THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Introduction

A DC motor is a device which transforms the electrical energy into

mechanical energy. It generates energy using its process or motion. Its

movement is produced by the physical behavior electromagnetism. Dc motors

have inductors inside, which produce the magnetic field used to generate

movement. In this research topic, will focus more about how to use dc motor

as an alternative way to generate electricity and how it will help to the

community.

In addition, the country is surrounded by large bodies of water and

Pacific Ocean where 60% of typhoons were formed here. When a disaster

occurs like flashflood in a certain area, a power outage is expected to happen.

Having an electricity source would be a great help when a related

circumstance will happen to power devices such as mobile phones, flashlights

and radios is needed to contact relatives, to be updated with the news, and

when searching things in dark area.

Background of the Study

Power outages can happen unexpectedly for variety of reasons. It is

always nice to be prepared for a brownout, especially when living in a place

that is prone to power interruptions especially during a stormy weather.

Generator is one of the best alternative sources of electricity, the researchers’

focuses on dc motor as an alternative way to store electricity. It can make

families comfortable during brownout. But not all families could afford to
purchase due to its expensive price. It’s for this reason that this "improvised

generator” was conceptualized.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

Provided in this chapter is the summary of the review and related

literature both foreign and local, that is for the identification of future and on-
going research. Given that the focus of this effort on developing alternative
way to produce and store electrical energy by conducting through
investigation applied different strategies, familiarized such methods and well-
planned procedures we can be able to conduct a certain product that can help
us to successfully obtain the goal that we have as a researcher. Our research
has been studied by different researcher and the article the we have gathered
are proven and has been published all over the trusted sites in the internet
that is stated therein;

Faraday’s law of induction explains how the mechanical energy is

converted into an electric energy. A voltage is induced by a changing
magnetic field. With electromagnetic induction, an electric current can be
produced in a coil of wire by moving the magnet in or out of that coil, or by
moving the coil through the magnetic field. Either way, voltage is created
through motion as asserted by Friedl, S. (2018).

The alternative way to produce and store electrical energy aims to

provide a good quality of energy that can help a certain area that is prone to
electrical shortage. Dubois, M., Beauchamp, p., & Jarjour, R. (2012), Invented
an apparatus that it transferred energy from a cell to the cell of a battery.
Using a flywheel that connects to the individual electrical motor/alternator
through an electronic module it can surely store and release electrical energy
by using the flywheel. Energy produced by the rotating flywheel, the so called
rational kinetic energy. It has similar topic of the researchers a way a DC
motor needs a rotating flywheel to conduct mechanical power to electrical
energy.

According to Brian M. (2009), he stated that it is important to

understand that a generator does not actually create electrical energy.
Instead, it uses the mechanical energy supplied to it to force the movement of
electric changes present in the wire of its winding through an external electric
circuit. This flow of electric changes present in the wire of its winding through
an external electric circuit. This flow of electric changes constitutes the output
electric current supplied by the generator. This mechanism can be understood
by considering the generator to be analogous to a water pump, which causes
the flow of water but does not actually 'create' the water flowing through it.

It states that the researchers came up with a final design with the
components' configuration and specifications. That is their main purpose why
they come up to their study. In our case, this is also related to our topic, again
which is the electric generator, we will understand more further about the
given topic on how it will benefit to us and to the people who are in need the
most.

However, in Williams, C.B., (1998), the study of the analysis of a micro-

electric generator for microsystem supplies energy power to remote
microsystem that have no physical connection to the outside world is difficult,
and using batteries is not always appropriate. A solution is offered by the
device proposed in this paper, which generates electricity from mechanical
energy when embedded in a vibrating medium. In their own perspectives
regarding to their research topic, they focus more on analysis of using a
micro-electric generator, most especially for microsystem on how it generates
electricity or energy that is from the generator and from mechanical energy
when embedded in a vibrating medium. Therefore, Backhaus, S. (2004)
stated that traveling-wave thermoacoustic electric generator, heat engines
have been demonstrated to convert high-temperature heat to acoustic power
with high efficiency without using moving parts. Electrodynamic linear
alternators and compressors have been demonstrated high acoustic to
electric transduction efficiency as well as long maintenance-free lifetimes. By
optimizing a small-scale traveling-wave thermoacoustic engine for use with an
electrodynamic linear alternator, they have created a traveling-wave
thermoacoustic electric generator; it is a power conversion system that is
suitable only for demanding applications such as electricity generator aboard

7
spacecraft. To adopt and incorporate an understanding that would be
developed in the research.

