Dear Candidates,

The Brief
You and your team are applying for a place in one of JESS’ Year 6 Formula Ethara teams.
The team will research, design, manufacture, test and race the fastest car possible
driven by compact compressed air. You will need to create a pit display and wear team
outfits, as well as have a strong understanding of how to account for income and
expenditure. The team will be entering the U.A.E National Finals in the Summer Term.
Each team has specific roles and you must apply for the role that suits you best. Your team should have no
more than 4 team members. (Mixed gender teams are encouraged but not essential).

The club will run at an agreed time once we have selected this year’s teams.

The following job roles you can apply for are:

Team Manager
Responsible for managing the team, ensuring that all of the cars are ready for the finals. The team manager
works closely with all members of the team, offering assistance where necessary. Responsible for liaising with
sponsors alongside the resources manager.

Resources Manager
Organises time, materials and equipment for the design and making of the cars. They are also responsible for
developing ideas regarding the teams marketing (presentation). The resources manager will need to liaise with
all the members to check tasks are progressing on time and offer additional help, if needed.

Design Engineer
Responsible for designing the car while taking into account the aerodynamic performance. The design
engineers will need to liaise with the manufacturing engineers to ensure their ideas can be realised.
Responsible for producing the colour schemes applied to the vehicle, including any special sponsorship decals,
together with any additional marketing material.

Manufacturing Engineer
Manufacturing engineers will need to liaise with the design engineers to design the net of a card/paper-based
model car first then help create the car. Responsible for advising team members on the manufacture of the car.
They will also report and help solve any problems with the construction of the car.

To apply for a place in the competition, you must be able to verbally present why you are the right
candidates. These presentations will be held in the first week after the holidays at lunch time (week beginning
5th January 2020) and must be no longer than four minutes long.

- Tell us why your team are right for the job;

- Produce a presentation showing a basic understanding of aerodynamics;
- Explain how you and your team will raise money from sponsorship to enable you to fund your project
(do you know how you will go about arranging and collecting sponsorship deals? Do you have any
ideas of sponsors already?)
- Present three draft (drawn or computerised) versions of your team logo;
- Make sure you stand out from the rest of the candidates;
- OPTIONAL: evidence of technical computing skills is very welcome (you only have four minutes to make
a really good impression!)
