Capstone Project Proposal Draft

Name of student: Marie Anthonette Salazar Date: October 28 2019

Teacher: Ms. Lacroix Block: 1-1

The Capstone strand I have chosen is Event Capstone (Entertainment Event)

Proposed title for my Project Proposal: (write the proposed title for your Capstone Project in one
clear sentence):
I plan to organize an uncompetitive talent show event to children with developmental needs,
which will serve as a platform for them to express their selves and their talents. Also, it is to
give them the same opportunities children, without these needs get; for them to feel that their
unique characteristics do not differentiate them from those with different characteristics.

Choose one of your stored inquiry questions from grade 9 or create a new inquiry question that
interests you for further research. It should be a question that connects with a purpose, passion
or personalized area of interest for you.
My inquiry question is:

What are some ways can we, as individuals, support each and every members of the
community?

Rationale/context: Detail your reasons for choosing this inquiry question. Explain WHY you are
choosing to investigate this topic as a major area of focus. How does this area of inquiry connect
to your passion(s), purpose? Why is it of personal interest to you?

I grew up as a confident individual. However, as I grew older, I lost my confidence and self-
esteem, making it difficult for me to just be myself as well as in my pursuit of passion and
happiness. As someone with this experience, I therefore want to help children to be confident
and to not be embarrassed of their unique characteristics, thus when they grow older, they
won’t be experiencing the struggles that I am currently facing. As the saying goes, “prevention
is better than cure.” With this talent show, I am hoping that these children will understand their
uniqueness and to also not depend their emotions (happiness) and confidence to others, and
that it should only be their voice that they are giving an ear to and the society.

Background: What background knowledge/connections/prior learning do you have in this

area of inquiry?

My personal experience of being an unconfident and timid individual (someone who is afraid
of people) as well as my volunteer experience at Big Brothers and Big Sisters as a Go Girls!
mentor.
Career connections: What is your intended career area at this point in time? What
connections does this inquiry question have to your life, academic and/ or career goals?

I want to be a pediatric physician. Although I still don’t know what I would specialize to (or if
ever I am going to), I am hoping that the direct experience I will have with the children with
developmental needs, will help me understand if my character is suitable for these children.
Also, I am hoping that this experience will broaden my knowledge in the personality (and
character) of children, which will be applied when making connections with patients.

Interdisciplinary and core competencies connections: What subject areas and core
competencies will be connected with your project? Outline and explain the connections.

Personal Awareness and Connections; Social diversity; and Personal and Culture Identity
- Because the project focuses on personal characteristics and uniqueness,
therefore my project demonstrates these core competencies.

Communication
- My project will involve constant communication with my mentor and the
organizations, especially since my project is an event that involves vulnerable
and sensitive children. Also, because the event is meant to be a platform to
develop self-confidence as well as awareness to those children with
developmental needs, communication is very important, because the
communication of these advocacies must be communicated in an effective way.

Creative thinking
- Organizing an event needs a lot of creative thinking in order for the talent show
event to be successful.

Capstone Presentation medium: select one or more project mediums you wish to use to
present your project. Outline and give details about how you will present your project once
completed. You may use a combination of mediums.
o Electronic portfolio: Prezi or PPT
o Physical portfolio
o Website
o imovie presentation

Either through videos or blog

Video
- Taking short videos of the event, especially their performance. If possible,
interviews may also be included in the video presentation.
Photographs with captions, uploaded in my blog
- Taking snapshots of the event and adding captions to describe what is
happening in that event

Description of my Capstone project. Specific Project Details of the Capstone Project: what
will you research, create, study, produce, solve, investigate? What product will be produced
at the end of this project for evaluation. Write a one-page description outlining your
proposal.

I plan to coordinate with an organization that supports and cares children with developmental
needs. However, I am still waiting for the organization to contact me back. I already inquired
two organizations; however, I will be only running the event with one organization because the
organizations that I contact are from Langley and Aldergrove. Once approved, the
organization and I, including my mentor, will plan for the specific details. I plan the details and
they will decide if my plans will work with their schedules and with their organization.

At the end, I am hoping to achieve a successful event. The event is similar to a talent show
but not necessarily because the event is open to any performance. The children are free to
express themselves in any way. I just called it a talent show for simplicity.

With regards to research, I am planning to investigate more ways that will make these children
comfortable and feel that they are not odd and that they are not different to those children who
do not have development needs. Also, I plan to research (and also ask for some advices from
my mentor) on how to connect and interact with the children effectively, without putting them
at risk or any harm.

Project Design Team: who needs to be on your project design team to make this
project/research effective? To support your work. Outline the team and their roles.

Organization that supports children with developmental needs

- They will host my event
Mentor
- My mentor is someone who has a great experience with these children and so
she will be able to give me some advices, as well as feedbacks.

Resources/ Technology/Skills: Make an assessment of the resources, technology and

skills you will need to be able to complete this project. What is your plan to be able to
access/learn all of the resources necessary to achieve completion of this project? Detail
your plans.

The skills that I will need to complete this project are communication, leadership, and
organization skills.
With regards to the resources and technologies, I plan to have an organization host my event.
And once they have approved my request, I am going to discuss to them about my plans.

Mentors/Community Connections: What types of mentor(s)/community connections will

you need to help you complete your capstone project? How will your mentor(s) help you?
What is your plan to access the mentorship/community connections necessary for this
project?

My mentor will be able to give me great advices that will allow me to connect to these children
effectively. Also, she will be able to give me feedbacks and will also be able to guide me in my
planning.
Project limitations: What are some project limitations and potential obstacles that you foresee
that might affect progress with your Capstone Project?

My main potential obstacle is the organization that will host me. My event focuses on children
with developmental needs and therefore I will need an organization that support these children
to host my event.
Another obstacle is my age. Because I am still a student who barely have skills, the possibility
of the organization as well as their parents in allowing me to work and connect with children
might be low because I am not professional and also since there is a possibility that I may
harm these children in the process of the event.

Other considerations: List and detail any other related information/ considerations about
your project that you feel should be included in your project proposal.

References: Provide a literature review or links for 5-10 references: research, videos, etc.
that offer some preliminary research you have done for your project that shows you are able
to access the key information that you will need to be able to complete this project/work.
