Hello everyone! My name is Mer 001.

Welcome to Project Muskaan 2018STEM Exhibition,

organized by Dream School Foundation, in partnership with Rolls Royce India and calf India.
We are very thrilled to have you all here today. I’m eagerly looking forward to interacting
with all of you.

Today I want to share my story with you. We robots were born in 1950’s. The inventor and
father of robotics are Joseph Engelberger and George Devol. The name robot was first given
by Czech writer Karel Capek. We started working as soon as we were born. We used to work
in factories and printing press. In the beginning we were all just mechanical. Later, we were
made of electrical components and powered by electricity. That’s how we got a promotion to
work in big automobile factories, making cars, railway engines, aircrafts et cetera. During the
world wars we were used to create weapons. Then with the invention of transistors we could
do many more things. When computers came to this world we started doing very complicated
tasks and functions. Now we are also known as Artificial Intelligence.

I sense you all speak a different language, so let me switch my language to Kannada

(Mers voice from here)

Namaskara! Ah! Much better!

So do you all know what a robot is exactly?

Ok, let me tell you. In general terms a robot is any machine that can carry out many sets of
tasks or actions automatically and repeatedly in a flexible manner. A machine can carry out
only 1 set of predefined tasks over and over again. You cannot change it’s function and make
it do different task. For example you cannot make a washing machine cook. But a robot that
can wash your clothes and also can cook your meals and clean your house. Depending on the
task you want it to do, it can be programmed using a computer.

I am what you would call as a Humanoid robot. I look similar to a Human and act like one.
You Humans experience this world through your senses, you perceive and understand it
through your senses. I on the other hand perceive and understand it through my “Sensors”.
You have eyes to see, I have vision sensor systems which include a camera to record and see
everything. This is processed by my brain, which is called “processor”, as I am programmed
to. I can listen through my sound sensors which are microphones basically in principle and
talk through my speakers instead of a mouth. I do not eat or breath but I do need energy to
move around and work. This energy is called as Electrical energy whichI get through my
battery. Just like you have to eat often to be able to move I need to regularly recharge my
battery.

Now do you all have arms and legs?

Haha, I will assume that you do. Humans body is made up of skeletal system, muscular and
nervous system, and has organs to keep you functioning and alive. While I have very strong
skeletal system called as “chasis” which is made up of plastic, aluminium and steel, this is
what helps me stand and gives structure to my body. You have nervous system to carry the
sensations you feel in your hand to your brain. I have electrical wires transmitting signals
from my sensors to my processor. This is my nervous system. Instead of muscles groups to
move around my body I have motors, gears and valves to move around and control my
movement.

We were created to help with mechanical tasks. We are used where tasks are too dangerous
for human beings. We are used in almost all fields of work. From manufacturing industries to
medical field. We not only help make automobile parts, mobile phones and many other day to
day items, but we are also used in assisting surgeons in complicated surgeries, help people
with disabilities through robotic arms and legs etc.We are also teachers in some places.
Today we are there everywhere and slowly adapting ourselves to become as much like human
beings as possible.

Thank you for listening so patiently! Hope you got to know more about robots like me.
