1 Introduction
1.1 Functions
The BBU3910 is a baseband control unit. Compared with the BBU3900, its backplane has
greater switching capability and the baseband boards installed in slots 0 to 5 all can process
baseband signals. The BBU3910 has the following functions:
Manages the entire base station system in terms of operation, maintenance, and system
clock.
Processes signaling messages.
Provides physical ports for information exchange between the base station and the
transport network.
Provides an OM channel between the base station and the LMT, SMT, or U2000.
Processes uplink and downlink baseband signals.
Provides CPRI ports for communication with the RF modules.
Provides ports for communication with environment monitoring devices.
A base station can be configured with a maximum of two BBU3910s or one BBU3900 and
one BBU3910 to provide higher processing capabilities.
1.2 Appearance
The BBU3910, which has a case structure, is 19 inches wide and 2 U high. The BBU3910 can
be installed in an indoor or outdoor protective cabinet.
Figure 1-1 shows the appearance of the BBU3910.
1.3 Boards
The BBU3910 can be configured with the following boards and units:
Main control and transmission board: Universal Main Processing & Transmission unit
(UMPT)
Baseband processing board: Universal BaseBand Processing unit (UBBP)
Universal Transmission Processing unit (UTRP)
Universal Satellite card and Clock Unit (USCU)
Universal Power and Environment Interface Unit d (UPEUd)
Universal Environment Interface Unit (UEIU)
FANd unit
1.3.1 UMPT
The UMPT is a universal main control and transmission unit for the BBU3910. It manages the
entire eNodeB in terms of OM, processes signaling messages, and provides clock signals for
the BBU3910. There are two types of UMPTs: UMPTb1 and UMPTb2. Table 1-1 describes
the differences between each UMPT type.
Panel
Figure 1-2 shows the UMPTb1 panel.
Functions
The UMPT performs the following functions:
Controls and manages the entire base station in terms of configuration, equipment,
performance monitoring, radio resources, and active/standby switchovers.
Processes signaling messages.
Provides a reference clock, transmission ports, and an OM channel to the LMT or
U2000.
Interconnects two BBU3910s and exchanges control information, transmission
information, and clock information between them.
Ports
Table 1-2 describes the ports on the UMPT.
1.3.2 UBBP
There are four types of UBBPd: UBBPd3, UBBPd4, UBBPd5 and UBBPd6. The UBBPd is
available as of SRAN9.0.
Panel
The UBBPd3, UBBPd4, UBBPd5 and UBBPd6 have the same panel, as shown in Figure 1-4.
Function
The UBBP performs the following functions:
Provides CPRI ports for communication with the RF modules.
Provides a port for interconnection with another baseband board to share the baseband
resources.
Port
Table 1-3 describes the ports on the UBBPd3, UBBPd4, UBBPd5 or UBBPd6.
1.3.3 UTRP
The type of UTRP is UTRPc.
Panel
Figure 1-5 shows the UTRPc panel.
Functions
The UTRPc is available as of eRAN3.0. The UTRPc performs the following functions:
− Provides transmission for the LTE networks and enables these networks to share the
same IPSec tunnel.
− Provides two 100 M/1000 M Ethernet electrical ports and performs Ethernet MAC
layer functions, including sending and receiving Ethernet link data and parsing MAC
addresses. Provides four 10 M/100 M/1000 M Ethernet electrical ports and performs
the functions of the MAC layer and physical layer.
Ports
Table 1-4 describes the ports on the UTRPc.
1.3.4 USCU
There are two types of USCU: USCUb11 and USCUb14.
Panel
The panel of the USCUb11 is the same as that of the USCUb14. Figure 1-6 shows the
USCUb11/USCUb14 panel.
Functions
The USCU performs the following functions:
The USCUb11 provides ports to communicate with the RGPS (for example the reused
equipment of the customer) and BITS equipment. It does not support GPS signals.
The USCUb14 does not support RGPS signals. It contains a UBLOX satellite card.
Ports
The ports on the USCUb11 and USCUb14 are the same. Table 1-5 describes the ports on the
USCUb11/USCUb14.
1.3.5 UPEUd
The UPEUd is a power module for the BBU3910.
Panel
Figure 1-7 shows the UPEUd panel.
Functions
The UPEU performs the following functions:
Provides two ports with each transmitting one RS485 signal and two ports with each
transmitting four Boolean signals. The Boolean signals can only be dry contact or open
collector (OC) signals.
The UPEUd converts -48 V DC input power into +12 V DC and provides an output
power of 650 W.
Ports
Table 1-6 describes the ports on the UPEUd.
1.3.6 UEIU
The UEIU transmits information reported by the environment monitoring device and alarm
information to the main control board.
Panel
Figure 1-8 shows the UEIU panel.
Functions
The UEIU performs the following functions:
Provides two ports, each transmitting one RS485 signal.
Provides two ports, each transmitting four Boolean signals, which can only be dry
contact or OC signals.
Ports
Table 1-7 describes the ports on the UEIU.
1.3.7 FAN
The FANd is a fan unit for the BBU3910.
Panel
Figure 1-9 shows the FANd panel.
Functions
The FANd controls the rotation speed of the fans and monitors the temperature of the fan
module. The FANd reports the status of the fans and the fan module to the BBU and dissipates
heat from the BBU.
