Simple science concepts to do at home

No explanations given

just do and enjoy

Curiosity is the mother of inventions and innovations these simple

and colourful and playful attempts would Pave a way of learning by

doing

1. Blowing below a paper

Take a thin board like an invitation

Bend it lightly do that it makes an arch

Place it on the table

Blow below the arch

Oh the arch buckles in

2. Blowing between two papers

Take two long strips of paper

Suspend them between your two hands with a small gap between

them

Now blow between the two strips

Oh they try to stick to each other


3.. Grapes in water osmosis

Take a glass of water

Add some dried grapes to it

Wait for a few hours

Oh the grapes have swollen heavily

4. Egg salt water

Take an empty water bottle

Cut the top of it and make it as a tall jar

Fill it with water to it's three fourth

Take an egg and drop it inside

The egg will lie at the bottom

Now slowly add some salt to it

Oh the egg slowly Comes afloat as you add more salt

5. Ball pen cover and shooting

Take a ball pen outer cover which is open at both the ends

Take a small piece of rubber band and attach it to one side of the

tube as shown

Now this will act as a shooter

Take a long blunt stick


Insert it into the tube and fix it to the center of the rubber band and

pull it

Leave the rubber band

Oh you have got an arrow shooter

6. Funnel and candle blowing out

Light a candle

Take a funnel

Blow through the stem of the funnel with the wide mouth towards the

candle and try to extinguish it

Oh however hard you try it's impossible to blow out the candle

7. Fan and pencil

Take two strips of thin chart boards of size two by half inch

Make a cross out of them and stick them at the centre with glue

Give a twist at the end of the strips in the opposite directions

They look like a fan

At the centre of the cross insert a pin and attach it to the rubber in

the pencil end

Holding the pencil and show the fan before a ceiling fan

Oh it spins very fast


8. Cardboard persistence of vision thread

Take a plain card board sheet of 2x2 inches

Draw a parrot on one side and a cage on the other side

Stick this to a stick or a pencil using cellotape

Holding the pencil between your fingers twirl it

Oh the parrot seems to be inside the cage

You can change the figures and enjoy

9. Balancing a stick

Take a long stick and try to balance it on your palm

You may find it easy or difficult to balance it

Now add a weight to the top of the stick and try to balance

Oh it's impossible to do

Now you may bring the weight to the bottom of the stick and balance

Oh it's much more easier to balance

10. Gem clip chain

Take some 30 or 40 gem clips

Try joining each clip to the other one

Oh you could make a long chain

Holding the ends of the long chain suspend it from both the ends
Oh it always makes a catenary arch

11. Book friction

Take two books of normal size

Keep the books with the leaves next to each other

Open the first page of the first book and on it place the first page of

the

Second book and interleave it

Now turn the second pages and interleave them

Like wise do for the entire book

Press all the pages tightly

Hold a book at on it's binding side and ask your mate to do the same

Try to pull apart the books

Oh it's very difficult to separate them by pulling them apart

12. Rubber band spring scale

Take a long thick rubber band and cut it open

Fix one of it to some stand and suspend it

Fix a small pan to the other end

Place a known standard weight on the pan

Mark the stretched length of the rubber band

Place lesser known weights and calibrate the rubber band length
Oh you have made a rubber band scale

