Asuncio’n

Asuncio’n is the capital and largest city of Republic of Paraguay which obtained its independence
in 1811. It lies on the Paraguay River, near the junction of Paraguay River and Pilcomoyo River.
Asuncio’n is the center of Paraguay’s culture life. Well-known institutions include the National
Unversity, the Paraguayan Atheneum, the National Library, the Academy of Guarani Culture and
an excellent museum.
Most of the people in Asuncio’n work in trade and light industries. A railroad connects the
connect city with Buenos Aires, the capital of Argentina. However, riverboats carry most of
Paraguay’s freight and passenger traffic. Asuncio’n, with its excellent river harbor, serves as the
country’s major port. Asuncio’n has also an airport.
Juan de Salazar, a Spanish pioneer, founded Asuncio’n in 1537. The city served as the major seat
of government in the Plata River basin until 1617. President Carlos Antonio Lopez began to
levees on the river, started many public buildings, and laid out the principal streets. Since 1930,
many industries and thousands of new homes have been built in Asuncio’n.

Have you ever been to Fort Vredeburg? Well, it is a fortress built by Dutch in Yogyakarta during
colonial times. It is located in front of Gedung Agung, one of the seven presidential palaces in
Indonesia and near the Sultan Palace which is called Kraton. The fortress was built in 1765 to protect
the dutch governor. It is surrounded by a trench that is still visible.

This square shaped fortress has a watchtower at each of its four corners. In the past, the Dutch