As Scott E., et al. (1993). The rotating assembly is designed to have

adequate mass so that the kinetic energy of rotation smooth's out the pulsing
moments introduced by the attraction and repulsion of the coils and magnets
and to ensure continuous rotation of the dual flywheel rotor.

In relation with the research topic, according to Woodford, C. (2018),

the writer of an article entitled electricity generators stated that "An electric
motor/dc motor is essentially just a tight coil of copper wire wrapped around
an iron core that's free to rotate at high speed inside a powerful, permanent
magnet. When you feed electricity into the copper coil, it becomes a
temporary, electrically powered magnet. When you feed electricity into the
copper coil, it becomes a temporary, electrically powered magnet-in other
words, an Electromagnet and generates a magnetic field that the permanent
magnet creates and forces the coil to rotate. By a bit of clever design, the coil
can be made to rotate continuously in the same direction, spinning round and
round and powering anything from an electric toothbrush to an electric train.
So how is a generator different? Suppose you have an electric toothbrush
with a rechargeable battery inside. Instead of letting the battery power the
motor that pushes the brush, what if you did the opposite? What if you turned
the brush back and forth repeatedly? What you'd be doing would be manually
turning the electric motor's axle around. That would make the copper coil
inside the motor turn around repeatedly inside its permanent magnet. If you
move an electric wire inside a magnetic field, you make electricity flow
through the wire-in effect, you generate electricity. So, keep turning the
toothbrush long enough and, in theory, you would generate enough electricity
to recharge its battery. That, in effect, is how a generator works.” Additionally,
Samir, H. (2017) In the article DC motor as a generator, The DC motor is a
ready-made generator that will generate electricity. All that is needed is to
power up the flywheel, the source of mechanical energy to aid the DC motor
generator electricity.

8
Moreover, according to Electrical Easy, a motor is an electrical
machine which converts electrical energy into mechanical energy. The
principle of working of a DC motor is that “whenever a current carrying
conductor is placed in a magnetic field, it experiences a mechanical force”. Dc
motors has an advantages and disadvantages, which the researchers have to
consider in order for them to be able to prove its research. In relation to our
study, it has been pointed out and specified that having dc motor as an
alternative way of producing and storing energy aside from the other
alternatives can indeed be a source of power that generates electricity in
times of power failures especially at the most needed time. Despite its
disadvantages mentioned, advantages have outweighed it.

According to Yonhoo, A.., (2016) the present invention he had was

similar our research, using electric coils and magnets we were able to induce
electrical energy by magnetic induction. In addition, according to Dandekar,
P.., (2017) for small applications say less that 10-20 watts DC motors having
permanent magnets are far cheaper than AC motor of the same size and
that’s one of the reasons why we see them in such large number around us.
According to Lindeman, T.., (2017) around the world there are 1.3 billion if
people who lack of access to electricity, more than 5% of them are in Latin
America, 57% around Africa, 8% can be found in middle east, and lastly 17%
all around Asia. Providing electric power to those unserved populations will
cause a significant jump in demand in these coming decades.

According to Francisco, C.., (1998) this study estimates that the

demand of electricity on the Philippines its focusing on the Manila Electric
Company Franchise area, so our study is really trying to find an alternative
way to produce electrical energy using DC motors and recyclable materials
that can help those people who are prone in blackout, but not just here in the
Philippines but around the world. In addition to Bakis, R.., (2007) comparing
the four renewable energy sources it shows 70% of the generated by the four
to come from geothermal with only 42% of the total installed capacity, wind
energy contributes 27% of the electricity but has 52% of the installed capacity
for the solar energy produces, 2% of the electricity and 1% biomass
constitutes 93% of the total direct heat production from renewables,
9
geothermal 5% and solar heating is 2%. With all these kinds of energy still it
will not be enough to meet the continuously increasing need for energy in the
future.

