The Modern Language Association developed the MLA format. The Idea was to create a
form of writing that would be uniform and consistent. Using the MLA format makes reading
work from students, teachers and researchers easy to read. MLA has been adopted by many other
The MLA format makes it easy to give credit to those you get your research from. Not
only does MLA require in text citations, but also a work cited page. The work cited should also
be uniform and consistent. This makes it easy for people reading the work to reference the
Grade level: 3
Materials: white board, problem worksheet, manipulatives and work sheet with sets/number
bonds, pencil/crayons.
State standards: Operations and Algebraic Thinking 1.OA Represent and solve problems
involving addition and subtraction. 1. Use addition and subtraction within 20 to solve word
problems involving situations of adding to, taking from, putting together, taking apart, and
comparing, with unknowns in all positions, e.g., by using objects, drawings, and equations with a
Lesson objectives: Students will be able to add and subtract. They will be able to use addition or
subtraction to find the unknown. I will make sure they develop an understanding for number
uses different methods for doing math. The worksheet will be story problems. For example, your
mother bakes 12 cookies, you eat 3 while she is not looking. How many cookies does your mom
have left? I will work the problems on the board by drawing sets. This will appeal to learners that
prefer to see things being done. I will also hand out manipulatives with sets already drawn on a
sheet. This will appeal to learners that are more hands on. The students will follow along and I
will include discussions about number groups. For students that struggle with reading I will
create a power point where they can just click on the question and hear audio of each question

while we do them. I think this would also be helpful for students with poor vision who cannot
Engagement: To capture the students interest I will be excited myself about the lesson. I am
pretty animated and will show excitement about math. Too many people have the attitude that
math is no fun. I definitely want to portray the opposite. Also to keep them interested I will come
up with problems that will appeal to them. Instead of just having 8-2=6 I will have a story
problem like, if you have 8 hot wheels and your little brother steals 2 how many do you have
left? This will spark emotion and give the problem itself more character making it more
Explanation: I will be sure that when students answer a question that they will be able to
explain why they know it is right. This is my purpose for emphasizing the number groups. I want
them to know that 5+8=13 but I also think it is important to check your work by doing 13-5=5.
This will start giving them a good understanding of the associative property.
Evaluation: For the lesson I will work several problems on the board. Once I feel the majority of
people are getting it I will then have students pair up and work problems among themselves. At
this point I will walk around and observe the students and help anyone who is struggling. Finally,
to be sure everyone is getting it I will have everyone finish the remainder of the problems on
their own. This will give me an understanding of who is getting it and who is not.
Time management: I plan to spend 15 to 20 minutes discussing and working the problems
together as a class. I will then give the kids 15 minutes to work problems on their own to gain an
