Part A

Solution to Question Part A1:

HAIR DRYER
A hair dryer, hairdryer or blow dryer is an electromechanical device that blows ambient or hot air over
damp hair to speed the evaporation of water to dry the hair. Blow dryers enable better control over the
shape and style of hair, by accelerating and controlling the formation of temporary hydrogen bonds within
each strand. These bonds are powerful (allowing stronger hair shaping than the sulfur bonds formed
by permanent waving products) but are temporary and extremely vulnerable to humidity. They disappear
with a single washing of the hair
Hairstyles using blow dryers usually have volume and discipline, which can be further improved with styling
products and hairbrushes during drying to add tension, hold and lift.

The hair dryer dries your hair by speeding up the evaporation of water from the hair's surface. The hot air
emitted from a hair dryer increases the temperature of the air surrounding each strand of hair. Since warm
air can contain more moisture than air at room temperature, more water can move from your hair into the
air. The increase in temperature also makes it easier for the individual molecules in a water droplet to
overcome their attraction to one another and move from a liquid to a gas state.

1. Power requirement for the selected application

Hair dryers or blow dryers are popular household devices used for drying your hair by
blasting cool, warm or hot air towards wet hair and increasing the evaporation of water.
Most hairdryers will have a power rating label to indicate the maximum wattage, it typically
ranges from 800 to 1800 watts. The energy use of a hair dryer depends which mode it is
using, unheated air can use as low as 70 watts of power. A typical hair dryer on high heat
will use around 1500 watts

Voltage Requirements of hair dryer

hair dryers run on a lower voltage (about 120 volts). You'll need one that works at a
higher voltage, about 240 volts, when traveling internationally. A dual voltage hair dryer has
two voltage options. If you want to be extra safe overseas, keep it on low versus high power when
in use.
Specification of motor
The motor used in hair dryer is a small permanent magnet DC motor. This is because the
motor runs at a high speed (18000-20000 rpm) which is not possible by small AC motors
which are generally shaded pole motors whose speed is limited by frequency.

To get DC input for the motor, the heater coil is used as a potential divider. A small AC
voltage is tapped from the heater and then rectified and smoothed to feed the motor.

Most hair dryers consist of electric heating coils and a fan (usually powered by a universal
motor). The heating element in most dryers is a bare, coiled nichrome wire that is wrapped around mica
insulators. Nichrome is used because of two important properties: It is a poor conductor of electricity and it
does not oxidize when heated.
Many of these dryers have "normal mode" buttons that turn off the heater and blow room-temperature air
while the button is pressed. This function helps to maintain the hairstyle by setting it. The colder air
reduces frizz and can help to promote shine in the hair.
Many feature "ionic" operation, to reduce the build-up of static electricity in the hair,[4] though the efficacy
of ionic technology is of some debate.[5] Manufacturers claim this makes the hair "smoother". Some
stylists[who?] consider the introduction of ionic technology to be one of the most important advances in
the beauty industry.[3]
Hair dryers are available with attachments, such as diffusers, airflow concentrators, and comb nozzles.

 A diffuser is an attachment that is used on hair that is fine, colored, permed or naturally curly. It
diffuses the jet of air, so that the hair is not blown around while it dries. The hair dries more slowly, at
a cooler temperature, and with less physical disturbance. This makes it so that the hair is less likely to
frizz and it gives the hair more volume.
 An airflow concentrator does the opposite of a diffuser. It makes the end of the blow dryer narrower
and thus helps to concentrate the heat into one spot to make it dry rapidly.
 The comb nozzle attachment is the same as the airflow concentrator, but it ends with comb-like teeth
so that the user can dry the hair using the dryer without a brush or comb.

Discussion on maintenance and chance of failure of hair dryer

Maintenance of hair dryer

 Letting your hair dryer cool on surface that is resistant to heat once you have
finished using it.
 Never leave your hair dryer unattended when it is turned on.
 Switch your hair dryer off when you are not using it.
 Don’t block the air openings of your hair dryer.
 Keep the cord and Power plug away from heated surfaces
 Make sure the cord and plug do not get wet. Do not submerge your hair dryer in waste or
rinse it.
 Always unplug your hair dryer from the mains when you are not using it.
 Check the hair dryer on a frequent basis to see if there are any signs of damage. If you do
notice any damage replace the hair dryer.
 Do not use your hair dryer when you are near a sink filled with water or while in the bath.
Chance of failure
1. Not using a heat protectant
2. Not sectioning your hair
3. Choosing the right attachment
4. Holding it in the wrong way
5. Not using the right brush
6. Not drying your hair completely
7. Use a finishing spray
Parts and functions of hair dryer
PART FUNCTION

Cover This Protects all the internal parts of the Hair dryer.
Side Cover It protects the Motor and acts as a vent for the inflow of
air.It also prevents people from touching the motor
accidentally.
Nozzle This concentrates the flow of air in a particular direction.
Motor Its main function is to turn the fan found inside of the
dryer
Fan It blows air over the heating coils
Mica Sheet (Resisting This prevents the plastic cover from heating up or
Paper) softening due to excessive heat
Heating coils Heats up when electricity is passed through it.
Bracket (Metal wire Net) Protects things from getting into the heater.
Switch It regulates the amount of air that is allowed to pass over a
given time.
Electrical wire Gets electrical energy from the source and powers the
whole system

5. Justification for using some other motor to suit the same application
AC Motor can be used because their powerful airflow dries hair quickly. They tend to be heavier
than DC hairdryers because of the larger, more powerful motor, but they also have a longer life.
