I live in the center of Colorado, the Valley Highway(I-25) because I want to, mild weather, good jobs,
Known as eastern Sloppers, Pueblo, Colorado Springs, Denver, Loveland, Ft Collins, close to everything
except good hunting. For that I must drive 4-6 hours to get to the western slope, where there are lots of
animals and no people. The front range is the population center of Colorado. You don’t find good
hunting where you find a high population, lets face it. But then again there is one exception. With a
success level of 100% and within a couple of hours from Denver, yes, we are talking around Greeley
Colorado. East of where the mountains meet the plains. And yes, antelope make sense, but elk?

Two large no fence ranches can hide a lot from the public, and he is a herd of about 300 plus elk and at
least that many antelope, both closely managed, for quality and numbers. The ranch has good hayfields
which since antelope and elk, like cattle are grazers they feed and past the taste test very well like the
cattle they share the ranch with. There are Mule Deer and Whitetail Deer here as well, but they have
not met the numbers or quality level to be hunted at this time. The Ranches total about 35,000 acres so
you won’t run out of private land. In fact, you can do the best you can, and you still can’t cover it all. To
give you an idea on how much country you would need to cover, it comes out to about 55 one square
mile chunks of private land.

There is no drinking allowed until after the tags are filled. There is no smoking until you get back to
town. The fall is the driest time of the year and you will be in dry grass 99% of the time.

ANTELOPE

You will be hunting buck antelope in GMU087. In this area it takes 3 points to draw a license for
antelope. Vouchers come up and are available now and then but usually we just use Colorado License
Quick Pick Watchdog® to get us a license. The Vouchers, if available usually run between
$1000 and $1500, while Watchdog runs $95 to $120 if you go that way.
The hunts are guided but to keep the price down meals and lodging are the hunter’s
responsibility. Since there are ranch, “two track roads” throughout the ranch the basic way
to hunt the antelope is to drive, glass, spot, estimate size with a spotting scope then stalk up
within range for a shot, 200 yards, 300 yards, 400-yard shot.
Your guide has done this many time so he is fluent in finding the antelopes zipper and
cleaning it so that you can take it to a local processor, or one by where you live on the front
range. Antelope make a fantastic shoulder mount and are the most colorful big game animal
in North America. The brown neck and body, highlighted with white neck patches, and a
body they are brown on top and white on the bottom is easy to spot with binoculars. The
large white butt, with hair that that stands straight out to warn the other antelope is very
noticeable, but the big, jet black horns are what set of you horn mount from any other
animal.
When shooting I recommend bring a bi-pod to shoot off of, because where the antelope are
the tress are as scares as hens teeth. Any scoped rifle in .243 or larger will work well but
remember your targets chest is only 15”x15”. Pre-sight in your rifle for dead on at 200 yards
and you should be ok. If you have a range finder bring it. If you don’t have a range finder get
one because their flat habitat makes them look like a lot larger target, then they are.
If you are a good shot this can be a day hunt. If you are not it can last if 3 days. The buck’s
antler length run between 11” and 14” depending on when you pull the trigger.
Our antelope hunts are booked by the day in GMU 89 and for 3 days in GMU087. You provide your own
lodging breakfast and dinner. We provide lunch, drinks (non-alcoholic), snacks, guide, transportation,
game care, delivery of game to processor and/or taxidermist. GMU089 requires 2 preference points for
a buck and 0 preference points for a doe. GMU087 requires 4 preference points for a buck and 0
preference points for a doe.

For assistance on getting a license and the vouchers are $1500, try Watchdog for about $100.

Bull and Cow Elk
This is where getting a license gets easy. There are not supposed to be elk this far east of
the foothills, but there are, so the parks and wildlife in their ultimate wisdom sells bull and
cow elk licenses over the counter, and unlimited. The landowners protect the elk on their
land like their first born.
This fantastic hunt offers lots of options with a season that runs from November 1st through January
31st. You provide your own lodging breakfast and dinner. We provide lunch, drinks (non-alcoholic),
snacks, guide, transportation, game care, delivery of game to processor and/or taxidermist. Both bull
and cow tags are over the counter. We carefully monitor the heard population and only hunt one bull
per year and four cows. Make no mistake, this is not a high fence hunt. These animals are 100% wild.
We regularly take 320 class bulls.

For those flying in to hunt, Denver International Airport (DIA). DIA is about an hour away from Ft.
Morgan where most of our hunters stay for GMU 89 hunts. Some hunters stay in Sterling, Colorado
which is about another 30 minutes up the highway. Both locations are near our leased ranches. For
GMU 87 hunts, Ft. Collins, Loveland, Greeley, and Cheyenne are the closest towns with many great
options. The Hunt Code for the Licenses are E-E-087-U5-R

Where can I stay and what do I need to bring? There are several hotels and camping locations in Fort
Morgan, Sterling, Fort Collins, Cheyenne, Loveland, and Greeley. We're always happy to assist you with
booking your lodging.

What rifle or cartridge should I bring? We recommend a minimum of a .243 for antelope and .270 for
elk. Many a 30-06 with a 165-grain bullet for both animals as this allows plenty of distance and power.

The 7mm Mag and 300 Magnums come out many times for the elk. Remember that Eastern Colorado
can be windy at times so you want a cartridge that will withstand the wind. Wing and temperature
make up our weather I have seen temperatures from 80 degrees to near zero in October. The monthly
average is 66 degrees for the high, 36 degrees for the low. The biggest variable is the wind. Most days
are pleasant with the occasional very windy day. For elk hunts you can expect temperatures from 0 to
60 degrees.

Colorado law requires every big game rifle hunter to wear 500 square inches of blaze orange above the
waist. It must be solid daylight fluorescent orange or solid florescent pink material on an outer garment
while hunting deer, elk, pronghorn, bear, or moose during a muzzleloading or rifle season. Part of the
fluorescent orange must be a hat or head covering visible from all directions. Camouflage orange or
camouflage pink does not meet this requirement.

Booking

Antelope and cow elk hunts require a 50 percent, non-refundable deposit at the time of booking with
the remaining amount due 45 days prior to arriving for your hunt. Bull elk hunts require a 25 percent
deposit at time of booking.

Harvesting an animal
Every attempt will be made to get you onto the animal of your choice. We have a nearly 100 percent
shooting opportunity. If you wound an animal, every effort will be made to recover it, however, once
you shoot an animal your tag will be considered filled.
