination can be higher, thus increasing VM and DM
- at origin hands are 38-25=13 cm in front of body which cannot be decreased because of size of roll
- at destination hands are at 50 cm, which is difficult to decrease unless we hold the roll between the knees
So, only practical way to reduce LI is to reduce the weight of the roll
or to modify the cart such that the roll can be lowered to the desired destination height, thus eliminating the need to lift or lower