With this you can weigh small weights

13. BCDEHIKOX MIRROR

Take a plain paper and Write the following in capital letters on the

paper

BOX COCK FOX BUN DEED GOOD WISDOM

Take a mirror and place it perpendicularly to the paper so that you

can read the reflections of the written words

Oh it's difficult to read the words written with other than

BCDEHIKOX which are symmetrical

14. Pushing tumbler inside water

Take some water in a bowl

Take a tumbler

Try to push the tumbler inside water with mouth open towards the

water surface

Oh you find it difficult to do so

15. Squeezing bottle


Take an empty plastic bottle with a cap

Open the cap and squeeze the bottle

Oh you can do it easily

Close the bottle with the cap tightly and try to squeeze it

Oh you find it very difficult

16. Shining egg

Take an egg

Take a candle and light it

Show the egg onto the flame of the candle and coat it with smoke

fully black

Place the egg into a glass tumbler and fill it with water and look at it

Oh the egg looks silver and shines

17. Candle inside a jar

Take a glass tumbler

Take a small candle and place it inside the tumbler

Light it

Cover the mouth of the tumbler with a plate and observe

Oh the candle is put of after a few seconds


18. Straw bend Bernoulli

Take a bendable straw

Keep the straw inside a tumbler full of water

Make a small hole at the bend away from the mouth as shown

Keep the straw in the mouth and blow air through the tube

Oh you get a spray of water

19. Water vapour condensation

Be careful

Place a vessel on the stove fill it with water and bring the water to

boil

Wait for the steam to appear

Now hold a metal plate above the vessel so that the steam spreads

on to the plate

Oh the steam hitting the plate turns into water

20. Cool water condensation

Take a glass of water

Wipe the outside of the tumbler clean

Drop an ice cube into the tumbler and observe the outer surface

Oh tiny water droplets start appearing on the sides of the tumbler


21. Water bottle many holes

Take a plastic water bottle

Make small pin prick holes at the bottom

Make a bigger hole in the cap

Place the bottle inside a bucket and fill it with water and close the

cap tightly

Covering the hole on the cap with your finger take the bottle out

Slowly remove your finger

Oh you are creating a rainfall

Close the hole the rain stops

22. Water oil detergent

Take a bowl of water

Add some oil to the water

Try to mix them vigorously

They always separate when left alone

Now add few drops of decaf detergent or soap oil an and mix

vigorously

Oh they mix easily


23. Water oil

Take some water in a long tube or bottle

Add a layer of oil close the bottle tightly

You see two clear layers of water and oil

Invert the bottle shaking it well

Oh after some time you see clearly again two clear layers

24. Water oil food colour salt

Take a transparent bowl of water

Place drops of oil on the surface of water

Add some food colouring to the oil

Sprinkle some salt on the drops of oil

Oh the oil droplets go down and come back again

25. Separating two glass plates

Take two small glass plates

Place a drop of water in between the plates

Try to separate them by pulling them apart

Oh it's very difficult to separate them now

Now try sliding them to separate

Oh it's very easy to separate


26. Chalk 45deg breaking

Take a full length of chalk piece

Hold the chalk at both the ends

Make a twist to break it

Oh it always breaks at 45 degrees angle

27. Chalk compression

Take a full length of chalk

Try to crush it holding the chalk between your thumb and index

finger

Oh it's very difficult to crush

Now hold it at both the ends and try to pull it apart

Oh it's very easy to pull it apart

28. Inclined plane angle

Take a flat lengthy strip of wooden piece

Place it horizontally on the ground

Place coins at one end

Do they move?

