Identification Test for Potassium iodide (photo documentation)

1. Add a pinch of the salt in water and stir.

Result: The salt was dissolved, thus, making it soluble in water.

Prepared Potassium iodide by the group Commercial Potassium iodide

2. To the above solution, add silver nitrate T.S.

Result: Formation of yellow precipitate of AgI

Prepared Potassium iodide by the group Commercial Potassium iodide

3. To another solution of the salt, add hydrochloric acid or sulfuric acid.

Result: Formation of white precipitate.
Rationale: The reagents used was concentrated Hydrochloric acid and Sulfuric acid, thus, no formation of white
precipitate formed. The reagents that was supposed to be used is diluted HCl and sulfuric dioxide gas.

Identification Test for Potassium bitartrate (photo documentation)

1. Heat the crystals at high temperature.

Result: Ash-like forming chars

Prepared Potassium bitartrate by the group Commercial Potassium bitartrate

2. Dissolve the residue in water and perform the Beilstein’s test.

Result: Negative result for Beilstein’s test.

Prepared Potassium bitartrate by the group Commercial Potassium bitartrate

3. Prepare a saturated aqueous solution of potassium bitartrate, neutralized with sodium hydroxide, add silver
nitrate T.S.
To the precipitated formed, dissolve it with ammonia T.S. and the solution warmed.
Result: Silver mirror/metallic silver is deposited along the inner walls of the test tube.

Prepared Potassium bitartrate by the group Commercial Potassium bitartrate

4. Prepare a 1% resorcinol solution in a hydrochloric acid. Add a few drops of this solution to a dry salt of potassium
bitartrate. Then add 3 mL of sulfuric acid and slowly heat the solution.
Result: Rose-red color is formed; after heating, it becomes colorless.

Prepared Potassium bitartrate by the group Commercial Potassium bitartrate

4. Acidify a tartarate solution with acetic acid. Add a few drops of ferrous sulfate T.S. and hydrogen peroxide T.S.,
then add an excess of sodium hydroxide T.S.
Result: Purple/violet color of solution.
