(1) Let Pn (z) = 1 + z + z2! + . . . + zn! . Show that for all R > 0, there is N ∈ N s.t. for all n ≥ N ,
all the zeros of Pn lie outside of B(0; R).

(2) Show that if P(z) = a0 + a1 z + . . . + an−1 z n−1 + z n , then there is a point z with |z| = 1 such
that |P(z)| ≥ 1.

(3) Let f be holomorphic in a neighbourhood of the closed unit disc D. If |f (z)| < 1 for |z| = 1, then
show that there is a fixed point for f in the open unit disc B(0; 1). What if |f (z)| ≤ 1 for |z| = 1?

(4) Find how many roots of the polynomial z 5 + 3z 2 + 1 and 2z 5 − 6z 2 + z + 1 will lie in the annulus
1 < |z| < 2 .

(5) Find the smallest positive integer r such that P(z) = z 5 + 48z + 64 has a root in the disc |z| < r.

(6) Find how many zeros of the function f (z) = zez − 1/4 lie in the annulus 1 < |z| < 2.

(7) Let f and g be analytic on a neighbourhood of the closed unit disc of radius R. Suppose f (z) 6= 0
for z on the circle of radius R. Show that ∃ ε > 0 such that f (z) and f (z) + εg(z) have the
same number of zeros inside the circle of radius R.

(8) Prove maximum modulus principle for harmonic functions [Hint: use the Open mapping theo-
rem].

(9) Find a fractional linear transformation that maps the circle |z − 1| = 1 onto the real axis.

(10) Give examples of biholomorphisms between the following sets :

(i) {z : |z| < 1} and {z : Re(z) < 0}.
(ii) {z : |z| < 1} to itself with f (0) = 0 and f (1/2) = i/2.
(iii) {z : 0 < arg(z) < 3π/2} and {z : 0 < arg(z) < π/2}.
(iv) {z : |z| < 1, Im(z) > 0} and {z : |z| < 1}.

(11) Let f : H −→ C be a holomorphic function satisfying |f (z)| ≤ 1 and f (i) = 0. Show that
|f (z)| ≤ | i−z

(i) Let r < 1. Show that there is a constant c < 1 such that |f (z)| < c|z| for |z| ≤ r.
(ii) Show that fn := f ◦f . . .◦f , where the composition is taken n-times, satisfies |fn (z)| ≤ cn |z|
