Study of AC response of Series RLC Circuit

Aim: To experimentally verify the working of RLC series circuit with sinusoidal AC voltage input.

Apparatus:
1. Function Generator
2. Multimeter
3. Breadboard
4. Connecting Wires
5. Resistor – 560, 1 k Ohm
6. Capacitor – 0.1 µF, 0.01 µF, 0.001 µF
7. Inductor Coil – 10 mH, 30 mH, 33 mH

Circuit Diagram:

Fig. 1

Procedure:

1. Make the circuit diagram as shown in the Fig.1 on the breadboard.

2. Manually calculate the current, phase angle, VR, VL, VC for the circuit for a given voltage and
frequency.
3. Now, set the signal in the generator to be a sine wave of amplitude 10V (p-p) with Period of
20 msec (50 Hz) in ‘High Z’ mode.
4. For L = 10mH, R = 560 Ω and combinations of C = 0.1 µF, 0.01 µF, 0.001 µF, with source
frequency ranging from 50 Hz to 5 kHz, note down the voltage across the elements R, L, C
and Source (source voltage should be measured after connecting the supply to the circuit, not
by calculating the open circuit RMS value from function generator). Then for various
combinations of frequency, R, L and C note voltages for Inductive, Resistive and Capacitive
scenarios in each combination of R, L, C. (make at least 3 different combinations of R, L, C)
5. Compare the calculated values of voltages with the measured values.
6. Draw the phasor diagrams for the combinations of R, L, C used, clearly mentioning all the voltages.
Study of AC response of Series RLC Circuit

Observations:
RL = Ω;
Resistance Inductance Capacitance Frequency
VR (in V) VL (in V) VC (in V)
(Rext) (in Ω) (in mH) (in µF) (in Hz)

Questions:

1. What difference did you observe in voltage across different components while changing capacitor
and inductor values?
2. How can you make the RLC circuit purely resistive?
3. Mention few applications of RLC series AC circuit in your daily life.
4. Why measured voltage across the inductor does not lead the current by 900
5. Draw the impedance diagram of the circuit using measured current through, and voltages across
the elements for any one set of readings?
6. For given values of R, L and C how does the measured/theoretical net Impedance of the circuit
vary, when the frequency varies from 50 Hz to 5 kHz, do you observe any unusual change in
voltage across the inductor.
