DIRECTIONS FOR COMPLETING VINELAND-II PROTOCOLS

START POINTS—PARENT AND TEACHER FORMS

• Start at the age-appropriate start point.

 Several of the subdomains say “3+” next to item 1. Many teachers skip these
particular scales, but they must be completed—just start on item 1 for subdomains
with the 3+ start point on item 1.

DETERMINING BASALS AND CEILINGS: TEACHER RATING FORM

• Start at the age-appropriate start point and answer each item until you have answered four
consecutive items with a 0 (four consecutive 0’s are the ceiling).

• Check to make sure you have obtained a basal. A basal is four consecutive 2s from the
start point. IF YOU HAVE NOT OBTAINED FOUR CONSECUTIVE 2s FROM THE
START POINT, YOU MUST RETURN TO ITEM 1 AND ANSWER ALL ITEMS
BETWEEN 1 AND THE START POINT.

DETERMINING BASALS AND CEILINGS: PARENT RATING FORM

• Start at the age-appropriate start point and answer each item until you have answered four
consecutive items with a “0” (four consecutive 0’s are the ceiling).

• Check to make sure a basal has been obtained. IF THE PARENT HAS NOT
OBTAINED FOUR CONSECITIVE 2s FROM THE START POINT, THEY MAY
ANSWER ITEMS IN REVERSE ORDER UNTIL FOUR CONSECUTIVE 2s HAVE
BEEN OBTAINED. *This is unlike the Teacher Rating Form—parents do not have to go
back to item 1.

OTHER IMPORTANT NOTES

• The Fine Motor and Gross Motor subdomains do NOT have to be completed for children
ages 7 years, 0months and older. These scales are only completed for children ages 6
years, 11 months and younger.
• It is not required for parents to complete the Problem Behaviors items at the end of the
Parent Form.

• Please note the distinction between the Parent Survey Interview Form and the Parent
Rating Form!

 Parent Rating Forms should be sent home for the parent to complete on their
own. This is the form that we will typically send out unless the interview form is
more appropriate. This form should not be completed by the teacher in an
interview format.

 The Parent Survey Interview Form should be completed by the teacher in an

interview format either in person or by phone (i.e., this form should not be sent
home). This form is more appropriate if you suspect the parent cannot complete
the form independently (e.g., parent cannot read). Please request an interview
form if you feel doing an interview is more appropriate.

• Be sure that all of the demographic information is completed including the teacher’s
name, date of evaluation, relationship to student, and language spoken in student’s home.

• Be sure to review the scoring guidelines (when to rate 2, 1, or 0). This information is
located in the front of the protocol.

• PLEASE DOUBLE CHECK THAT ALL BASALS AND CEILINGS HAVE BEEN
OBTAINED ON ALL 9 SUBDOMAINS BEFORE RETURNING THE PROTOCOLS
TO US!

 The 9 subdomains on the Teacher Rating Form are: Receptive, Expressive,

Written, Personal, Academic, School Community, Interpersonal Relations, Play
and Leisure Time, and Coping Skills. (Motor skills only completed if the child is
younger than 7years).

 The 9 subdomains on the Parent Rating Form are: Listening and Understanding,
Talking, Reading and Writing, Caring for Self, Caring for Home, Living in the
Community, Relating to Others, Playing and Using Leisure Time, and Adapting.
(Motor skills only completed if the child is younger than 7 years).