Now raise one side of the strip by an inch by supporting it on a book

Place coins and see if they move


Now keep on raising the strip until the coin moves

Oh more the angle faster the coin moves

29. Friction

Take a glass tumbler full of water

Place it on the table

Dry your palm and lift it

Now wet your palm and lift it

You find it difficult

Now apply soap to your palm lavishly and try to lift the tumbler

Oh it's more difficult to lift it

30. Ball bearing

Take two flat plates

Place them one over the other and try to move them

It's difficult to move

Now place some mustard seeds on a plate and place the other plate

on and move

Oh they move very easily

31. Fork balancing

Take two forks


Lock them together as shown

Try to balance them on a pencil tip

Oh they balance well

32. Potato doll

Take three small round potatoes of same sizes

Take three long broom sticks

One should be longer than the other two sticks

Insert the sticks to the potatoes as shown

Try to balance the setup on to an edge of your finger tip

Try spinning the setup

Oh they balance very well

35. Paper and inertia

Take a large sheet of news paper

Spread it on a table touching to the edges

Place a lengthy scale beneath the paper so that it protrudes outside

the table

Try to hit on the scale and lift the paper

Oh it's very heavy


36. Jaldharangam

Take seven porcelain tea cups

Place them on a table in a straight line from left to right

Fill them with water from left to right with a regular increase of water

say one scoop to seven scoops of water

Take a lengthy pencil and try tapping the cups as if playing a

musical instrument

Oh you get beautiful tunes

37. Paper cup telephone

Take two similar paper cups

Make a hole at the bottom of the cups

Take two metres of a thick thread and make a knot and insert it

through the hole of a cup and secure it

Similarly do go the other cup

Now ask your friend to place one cup to his ear and you speak into

the other cup

Oh your friend could hear you clearly

39. Take some baking soda in a water bottle

Pour some water to it


Add food colour to it

Add some soap powder to it

Add some vinegar to it

Oh there Comes out a fizzy guzzling lava out from the bottle

40. Take a candle and Light it

Take the rind of an orange

Squeeze it on to the flame of the candle

Oh the juice is catching fire and sparks

41. Take two rectangle chart boards of same size like a postcard

Fold one into a cylindrical shape and another one into a cuboidal

shape

Join the edges with a cellotape

Now fill the cuboid with some sand or grain to the brim

Now transfer the content of the cuboid to the cylinder

Oh you will be be surprised to see that both the volumes are not the

same and the cylinder takes in more

You can make other shapes and compare

42. Take a bottle cap


Cut a balloon and take a small piece of it

Stretch the balloon on to the bottle

Keep the bottle cap near your lips and blow air

Oh you make a shrill noise

43. Take some baking soda in a water bottle

Have a balloon ready

Add some vinegar to it

Now quickly fix the balloon to the mouth of the bottle

Oh with out any ones effort the balloon blows out

44. Take a candle

Light it with a match stick

Now take the candle and hold it at the bottom and try changing the

position of the candle - horizontally, vertically, slanting ,inverted

Oh whatever the position of the candle is, the flame always goes

up

46. Take a water bottle

Punch five small holes near the bottom as shown

Pour water into the bottle

The water rushes out through the holes

But oh the water stream join together at a distance and flow as a

single stream

47. Take a water bottle

Make a small hole at the bottom of the bottle

Fix a balloon inside the bottle as shown

Try to blow the balloon inside the bottle

The balloon inflates

Now close the small hole with a finger and blow the balloon

Oh it's impossible to do

48. Take a long thread

Make some five or six knots at one inch gap on the thread

Take a paper cup and make a small hole at the bottom of it

Make a big knot at one end of the thread and fix it to the bottom of

the cup

Now holding the paper cup tightly pull the thread with the knots in a

jerky twitch
Oh the cup makes strange noises

49. Take some milk in a shallow plate

add different food colour drops

Just touch the milk with a drop of dish washing liquid

Great there is a riot of colours streaming across

50 Take a piece of stone drop it

Take a a4 paper drop it

Now drop the stone and paper simultaneously

Now crush the paper drop it

now drop the stone and crushed paper

The Stone and paper reach the ground simultaneously

How strange

51. Take a thin film of paper

Hold it between your fingers of both the hands and stretch it tightly

near your lips

Purse your lips and blow air across the thin film

What a shrill noise you make

Try it with various pieces of paper


52 Take a shallow plate

fill it with water

Sprinkle some pepper powder on it and see them floating evenly

Dip your index finger into the pepper surface

Now touch some soap oil and dip your finger again

Oh my God the pepper powder all are scared off and repel away

53 Take an empty plastic bottle

Place it lying on it's sides on the table

Place a piece of chalk at the mouth inside the bottle

Try to push the chalk inside the bottle by blowing air on to it

However you try you fail in your attempts

Are you that much a weakling

54 Take a candle and light it with a match stick

Let the match stick be still burning

Blow out the candle and find white smoke coming from it

Take the burning match stick to the smoke stream

Oh the flame flies across and lights the candle again

Try it again and again


55 Take a brick or any solid weight

Tie it with a jute rope

Hold it with the tip of the rope and feel how heavy it is

Now immerse it in a bucket of water

Try to lift it

It seems to weigh less

Oh may be you have become a Superman

56. Take a solid ice cube in a cup

Heat it with a candle flame

Oh it turns into water

Now take a camphor

Light it with a candle

Oh oh no liquid the camphor has disappeared

57. Take a paper cup

Half fill it with plain water

Light a candle

Hold it on the flame

Then and there touch the water and feel it's temperature

Oh the water is heating up and bay boil soon


58. Take a piece of paper

Show it on a candle flame

The paper is burning

Take a coin and fold the paper on to it

Now show the paper with the coin on to the candle flame

Oh the paper does not burn but becomes black only

59. Take a cup of water and place it on the table

Take a jute string

Dip it in the water and make it wet

Now suspend the string from the cup inside to outside and watch

Oh oh the water starts dripping from the cup with out any effort

I hope you should be a magician

60. Take a solid weight

Tie it with a thread string

Leave some loose ends on both the sides

Tie one end to a support so that the weight is suspended in mid air

Now hold the other end of the thread and pull it suddenly

Oh the Thread alone breaks below the weight

Now pull slowly

Oh the thread snaps at the top and the weight comes crashing down
Really you should be a magician to do that