The researchers are trying to find sustainable energy for the future
using recyclable materials. In addition Robert, S., et al. (2005) claims that an
electromechanical generator comprising an electromechanical device for
converting mechanical vibration energy into electrical energy. Therefore, our
DC motor generator does not emit harmful chemicals and we are using
mechanical device which is powered by battery that is connected to the DC
motor and is also connected to the flywheel plus the other DC motor, when
the motor is rotated repeatedly along with flywheel it produces
environmentally friendly energy.

Study by Brain M. (2009) reveals a motor uses magnets to create

motion. When two opposites attract and repels causes a force to create a
motion. This study explains on how an electric motor works. In addition,
according to Guo X. (2012) he states that the DC motor is a machine that
transforms electric energy into mechanical energy in form of rotation. Its
movement is produced by the physical behavior of electromagnetism. DC
motors have inductors inside, which produced the magnetic field used to
generate movement. Equally important, according to CheggStudy (2018) it
stated that the working principle of the motor is the interaction between the
magnetic field and the current to produce a force within the motor which helps
the motor to do work. DC motor is one type of motor that uses the DC current
to convert electrical energy into mechanical energy. When the electric current
passes through a coil in a magnetic field, a magnetic force will be generated,
this produces a torque in the DC motor. And what’s more is that according to
METmotors (2015) stated DC motors have the advantage of: higher starting
torque, quick starting and stopping, reversing, variable speeds with voltage
input and they are easier and cheaper to control than AC.

According to Dan Kammen (2016), in many parts of the developing

world, electricity generation is often non-existent, or at best unreliable. In
Nigeria, for example, a vast nation of 150 million people has a generating

10
capacity of 4,000 MW. By comparison, New York City alone has a generating
capacity of 13,000 MW. This shortfall is persistent and structural, and the
amount of capital required to fix it is tremendous. Therefore, the problem will
not be resolved anytime soon with the usual approach to centralized
generation and distribution. Currently, businesses and households that can
afford it resort to using diesel generators. Since diesel is sold at world prices,
the electricity generated is very expensive, as high as US$0.50 per kilowatt
hour or more. The lack of electricity is by far the largest impediment to
development in many parts of the developing world, and resolving the
problem will reduce poverty, enable progressive wealth creation and unleash
enormous potential of putting carbon-negative biomass power at work,
empowering people and transforming communities.

In addition, Christopher Marton (2018) conducted his research about a

portable-scale thermoelectric power generator is designed, fabricated, and
tested. The basis of the system is a mesoscale silicon reactor for the
combustion of butane over an alumina-supported platinum catalyst. The
system is integrated with commercial bismuth telluride thermoelectric modules
to produce 5.8 W of electrical power with a chemical-to-electrical conversion
efficiency of 2.5% (based on LHV). The energy and power densities of the
demonstrated system are 321 W h kg-1 and 17 W kg -1, respectively. The
pressure drop through the system is 130 Pa for the highest flow rate used,
resulting in a parasitic power requirement for air-pressurization of ~0.1 W. The
demonstration represents an order-of-magnitude improvement in portable-
scale electrical power from thermoelectric and hydrocarbon fuels and a
notable increase in the conversion efficiency compared with previous studies.

According to Keith Pullen (December 2016), his research study

flywheels have attributes of a high cycle life, long operational life, high round-
trip efficiency, high power density, and low environmental impact. This paper
presents a critical review of FESS regarding its main components and
applications, an approach not captured in earlier reviews. Additionally, earlier
reviews do not include the most recent literature in this fast-moving field. A
description of the flywheel structure and its main components is provided, and
different types of electric machines, power electronics converter topologies,
11
and bearing systems for use in flywheel storage systems are discussed. The
main applications of FESS are explained and commercially available flywheel
prototypes for each application are described. The paper concludes with
recommendations for future research.

