Summer Internship and Research Project Guidelines for 2019- 2020 Batch

The objective of this internship project is to provide the students an opportunity to identify and work on
an internship problem in their area of interest within an organization. Students should use this as a
platform to understand the issues / problems faced by the business and provide feasible solutions to such
problems by evaluating the alternatives.

Important aspects of Summer Internship and Research Project

PART A – SYNOPSIS SUBMISSION

It is a Summarized Plan/ Blue Print for the research project. It provides the rationale for the research, the
research objectives, the proposed methods for data collection and recording formats and/or questionnaires
etc.

PART B – WORK PROFILE

The activities/ tasks carried out by the student in the company during the internship period

PART C – RESEARCH WORK

The area/ topic identified based on the current problem and gap in literature review in the organisation
seeking innovative solutions

PART A – SYNOPSIS

Contents of Synopsis

1. Working title: Working title is a short line that gives your research a direction and the title might
slightly change at the final stages of research. The title should give your research and
identity/name which reflects the focal point and area of the research. It should therefore be clear
and to the point

2. Purpose of the research (or Rationale for the study): This should be a one-page discussion which
sets out (with supporting data fully referenced) the problem and the reason for the proposed
study, highlighting the issues to be investigated

3. Objectives: Ideally between three and five single sentence objective should be developed.
Objectives are the breakdown of your aim (sub-aims) which focuses on finding out or
establishing certain issues while achieving your aim. The objectives will pose a number of
questions which will form your research questionnaire later in the research process.
1
Page
4. Key Questions/Research Question: Key questions on Research Questions are refined statements
of the specific components of the problem. Although the components of the problem define the
problem in specific terms, further details may be needed to develop an approach. Each component
of the problem may have to be broken down in sub components or research questions

5. Hypothesis (or key questions): If your research is designed to test/validate a hypothesis or

conceptual theory, then a one sentence hypothesis needs to be established which should clearly
and specifically state the position for that argument or investigation. A hypothesis is a tentative
proposition which is a subject of verification through investigation. Your conclusion will either
support or reject your proposed hypothesis or support part and reject others. Your hypothesis
should also be sharp and specific.

If your research is designed to develop a theoretical framework (as in the case of qualitative
research or problem-solving approach), then a number of ‘key questions need to be formulated
which should state the position for the argument on investigation.

6. Research Methodology: A research design is a framework or blueprint for conducting the

marketing research project. It details the procedures necessary for obtaining the information
needed to solve marketing research problem. A research design lays the foundation for
conducting the project. Following are the components of research design.
▪ Research Design
▪ Specify data collection & methodology
▪ Specify the measurement or scaling procedure.
▪ Specify sampling technique and sample size e.g.
o Sampling Unit - Consumer/Retailers/Corporate Executives
o Sampling Size - 200 Consumers/50 Retailers/50 Corporate
▪ Sampling Type - Convenience Sampling
▪ Construct Questionnaire
▪ Plan of Data Analysis

7. Proposed Contents: This stage involves writing up the contents of the dissertation and should
cover the chapter proposed.

8. Work Plan: This should be a simple work plan or time table — a bar chart of activities over the
weeks of study which is often helpful — indicating what you intend to do and when.

PART B: WORK PROFILE

o Explaining the activities/tasks carried out by the student in the company.

o Details regarding expectations set and achievement( targets) during the program
o Learning and takeaways from each of the tasks carried out

PART C: RESEARCH WORK

Internship Topic Selection

Choosing your topic for the internship is the first step. The internship mentor may suggest a topic and/or
area for research. Sometimes the company may also suggest a topic for research.

Supervision

During the internship period, the student will be under the supervision of a faculty mentor identified by
the institute. The internship will provide guidelines on how the student should execute the internship
report. The student will be required to report to the faculty mentor immediately on allocation. The
internship topic and plan of execution should be finalized before the end of the present term. The mode
and frequency of communication during the internship period should be decided in consultation with the
mentor. Be in regular contact with your mentor during the duration of the project. You should meet the
mentor frequently and apprise him/her of the progress made by you.