61. Take a cup of tea or hot water

Now purse your lips and blow slowly

Oh you get cool air which cools the drink

Now wide open your mouth and exhale air on to your palms

Oh its warm

Another magical effort by you to blow hot and cold air from the same

mouth

62. Take a glass of water to the brim

Invert it

Oh the water falls down

Take water again and with a thin card board cover the glass

Now invert the glass suddenly

Oh oh the water is not spilling out

63. Take a glass tumbler

Cover it with a thin cloth

Pour water into the tumbler through the cloth

Water fills the tumbler - naturally


Now tighten the cloth around the glass and invert it

Oh unnatural the water doesn't spill out

64. Take a paper cup and tie a string to it so as to suspend it

normally and extend the string

Fill the cup with water

Now hold the string and lift the cup and slowly and steadily try to

rotate the cup vertically

Oh oh oh the water doesn't spill out

Really you are a great magician

65. Take a bowl of water

Add some detergent to it and mix well

Let it stand for some time

Meanwhile make a conical paper straw

Dip the broad end of the straw into the soapy liquid

Keep the other end of the straw in the mouth and blow slowly

Oh you are making out beautiful soap bubbles

66. Take a shallow plate

Add some water to it


Put one drop each of different food colours into the plate and mix

well

Take a white chalk and allow it to stand in the middle of the plate for

some time

After some time take the chalk and break it

Oh you find various colours have seeped in to the chalk to different

extent

67. Take a glass tumbler

Fill it with a transparent aerated drink

Drop some naphtha balls or grapes into it the drink

Watch

Oh the balls rise and fall magically

68. Take a big syringe

Take some water into it

Close the tip and push the plunger

It's very difficult to push or compress the water

Empty the syringe wipe it clean

let some smoke into it from a doop stick and fill it

Now close the tip and push the plunger

Oh the smoke can be compressed


69. Take a big syringe

Close the plunger

Dip the tip into a glass tumbler of water and pull the plunger

Oh the water is sucked in

Now push the plunger back

Oh the water spurts out

70 Take a glass tumbler half filled with water

Now pour some oil into the tumbler

The oil floats

Now dip a syringe into water and suck it so that oil alone remains

in the tumbler

Now oil is at the bottom and more pour water over the oil

Oh the water slowly passes into the oil and goes down so that water

remains on the top as before

71 Take a glass tumbler fill it with water to the brim

Place a plastic ball in the water

The ball will slide to the edge of the tumbler

Try to bring it to the centre


How ever you try it is not possible

Now you have a method to do it

Add water to the glass tumbler drop by drop

Viola the the ball slowly moves to the centre

72 Take a paper throw it

It never flies

Fold it as shown in drawing

Now throw it

Oh it flies

73 Take a plastic water bottle

Punch three holes as in figure

Cover the holes and fill it with water

Open the holes

The water spurt out to different length from holes

74 Take a shallow vessel and keep it in sunlight

Fill it with water

Take a mirror

Place the mirror inside water in a slanting position and adjust it till

you get a rainbow on the wall


75. Take a visiting card

Hold it with your right thumb and index finger

With the left thumb and index finger just below the right hand try to

catch the card as you drop it

It's easy to catch

Ask some one else to catch the card as you drop

Oh it's impossible to catch

76. Take a shallow plate free of oil

Pour some water into it

Take a piece of match stick

Break it into two

Place a small blob of soap at one end of the stick

Place this on the surface of water

Oh the sticks move in their own madly

77. Take a piece of paper draw two arrows as shown and stand it

erect

Take a glass tumbler and place it in front of the arrows

Looking at the arrows through the glass Now slowly fill the tumbler

with water
Oh the arrows have changed direction

78 . Take two glass tumblers

Fill one with hot water

Fill another one with cold water

Take some food colouring and place a drop in each tumbler

Oh the food colour spreads quickly in the tumbler with hot water

79 Take a shallow plate

Place a coin in it

Pour some water so that the water dips the coin

Can you take the coin out without wetting the finger

Now take a tumbler

Put a piece of burning paper inside the tumbler

Invert the tumbler suddenly on to the plate without touching the coin

Oh what a miracle the tumbler sucks the water exposing the coin to

