Lesson: Transactional Letters
Type of the lesson: Mixed lesson; Communicative
Materials: Goin for gold, Upper-intermediate, Student’s book,
Skills involved: reading, speaking, listening, writing

AIMS:
- to revise vocabulary related to music
- to practice reading for specific information;
- to practice speaking skills – expressing opinions;

OPERATIONAL OBJECTIVES:
At the end of the activity all students will:
- identify types of informal letters
- write different letters using linking words
- predict different written styles

FUNCTIONS:
- analysing letters ;
- bringing arguments;
- supporting arguments with examples;

PREVIOUS KNOWLEDGE:
- vocabulary related to informal style

TIME: 50 minutes.
Activity 1 (3 minutes) –Warm up
The teacher greets the students and asks for the absents of the day

Activity 2 (15 minutes)


The teacher asks the students to scan the text and try to predict what is about.
Their possible answers are that the text presents some letters or invitations
The teacher write on the board the title of the lesson “Transactional Letters”
The teacher asks the students to remind the types of texts they studied and what are the
particularities of each style
She may also ask them what is the difference between a letter to a friend and a letter to
somebody unknown.
She gives further information:
Transactional letters can be formal or informal
When we write a informal letter we should take into account few particularities:
- use a friendly tone, friendly words , is written to someone you know
- you usually tell that friend something interesting, share an experience, etc
-you may use phrasal verbs or noun verbs
-active voice
-you may use abbreviations and contractions
For formal letters we usually use :
Polite tone and words
We use noun phrase
We use passive voice
We do not use abbreviations and contractions

There are specific beginning for each paragraph and for each type of letter

Activity 3 (10 min)
The students must read the letter given by the ex 2/pg 23 and fill the text with the suitable
words or phrases given by the exercise
They must recognise what sort of letter and style represents
Choose the words which best describe the style
She also give them other type of letters to support theoretical information

Activity 4 (10 min)


The teacher asks the students to write a commercial of a famous singer that will perform into
their country.

Activity 5 – 10 min
The teacher ask the students to read their productions and gives them marks.

Homework -2 min
The teacher gives the students their homework
They should write an email to a friend to invite him to their birthday party
