Analysis of “The Hows Of Us”

The general analysis of the film: “The Hows of Us”, is a moving story about the ups and downs of
real-life relationships. Story of couple Primo (Daniel Padilla) and George (Kathryn Bernardo) who are in a
long-term relationship and are already building and planning their future together. Their love will be put
to the test as their relationship faces hurdles - from misunderstandings to different career paths, among
others. George (Kathryn Bernardo) and Primo (Daniel Padilla) are schoolmates who fall in love. She's
preparing to get into medical school and he's a musician waiting for his band to hit it big. Together, in a
house they inherited from George's grand aunt, they dream of great success and promise to support
each other no matter what.

In the first half of the film, their relationship was slowly becoming toxic because of Primo’s
irresponsibility, insensitivity and his selfishness which caused George to be a total martyr towards
Primo. The relationship became one-sided where the imbalanced contributions of the two parties
caused them to self-destruct and the separation began when Primo left George without looking back.

In the second half of the film documented about Primo’s efforts on winning George back as his
girlfriend again. It all started when George was planning on selling her grandmother’s house for her
young brother named Yohan (Darren Espanto) yet Primo refused not knowing why George was about to
sell the house. George needed the money to cure his brother’s eye problem which is his diabetic
retinopathy that might cause blindness. His father Gregory had long left their mother to raise her two
kids, so Yohan never saw him before. Impending blindness because of diabetic retinopathy heightened
his desire to search for his father. The angle of the film would bring the story to picturesque Amsterdam
in the Netherlands in the latter part of the movie. In the prologue, the film introduced Yohan in his
younger years which is his 9th birthday. Yohan asked his mom about his father yet his mother told him
that he died. Yohan could not believe the fact that his father died in Amsterdam at first, knowing that it
is true.

George’s friends advised her the pros and cons of going back to her ex and George made her final
decision to say no to Primo. The absurd condition that George started putting boundaries in the house
by putting an actual boundary line using white tape across the center of the house when George and
Primo come to terms to own the house by half.
