INTERPRETATION OF LITERATURE

Objectives:

 To teach the students the technique of practical criticism based on the theories they have
studied.
 To make students independent of critics in the analysis of any given literary work.
 To teach the students to identify the literary devices used in unseen passages.

UNIT – 1: Formal Elements of Literature

 Literature as Deviance: Literary Diction & Syntax.


 Image (Visual & Auditory), Images of Endorsement, Illustration and Evocation
 Image as Objective- Correlative

UNIT- 2 :

 Tone
 Style
 Formal Operators: Ambivalence, Ambiguity, Paradox, Irony, etc.

UNIT- 3 : Analysing

 Fiction
 Non- Fiction
 Short Story

UNIT- 4 :

 Poetry
 Drama (Including One-Act Plays)

UNIT- 5: Metrical Analysis

Various aspects of English prosody like feet, metre, rhyme stanza, etc.

EVALUATION PATTERN

I. Continuous Assessments - Total Marks: 25

1. Two Written Tests & a Model Exam - 15 (Consolidated)

3. Attendance - 05
Total (1+2+3+) = 25 Marks

II. End Semester Exam- Total Marks: 75 (Duration: 3 hours)

Section - A (5x3=15)

* FIVE out of EIGHT

* Questions on features and concepts from the FIRST TWO units.

* Short notes or a paragraph questions should be answered in about 200 words.

Section – B ANAYSIS (4x15=60)

* An Unseen Passage from all four genres should be given with FIVE specific
questions that must be answered in 100 words each. [(5x3=15) x 4 genres =60]
