ES031 ENGINEERING DATA ANALYSIS . LEARNING EVIDENCE NO. 3
CORRELATION & SIMPLE LINEAR REGRESSION

The 2nd Year Engineering Students of Cebu Institute of Technology – University

conducted a study on the flight time of a paper dropped from a specific height with
different wing lengths. They had to determine whether the wing length of the paper and
the flight time had a relationship with each other.

State your assumptions:

 In doing the experiment, we had chosen a height of cm. We made

this constant across all trials.
 No air disruption
 +++
Show the following using the data gathered:

PART III: Test on Correlation

Step 1: (State the Null and Alternative Hypothesis)

Ho:   0
(Wing length and Flight time had no relationship with each other.)
Ha:   0
(Wing length and Flight time had a relationship with each other.)

Step 2: (Choose the level of significance, type of test, degrees of freedom and sample
size)

 0.05 , Two-Tailed Test , Df= 5-2= 3 , n=5

Step 3: (Identify the test statistic)

Df= 3 ,  0.05

t =  3.182
t

Step 4: (Determine the rejection region)

Step 5: (Calculate the standardized test statistic)

(0.9857  0)
t c
= = 10.1316586
(1  (0.9857) 2 )

Step 6: (State the decision rule)

t c
 10.1316586  t t
 3.182 : Reject Ho
Step 7: (Interpretation or state the managerial rule)

At 5% level of significance, there is no enough evidence to conclude that there is

a significant correlation between the flight time and the wing length of a paper
helicopter.

PART IV: Linear Regression

ȳ= 11.112 / 5 = 2.224

x̅ = 35 / 5 = 7

B o
= 2.224 – (0.18846)(7)
= 0.90478

B = 0.18846 / 10
1

= 0.18846

y  Bo  B1 x1  

y= 0.90478 + 0.18846x