According to Laithwaite, E. R. et al. (1969) talked about the utilization

of straight acceptance engine for the rapid transportation framework and
much consideration was focused on twofold sided direct enlistment engine
with leading sheet optional, which thought to offer the best favorable
circumstances for long tracks. Lastly, Nathloen Whitloeo (2010) expressed
that when you run a generator, and have it introduced it will as of now be
associated with your family electrical framework, so it can enact itself when
the power goes out. More often than not the generator has an exchange
switch that is associated with that will disengage the utility intensity of your
home when the generator is being utilized. The generator is then ready to
bond with your electrical framework to supply power to your home amid a
pass out. A portion of the littlest generators regularly found can control bike
lights. These have a tendency to be 0.5 ampere, lasting – magnet alternators
providing 3-6 W at 6V or 12V. Being controlled by the rider, proficiency is at a
premium, so these may fuse uncommon – earth magnets and are planned
and produced with awesome exactness. In any case, the greatest proficiency
is just around 80% for the best of these administrators – 60% is more regular
– due to a limited extent to the moving erosion at the tire – administrator
interface from poor arrangement, the little size of the generator, bearing
misfortunes and shabby plan.

To conclude, the use of DC motor as an alternative way to produce

gives certain ideas not just for us as a researchers’, but it somehow enables
the youth an exact and authentic research that enable to fully understand the
topic that we have created.

Gathering of authentic and credible sources is a must in conducting

this study to be able to fully understand the product that we are making.
Furthermore, this study will not just give beneficial to us as a researcher but

12
also to all of us that at the end of the day, we can use our imaginative thinking
and adapted skills in different ways and reaches the goal that we have.

13
CHAPTER III

METHODOLOGY

This chapter presents research methodologies employed in developing

our product. It provides discussions such as descriptions of research design
section, research locale and mentioned how data has been gathered by the
researchers that being used in the study.

Research Locale

This research was conducted in a Private Sectarian School; Cagayan de Oro

City since the chosen people who can benefit came from the said campus.

Research Instrument

The researchers will conduct an observation during the making of the

device and a multiple-trials after the assembling. The data gathered such as
errors being committed, consistency of the device, and the defections of the
device will be observed and recorded accordingly. The observation and
record will serve as an evidence for the outcome in our subject. The result will
be based on the researcher’s observation. In preparation of the instrument,
gathering good data collection that is needed was going to be used. In this
way, correct usage of instrument will attain the effectiveness of the DC
Generator. In the end, the researchers will use mobile phone to document and
write down useful results, the flaws and additional components needed for the
product. In addition, the conclusions that will be used will be verified by the
researchers if the product meets the standards of the researchers and the
expected functions.

Data Gathering:

In assembling the device the researchers would gather all the

necessary materials– a used DC motor, used power bank, wires, soldering
iron, electric drill, log, phone, a pc of flat sheet, base board, a pint of enamel
paint black, wooden screws, shaft, 2 bearings 30mm x 10mm bore diameter,
rubber bands.
A plywood would be cut to used as base. An improvised pulley using a
log to make a single pulley with 60mm x 6mm bore, 30mm x 6mm bore, and a
double pulley 60mm x 30mm diameter 10mm bore (3/16 groove). The double
pulley would be used to assemble a flywheel along with a shaft. The two
single pulleys would be attached to two motors (one attached with battery and
one will produce electricity).

Upon making the experiment, the researchers would draw a draft on

the 12x13 plywood to guide the placement of the materials. Using an electrical
drill to make a hole in it. The flat sheet of metal would be then cut into 4 pcs to
be shaped and screwed as a support for the flywheel and the motors. The
rubber band would be then attached to all the pulleys.

The device would be then up for testing. The researchers would test
the DC motor if there is a current running through the positive and negative
terminals using a soldering iron, solder, and a wire. The researchers would
solder positive wire (red) to the positive terminal and negative wire (black) to
the negative terminal. The researchers would find an alternative method on
installing a LED indicator.

After placing all the materials, the researchers would now test the DC
Generator. Again, the researchers would use the tester on the DC Generator
if how much current are running to the DC Generator.

