Brocade is a traditional handicraft originating in Nghe An province, Vietnam. The process of making brocade is complex, taking a week of hard work to complete using natural dyes from plants like bamboo leaves and turmeric. Brocade weaving has been passed down through generations as a cultural tradition, with designs symbolizing aspects of life. However, modern automatic production now threatens the income of brocade artisans and endangers this cultural heritage, so efforts are needed to preserve and promote brocade through competitions, exhibitions, and product innovation.

So, today, we are very honored to introduce you about the exclusive handicrafts in my village which is called brocade. In the first part, let us speak about its history and origin. No one know when this traditional form originated but maybe a long time ago when Thai people began to appear. This product is widely made in mountainous areas such as Con Cuông, Tương Dương, Kỳ Sơn … It was started by farmers especially the women. In our village, every girls has to know how to make a product before getting married. So it is a way to show love to their partners by the pieu. At that time, the brocades were made exclusively by hand with a loom, showing both the cleverness and patience of the artisans. They may seem simple enough, but the process of making them is surprisingly complex and laborious. There are multiple stages, starting from feeding silkworm to sourcing the ingredients, which is said to be the most difficult task. To complete the product, they need a week with hard work and skill. So what is special about this art form? All of the paints are produced from natural materials: black from burnt bamboo leaves, green from Cajuput leaves, yellow from turmeric,… They always transmit a deep message through the patterns designed In Thai brocade, birds and elephants symbolize the life and existence whereas dragons means power. This tradition is passed down from generation to generation. That makes the Thai become more popular and famous. Nowadays, this custom is less designed due to automatic products which pose a threat to people’s income and they might no longer produce brocade. However we can preserve and develop this by holding competitions and exhibitions, changing designs and improving the quality of products. That’s all about our presentation today. We hope that it gives you a deeper insight into brocade and Thai tradition.