be taken out

80. Take a raw egg

Try to stand it erect on it's broader side on a smooth surface without

any support

It's almost impossible


Now tap the broader side on the floor and you see a dent there

Oh now it's easy to stand the egg on it's broader side

You can try this with a boiled unshelled egg also

81. Take a balloon

Blow it sufficiently large

Leave it suddenly

Oh it flies unpredictably

82. Take a tumbler

Cover it with a thin card

Place a coin at the centre

Give a flick to the card

Oh the coin drops inside the tumbler without flying away

83. Take your mobile phone

Play a steady music in it

Hold the mobile tightly in your hand and rotate it

Oh the pitch is varying like a siren

84. Take a small square piece of paper


Cut the paper as shown to a certain length

Now hold the paper at the opposite ends and try to tear it into three

pieces in one stroke

85. Take a glass tumbler fill it with water to the brim

Place a plastic ball in the water

Take a plastic comb

Rub it vigorously on your hair on the head

Bring it near the ball without touching it and move the comb

Oh the ball is attracted by the comb and follows it

86. Take a balloon

Blow it sufficiently large

Now press the mouth tightly and let air escape through a small hole

Oh it makes a shrill noise

Cut two pieces of cellotape and stick them on to the balloon

Take needle pins and punch the balloon through the cello tapes

Nothing happens
Now take pin and poke the balloon else where

Boom

Oh the balloon bursts

88. Take a tea bag

Empty it and place it on the ground mouth down

Now light it with a match stick at the bottom and watch

Oh suddenly it takes off and flies

Be careful

89. Take a tumbler full of water

Try to float a needle on the surface of water

It's almost impossible

Now place a small piece of tissue paper on the water surface

Place the needle on the tissue paper and watch

Oh the paper sinks and the needle floats on the water surface

90. Take a one foot scale

Hold it on your index fingers as given in the diagram

Now try to move the fingers randomly

It's difficult
The fingers move on their own only unlike your wish

Finally oh the fingers always meet at the middle of the scale

91. Take an empty milk cover

Fill it with water

Take a sharpened pencil

Hold the water packet tightly in your left hand

Punch through the water packet with the pencil in one stroke

Oh the water never spills

92. Take a drinking straw

Cut two inches of length from it

With a scissors make a V cut at one end

Keep the V end in the mouth between the lips and blow air through

the straw

Oh you get a shrill sound

93. Take a strip of paper of length one feet by one inch

Hold it at one end near the lips and let it flow down

Now purse your lips and blow over the strip

Oh the paper rises up and flutters


94. Take two straws

Put them in the mouth and try to drink water from a tumbler

It's easy

Put both the straws into your mouth

Now at the other end have one end inside water and the other end

of the straw out side the tumbler

Try to drink

Oh it's impossible to drink

95. Take a thin candle

Sharp the other end and take the thread out

The candle has two wicks now

Pass a thin needle through the candle almost at the centre of it's

length

Suspend the candle between two supports

Now light the candle at both the ends and watch

Oh the candle is oscillating like a see saw

96. Take a balloon

Blow it sufficiently large

Take a needle pin and punch the balloon through

Boom the balloon bursts


Now take another balloon and blow it

Now with a pin poke the balloon at the place opposite to the

mouth where there is a thick patch of balloon

Oh nothing happens

97. Take a balloon

Blow it sufficiently large

Attach a straw to it's mouth and tie it tightly

Now insert the other end of the straw into a tumbler of soap water

Oh the soap water bubbles and gurgles producing soap bubbles

98. Take a straw

Try to drink water from a tumbler

It's very easy to drink

Now add one straw to the first straw and increase it's length

Try to drink water

Like this keep increasing the straw length and drink water

Oh after three or four lengths of straw it's difficult to drink

99 Two balls jumping


Take a normal rubber ball

Bounce it – it jumps

Take a small plastic ball – it hardly jumps

Now hold the plastic ball over the rubber ball and drop it

Oh the plastic ball jumps very high

100. Spoon thread and sound

Take an eversilver spoon

Take two meters of thread

Tie the spoon at its centre

Hold the ends of the thread tightly with your finger tips

Place your finger tips inside the ear canal

Bang the spoon over a wall or table

Oh you hear a tingling sound