After testing the DC Generator, the researchers would try to test the DC
Generator to the devices. First, test the phone to check if it is charging.
Second test light bulb and chargeable flashlights to check if it lights up. The
test would determine the effectiveness of the DC Generator of the devices.

The researchers would study on how to operate the device and the use
of method in designing the device if successful. The researchers would
conduct trial and accidental success on the generator.

CHAPTER IV

PRESENTATION, ANALYSIS, AND INTERPRETATION OF DATA

This chapter provides the analysis and interpretation of data collected

from testing the effectiveness of the DC Generator in producing voltage. The

results are presented according to the outlined problems stated in Chapter 1.

Problem number 1.

1. Can the product yield enough volts to power LED?

Table 1. Number of volts being produce by DC generator and its Mean

Table 1 shows two different batteries to power the DC Generator. Each

trial is estimated by time and measured by volts. It was shown on the table

that on the 1st trial using 12 volts battery, at 5 minutes it can produce 3.4

volts, at 10 minutes it produces 3.2 volts, at 15 minutes it produces 3.2 volts,

and the total mean of 3.26. Furthermore, on the second trial using 9 volts
battery, at 5 minutes it can produce 2.4 volts, 1.5 volts at 10 minutes, and 1.5

volts at 15 minutes with a total mean of 1.8 volts.

This finding is in line based on testing result using Multiple Trials

Method showing that the generator can produce volts that varies in duration

using both 12 volts and 9 volts batteries. Moreover, the result shows that the

12 volts battery being used to power the generator can likely produce much

higher volts compared to the 9v battery with a mean of 3.26 volts.

The result is in line with what the researchers’ aims to find. The efficacy

of the DC generator was proved by using the LED. The LED needs to receive

2.5 volts in order to light up. The DC generator powered by 12 volts battery

producing 3.26 volts as the mean for the trials. Therefore, the generator itself

is working since it can suffice the voltage needed to light the LED.

18
CHAPTER V

SUMMARY, CONLCUSION, AND RECOMMENDATIONS

This chapter explores at the summary of findings, conclusions,

recommendations and suggestions for further research.

Summary

The problem: The productiveness of the DC Generator to yield

voltage was aimed to know the following: 1. can the product yield enough

volts to power? The results were being classified as effective for various

reasons pertaining to the number of volts the product can generate.

Findings

The following results were revealed after analysing the data gathered

from testing the product.

1. The DC generator produced enough volts to light up LED.

2. The 12V battery powered up the DC motor and the receiver motor

produced 3.4V as a mean voltage within 15 minutes.

3. The 9V battery powered up the DC motor but it produced less volts

than the first battery which it produced 1.8V as a mean within 15

minutes.

Conclusion

The results of this study were done in private Sectarian premises and

the testing was accurately measured and showed a good amount of voltages

that indicates the effectiveness of the DC Generator, since the it can light up
the 2.5 volts LED. Therefore, this study is considered a success. After series

of investigations, trial and errors, data gathering and analysis the use of DC

motor as an alternative way to generate energy were found effective. The

effectiveness of the product itself was being tested and resulted to as 2.5 volts

that can be generated. In this study, the product that can be used for

emergency purposes was valid in according to the result stated above.

Moreover, the effectiveness of the product was proven by the data gathered.

From the findings it was found out that:

1. The DC generator produces enough volts for it can light up a LED. The use

of 12 volts battery to power the Generator to produce 3.26 volts as its mean

within 15 minutes of duration. The LED has 2.5 volts that is needed to for it to

light up, hence, having 3.26 volts yielded by the product it will surely light the

LED.

2. The use of 12 volts battery to power the DC generator it reveals that it can

produce a mean of 3.26 volts within 15 minutes duration. This result is chosen

to be used to represent the effectiveness of the product.

3. The use of 9 volts battery to power the DC generator it shows that it can

produce a mean of 1.8 volts within 15 minutes duration.

Recommendation

In the light of the findings and conclusions in the study, the researcher

presents the following recommendations.

1. For the community that:

20
• They will use the DC Generator to light up their houses with

the LED added in the product.
