Today`s numbers is called Hindu-Arabic number that have 10 symbols and digits that is
1, 2, 3,4,5,6,7,8,9 and 0. The earliest mathematical symbols is referred as Hieroglyphics
that originates from Egypt. Hieroglyphics were the formal writing system in which each
character represents a concrete object. Hieroglyphics was recorded on stones or metal.
Since it is difficult to produce, they invented the papyrus to be able record the
documentation efficiently.
A second system numerals came into use in Greece called cipher numerical systems. The
properties of Ciphers involved additive system, decimal system and the symbols were
arranged in a special order. This system is very easy to remember.
The Babylonians civilisation founded as a small port town on the Euphrates River near
the Egypt. The Babylonian numerals were written in cuneiform. Cuneiforms is a picture
that is similar to hieroglyphics. Cuneiform is written on a soft clay tablet which exposed
to the sun to harden to make a permanent record.