Each student shall maintain a ‘Project Diary’ in which he/she shall record the activities carried out on a
daily basis. The record shall be emailed to the faculty mentor on a weekly basis.

Internship Report

To fulfill the academic requirements, you are required to submit an internship report following the
specifications outlined in this guideline

Instructions for Preliminaries Section

• The Title page introduces the report by listing information like internship title; student’s name;
mentor’s name etc., (See the sample title page)
• The Company Certificate page should be signed by any authorized person of the company. (It
should mention the duration for which the internship was undertaken)
• The Declaration page is signed by the student and thereby confirming that the internship work is
an original study. (Ref: declaration page)
• The Internship Certificate page is signed by the faculty mentor. (Ref: certificate page)
• The acknowledgment page should not exceed more than one page. Here you have the opportunity
to thank various people who have been of help during your Internship.
• The Executive Summary is the most important part of your report. It summarizes the report in
around two pages by outlining its scope, purpose and major findings, highlighting the key
conclusions and recommendations.
• The Table of Contents lists all sections and sub-sections and uses the same numbering system as
in the report. (Ref: Content page)
• The list of tables and list of graphs page should provide the table/graph number, title and page
number (Ref: Sample page,)

Instructions for Main Text Section

• Chapter I – Introduction and Company Profile: The Introduction defines the subject of the
Internship. Here you can outline the topic and/or industry related to the internship area. You must
give a broad introduction to the topic under review and types of issues it raises.
The company profile should briefly introduce the company. All major operations / departments
should be covered.

• Chapter II – Report on Work Profile:

o Explaining the activities/tasks carried out by the student in the company.
o Details regarding expectations set and achievement( targets) during the program
o Learning and takeaways from each of the tasks carried out

o This chapter should contain the reviews of articles, research papers (approximately 15-
4

20) pertaining to the proposed research topic

Page

o The article selected for reviews must be latest and relevant

o Research gaps to be identified

• Chapter IV – Research Methodology: This chapter includes among others the internship
problem, need for study/significance of the research, objectives, hypotheses, methodology –
scope, sample design, sources of information, tools and techniques of analysis, structure of the
study with sound justifications/explanations.

Following order is to be adhered to -

• Statement of the problem

• Scope of the study
• Objectives of the study
• Hypothesis of the study(if any)
• Methodology
• Data collection
o Selection of sample
o Plan of analysis
o Limitations of the study

• Chapter V – Data Analysis: This is the main body of the research. The main body of the project
must take the reader logically through a variety of linked arguments, relating theory and practice,
concepts and concrete observations. You should ensure that you have covered all the major issues
pertinent to the internship by the end of the main body.

• Chapter VI – Findings: Your findings need to be drawn demonstrably from your own
observations and grounded in an authoritative set of ideas. They should not be anecdotal.

• Chapter VII – Conclusions & Recommendations: Conclusions and recommendations are often
confused but they are not the same thing. Conclusions are derived from internship outlined in the
main body and do not introduce new material. They may be presented in a sequence of two or
three sentence paragraphs. The conclusions should specifically answer the questions raised in the
introduction or conclude how the goals or objectives stated in the introduction have been met.

• Recommendations are proposed plans of action for the future. They are suggestions following
logically from the conclusions. Remember that conclusions deal with the present,
recommendations with the future. Your Recommendations should be feasible, practical and must
place your conclusions within a concrete and practical framework. You need to consider your
recommendations in the context of their possible human, financial, political, managerial, etc.,
implications. Your recommendations should be justified.

provides an alphabetized list of all of the sources that were used. By citing your sources at the end
5

of your report, you are letting your readers know where they can go to verify your internship or
Page
find more information; you are also acknowledging the internship and ideas of others and
protecting yourself from accusations of plagiarism. Follow the APA style for referencing.

• Appendix: An appendix is used for additional or supplementary materials, which has not found
place in the main text. The materials that can be included here are original interview schedules,
questionnaire, financial statements, print advertisement, distribution network, HR policies,
company report etc., and any other material of considerable reference value. The appendices are
