We use There is and There are to say that something exists.

Positive (+) Negative (-) Questions (?)

Singular

There is a library. There is not a library. Is there a library?


There’s a library. There isn’t a library.

Plural

There are three hotels. There are not three Are there three hotels?
hotels.

IMPORTANT!!!

• We use there is/ there’s with singular (a bakery) or uncountable (traffic)


nouns.
• We use there are with plural nouns (libraries, streets, etc.)
• We use ANY in questions with uncountable and plural nouns.
Eg. Are there any bakeries? / Is there any traffic?

• We use ANY in negative sentences.


Eg. There aren’t any bookshops / There aren’t any museums.

Is there a…? • Yes, there is.

• No there isn’t.

Are there any…? • Yes, there are.

• No, there aren’t.
