Definition
Capacity.- Capacity is the quantity of product that is obtained from a process per unit of time, that is, it is the
declaration of the production rate of the company. Companies that use a different measurement of capacity are
usually service organizations, for example, hospitals that have the number of beds available as a measure of
capacity.
Capacity in Education.- The capacity in an educational institution can be determined as the maximum amount of
resources that an operating unit can maintain. These operating units can be defined as faculties, schools, classrooms,
available laboratory facilities, administrative staff, etc. Educational institutions have a limited number of spaces for
teaching and resources that must be used efficiently. This efficiency is generally referred to as "utilization", which is
basically the fraction of hours/chair or hours/resource currently being used.
Requirements for Measuring.-
Capacity is generally defined as a set of resources used to create value for the customer. The definition of a unit of
measure is the starting point for capacity planning. Any element that can be measured in terms of capacity can be
classified into one of the basic components listed below: Space, Work, Equipment, Information technology,
Materials.

RECOMMENDATIONS
• It is recommended to make this study at the
beginning of each semester prior to student
enrollment to determine the appropriate amount of
resources (classrooms) in any of the careers within
the ESPOL.
