PROJECT DETAILED BRIEFING SHEET

Part 1 tests your ability to model a part, design a suitable stock and create tool
paths for the milling of the part. In addition, you must create the fixture/clamps and
show the holding positions for the front face only.

Part 2 has similar requirements except the component is to be produced on a lathe.

No fixture required.

Sketches of one milling and one turning part are supplied.

Part 1: Howes Hub

• Assume the material is aluminium alloy. As a one off job rather than mass production the stock is
produced by band sawing from bar stock.

• For this part of the project you are required to design a holding/clamping fixture/clamps.

• Create a 3D a model of Part 1 Howes Hub and show fully constrained sketches.

• For the Part 1 create suitable stock and build a manufacturing assembly consisting of the part and
stock. Show two views with a transparent stock.

• Show the holding /clamping fixture and clamps for the front face.

• Using suitable operations, generate toolpaths to machine the part but take note of excluded
areas. (This may require more than one assembly)

• Display carefully chosen screen shots of each toolpath on a white background. (Attempt to
display four shots per page but keep in mind that your machining strategy will be assessed
on the graphics.)

• The first sheet of graphics for the Part 1 must show the history tree with only the Process
section expanded to show the machining operations used and the sequence. Each graphic
display must be titled.

Part 2. Stepped Shaft

• Create a 3D model of Part 2 Stepped Shaft and show a fully constrained sketch. (Not the 3D Model)

• For the Stepped Shaft create suitable stock and then build a manufacturing assembly
consisting of the part, stock and fixture.

• Show one isometric view with a transparent stock.

(Hint: consider whether a revolving centre might be required)

• Using suitable operations generate toolpaths to completely machine the part demonstrating
the manufacturing plan. (This may require more than one assembly)

• Display carefully chosen screen shots of each toolpath on a white background. (Attempt to
display four shots per page but keep in mind that your machining strategy will be assessed
on the graphics.)

• The first sheet of graphics for Part 2 Stepped Shaft must show the history tree with only the Process
section expanded to show the machining operations used and the sequence. Each graphic display
must be titled.

Submission Requirements:
1. The project is to be submitted as a Report of a maximum twelve (12) A4 sheets plus the project
cover sheet and an index. Font Arial 11pt. (Not as Drafts or Catia Files)

2. Each page must be numbered and should have a header of your employee number and full name.

3. Display carefully chosen screen shots of each toolpath on a white background. (Attempt to display
four shots per page but keep in mind that your machining strategy will be assessed on the graphics)

4. All files including CATPRODUCT, PROCESS and a saved video file for each simulation must be
Saved on the Company’s USB Flash Drive given to each employee for future references if required
by manager.
