EXCAVATION WORK Page 2 of 7

1.0 SCOPE
This method statement is made to enumerate the procedure in the
excavation of concrete structure foundations, and other facilities where the
bottoms of foundations are above the underground water level
2.0 DEFINITIONS
Method Statement A written document that explains the procedure and
execution method at a various stage of excavation
work.

3.0 REFERENCES
The latest revision of the following Project Specification shall be used as
references and is part of this Method Statement in the execution of work.

4.0 GENERAL
1) The excavation of equipment and structure footings, grade beams, does
not need any special de-watering system.
2) An open cut type of excavation shall be applied with safe side slopes as
mentioned below.
3) Shoring and bracing system shall be used whenever required to protect
adjacent structure if any, in an excavation site or when the excavation
side slope is steeper than those mention below.
4) Suitable and appropriate excavator and compacting equipment shall be
used to carry out the works.
5) Safe angle and clearance of excavation:
Clearance of 1.0 meter from excavation top edge to barricade shall
always be kept.
Note: Soil material and equipment shall be kept away from the
excavation top edge.

8.0 WORK PROCEDURE

8.1 Survey
a) Verify the detail of excavation according to the latest construction drawing
before the start of the work. Conduct a survey and mark the location and the
limits of the area to be excavated. Allowance should be provided to have
enough working space between the foundation to be constructed and the edge
of the bottom of the excavation for the personnel and forms, bracing and
supports to be installed. In marking the excavation limits, consideration should
also be given for additional area to accommodate side slopes of the
excavation.
b) Determine the depth of the excavation from the existing ground taking
reference from a latest construction drawing.
c) Coordinate with other disciplines involved to verify any existing service/utility
lines such as water line, power line and telephone line running through
boundaries of excavation.
d) All excavations shall be “flagged” off at all times.

8.2 Excavation Operation

METHOD STATEMENT FOR EXCAVATION WORK

a) Set up barricade and signboards around the area to prevent unwanted

personnel from the excavation site.
b) Report immediately to the company any unknown underground installation
encountered during excavation. Stop work and wait for further instructions.
c) Excavate trial pits where required and as instructed by company when
existing utility lines or facilities are encountered, to establish the exact
location. The excavation shall be done manually and carefully in order not to
damage the utility lines or facilities.
8.3 Start the excavation carefully
a) Use mechanical excavator whenever possible and if the site condition
permits.
b) When heavy equipment such as excavator and dump trucks are in use, a
trained person shall be assigned to direct the traffic at the place of work and
closely monitor the status of excavation work.
c) Barricade shall be placed around the machine operation area.
d) Where the excavation site is close to the existing structures, sufficient shoring
and bracing system shall be planned and approved by client and then built
against the excavation wall to prevent any possible collapse of the excavation
slope and also damage to the structures. Where the excavation extends below
the foundation of existing adjacent structures, well planned and approved
measures to protect that structure must be provided.
e) Excavate up to the desired level, width and length as required to conform to
the latest construction drawing. The vertical tolerance shall be as per
specification.
f) Since the area does not permit the stockpiling of excavated materials,
transport and store the excavated materials to a designated stockpile area.
These excavated materials shall be used again as selected fill upon approval
of Client.
g) When the desired bottom elevation is reached, level and compact the ground
by using an appropriate machine such as 1 ton roller or plate compactors up
to the required density to conform with the Project Specification requirement.

h) Remove and replace with compacted structural fill any sort of contaminated
soil, if any found at excavation bottom.
i) Over excavation shall be backfill with aggregate mix 1:1:1
j) Provide a monitoring crew during excavation equipped with a dumpy level to
avoid unnecessary over excavation.

9.0 INSPECTION
The QC Inspectors and client Representative shall carry out the necessary tests
and inspections in various stages of the work including the excavation and
compaction work. client QC will witness the test or inspection. Inspection shall
be based on prepared ITP and Project Specifications listed in under Technical
Specification of this Method Statement, or as stated on the latest construction
drawing. Daily excavation inspections must be carried out and recorded.

10.0 SAFETY ACTION PLAN

Safety Supervisor shall carry out the safety site inspections to ensure that
safety requirements laid out in the safe work plan are followed during and after
the excavation work. Supervisor shall review Safety Action Plan and secure
Work Permit if necessary prior to start of any activities.
10.1 Barricading of excavation and “swing” areas of equipment shall be checked
Prior to work starting.
10.2 Equipment, tools and materials inspection.
All equipment for excavation works shall have to be inspected by Safety
Manager / Supervisor prior to forwarding to client Safety Department
inspection prior to use at site to ensure their safe worthiness at work. The
compactors, likewise shall have to be checked by Safety Manager / Supervisor
prior to their use on site and during the execution of work. The inspection
Reports shall be kept for record.
