INTERFERENTIAL THERAPY

• Interferential therapy is that in which medium frequency currents are used as a

low frequency effect.

• PRINCIPLE
Its produces the interference effect where two medium frequency current cross in
patients tissue. One of the currrents is kept at a constant frequency of 4000Hzand the
other can be varied between 3900 to 4000Hz.An interference effect at a beat
frequency equal to difference in frequency between the two currents is produced in
the tissues at the point where the two current cross.
Eg-circuit A 4000Hz
circuit B 3900Hz (both medium frequency)
Beat frequency 100 Hz (low frequency)
By varying the frequency of second circuit relative to constant frequency of first,it
is possible to produce a range of beat frequencies deep in a patients tissue.
INDICATIONS
• REDUCTION OF PAIN-By pain gate mechanism
• REDUCTION OF OEDEMA
• STRESS IN CONTINENCE-As it is possible by placing the electrodes
on the lower abdomen and inner thigh to produce good strong
conraction of pelvic floor.
• Useful adjunt to other techniques
• BURSITIS.
• SPORTS MEDICINE.
• EPICONDYLITIS.
• MUSCLE RE-EDUCATION AND STRENGTHENING DUE O
STIMULATION OF MUSCLES.
• INCREASE IN LOCA CIRCULATION BY REDUCTION IN SYMPATHETIC
ACTIVITY.
• REDUCTION OF MUSCLE SPASM
CONTRADICTIONS

• CARDIAC PACEMAKER.
• PREGNANCY.
• THROMBOSIS
• ACUTE DANGER OF HEMORRHAGE.
• METAL IMPLANT.
• OVER PHARYNGEAL REGION AS IT CAUSES
IETRFERENCES WITH BREATHING AND
SWALLOWING CO-ORDINATION.
• MALIGNANCY.
SIDE EFFECTS
The most common side effects with
electrotherapy is skin irritation or rash, caused
by the adhesives in the electrodes or the tape
holding the electrodes in place.
Over using electrotherapy may cause a burning
feeling in the skin.
