BACKGROUND
OF THE STUDY

WHELAN ET AL., 1990

MACDAW Roofing | Thesis Proposal

The innovative way of using plastic as a

roofing material has a wide selection of
material based on plastic. One of the most
common plastic materials is the vinyl
chloride also known as vinyl.
BACKGROUND
OF THE STUDY

AMER ET AL., 2018

Excellent coupling of fiber

reinforcement to the vinyl matrix is required
for good retention of tensile strength.
Addition of glass fibers results in a

significant decrease in coefficient of linear

thermal expansion.

Chicken Feather Fiber has good thermal and

acoustic properties that make it tough and
resilient to weathering. The fiber has a very
low density making it lightweight.

Plastic
Roofing

KULATUNGA, 2014

Roofing is one of the most essential parts of

a building. Over the course of time the

materials used have been changed from
low lifespan renewable material such as
weaved coconut leaf, Palmyra leaf,
paddy straw etc. to longer life materials,
Cement fiber sheets, galvanized iron sheets
and recently, even plastic material.

The addition of reinforcements in materials naturally
improves its mechanical properties. From the engineering
point of view the most important type of composites at the
present time are Fiber Reinforced Materials.

Colorants are natural or synthetic
additives which impart color, hiding
power, and specialized physical
attributes to a finished substance or
product. In addition to color, they may
add bulk, durability, and corrosion
resistance to an intended substrate.

Vinyl resins are almost always cured with

heat-activated peroxide catalysts, which

generate sufficient ‘free radicals’ to cause

the double bonds in the resin and monomers
to crosslink.

CONDITIONING AND TESTING OF
MATERIALS

The material will be conditioned through

immersion in distilled water for 24 ± ½ h at 23
± 1ºC conforming to ASTM D618 (Standard
