SCHOLASTIC TRIUMPHS AT ATENEO DE MANILA

(1872-1877)
This college was a bitter rival of Dominican-owned college of San Juan de
Leteran.
Formerly- Escuela Pia(CHARITY SCHOOL) a school for poor boys in manila
which established by the city government in 1817. When Jesuits, who had been
expelled from the Philippines in 1768, returned to manila in 1859, they were given
the management of the ESCUELA PIA, whose name was changed to ATENEO
MUNICIPAL, and later became the ATENEO DE MANILA.
Rizal enters the Ateneo- JUNE 10, 1872
HE TOOK THE ENTRANCE EXAMINATION ON:
 Christian doctrine
 Arithmetic
 Reading
at the college of SAN JUAN DE LETERRAN.
College registrar – FR. MAGIN FERRANDO
REFUSED TO ADMIT HIM FOR TWO REASONS:
 He was late for registration.
 He was sickly and undersized by his age.
Father Burgos nephew- MANNUEL XEREZ BURGOS
JESUIT SYSTEM OF EDCATION – it trained the character of the student by rigid
discipline and religious instructions.

Aside from academic courses leading to the degree of BACHELOR OF ART. It
offered vocational courses in:
 Agriculture
 Commerce
 Mechanics
 Surveying

The students divided into two groups.


 ROMAN EMPIRE –consisting of the ENTERNOS (boarders)
 CARTHAGINIAN EMPIRE- consisting of the EXTERNOS(non-
boarders)

 3rd- Decurion
 4th- centurion
 5th-standard-bearer
Ateneo students in Rizal’s time wore a UNIFORM which consisted:
 Hemp fabric trousers
 Striped cotton coat
Coat materials was called- RAYADILLO
 RIZAL 1st year in Ateneo- 1872-73
 2nd year in Ateneo- 1873-74
 3rd year in Ateneo- 1874-75
 4th year in Ateneo-1875-76
 Last year in Ateneo- 1876-77
He obtained the HIGHEST GRADE in all subjects:
 Philosophy
 Physics
 Biology
 Chemistry
 Language
 Mineralogy
Rizal graduated at the head of his class with the Highest Honor.
