An indirect quotation is when the meaning but not the exact words of something someone spoke is

referred to.

Quotation marks are not used with indirect quotations.

Ex:

Mike said that he was hungry.

She asked me if I were coming.

A direct quotation is a report of the exact words of an author or speaker and is placed inside quotation
marks in a written work.

When a person or work is quoted directly and word for word, the quotation is placed in quotation marks.

Ex:

Macbeth said, "All our yesterdays have lighted fools the way to dusty death."

2.A passage should be quoted if the source explains an idea in the best way possible or in a way that
cannot be reworded. Additionally, quoting should be used when the original passage is particularly
moving or striking.
