Construction Management Ce402
Autumn 2017
Course and Evaluation Plan
1. ABSTRACT
This course introduces the basic aspects of a Civil Engineering Construction from the point of view of planning
and management. It starts with an introduction to the role of construction managers and the contract system
of carrying out a project. There are different management techniques for efficient execution of a project. The
important ones of these techniques will be discussed.
2. OBJECTIVE
The objective of this course is to develop a capability to handle the time, material and money management of a
construction project efficiently, with appropriate quality standard.
4. COURSE SYLLABUS
Construction as industry and its challenges, Role of construction management, Methods of construction
managements, Basic requirements of construction management: Learning structures, Life cycle of
construction projects: Examples of real projects and its learning requirements.
Stages of awarding contract, types of contract, contract documents, arbitration and settlement of disputes,
contract laws and handling of contracts, commissioning of project.
Introduction to network based project management techniques: Defining activities and their
interdependence, drawing of network, time and resource estimations, use of network as scheduling

Assignments i
a) Graduates become able to apply knowledge of science, mathematics and basic engineering
principles to analyse individual components of civil engineering systems
b) Graduates become able to design components of civil engineering systems using rigorous
methods and standard codes of practice
c) Graduates become able to visualize a complete civil engineering system, isolate it to various
components, determine the interactions among various components or with the
environment, understand the behaviours of each component and the system, and after
designing, integrate each component to obtain the whole system
d) Graduates become able to conduct experiments, observe and interpret the results
e) Graduates develop self-learning, independent thinking and creative thinking capabilities
f) Graduates learn basic techno-economic and techno-legal aspects of engineering projects, and
preliminary aspects of project management
g) Graduates understand the importance of non-engineering environment and professional
ethics, and acquire the confidence to interact with the external factors
h) Graduates can use computing and IT tools to improve efficiency and accuracy.
