serves to exemplify the
machismo culture in this novel.
Bayardo comes into the town
as a stranger who is the model
of what machismo embodies.
He is very sure of himself
when he gets to town. Later, he
returns Angela to her family
when he finds out she wasn’t a
virgin when they got married.
His relationship with Angela
also serves to highlight the
ideals of marianismo and what
is expected of women in the
society.
Theme

Bystander’s responsibility is a
common theme throughout the
novel. The whole novel revolves
around the murder of Santiago
Nasar. Because the whole town
knew about the murder before it
happened, the degree of their
responsibility as bystanders
comes up. Marquez conveys the
idea that even though the people
of the town did not commit the
murder, they were still
responsible, at least to an extent.
Because the people did nothing
to stop the murder, they have
some responsibility for Santiago
Nasar’s death.
Plot

The book is not in chronological
order and is sometimes told from
the view of someone looking
back on events later and other
times as though the narrator is in
the moment. The author does this
to show how the events shaped
what happened later. The
narrator is someone who went
back and investigated the story
later. Because of this, the reader
sees the events with the
perspective of knowing what
happens later. Knowing that
Santiago Nasar will be murdered
shapes the reader’s view of the
characters and their actions
throughout the novel.
Global Issue

Women in society were valued
based on their relationship to men
and were expected to serve a
husband. This issue is shown
through the Vicario daughters and
their upbringing. Women were
expected to sacrifice personal
aspirations and goals to serve a
family and husband. They were
expected to be pure and docile,
and submissive to men. These
traits align with the marianismo
ideals the girls and women were
expected to strive towards. These
traits directly contrast with the
ideal machismo traits in men,
which were dominance, honour,
and strength.
