1. Answer the following questions : (10 x 1 = 10)

(b) Define duty cycle of a chopper.

(d) What are the advantages and disadvantages of a scalar control?

(e) Draw the speed torque characteristics of a synchronous motor.

2. (a) Expiain the working of a single phase full converter fed'dc drive with

(b) Discuss the factors to be considered. for selection of drives. (5)

3. (a) Explain the working of a single phase semi converter fed drive with wave
forms and basic equations. (10)
(b) The speed of a 10 HP, 230 V, 1200 rpm separately excited dc motor is
controlled by a single phase full converter. The rated motor armature
current is 38A and the armature resistance is, 0.3 f) . The ac supply
voltage is 260V. The motor voltage constant is ka O 0.1g2 V/rpm

4. (a) Explain the operation of a four quadrant chopper fed separately excited
dc motor drive. (10)
(b) The speed of a separately excited dc motor is controlled by a chopper. The
dc supply voltage is 120V, armature circuit resistance is 0.b (), irmature

motor drives a constant torque and load requiring an average armature
current of 20A. Assume that motor current is continuous. Determine

5. (a) Discuss open loop Volts I Heftz control of induction motor drives. (8)
(b) A three phase, 4 po1e, 18 kW, 300V, r - connected induction motor is
driven at 50 Hzby a six step VSI supplied from a dc supply of 200V. The
motor equivalent pararheters for 50 Hz operation are

the rms current and the harmonic copper losses when this operates at
1450 rPffi, 50 Hz. Determine the motor .efficiency compound. with
sinusoidal operation.

6. (a) Explain the rotor resistance control schemes for induction motors. (10)
(b) Explain the different slip powers recovery schemes for induction motor
control. (5)

7. Explain the operation of a variable frequency through VSI fed synchronous
