PART 1: IMPORTANT POINTS IN WORK IMMERSION

INTRODUCTION
Work Immersion is one of the course requirements for graduation. A Senior High School
student has to undergo work immersion in a business organization/establishment whose work
requirements are related to the specialization. Through this work immersion, the students are
exposed to and become familiarized with work-related environment related to their field of
specialization. “Work immersion is a key feature in the senior high school curriculum. It can be
conducted in different ways depending on the purposes and needs of the learners,” Education
Secretary Leonor Briones said.

The guidelines said work immersion which can range from 80 to 320 hours will enable
students to become familiar with the workplace, experience workplace simulation and apply their
competencies in areas of specialization.

“Work immersion will help develop among learners’ life and career skills, and will
prepare them to make decisions on postsecondary education or employment,” the guidelines
read. “Through partnership building, DepEd hopes that partner institutions will provide learners
with work immersion opportunities, workplace or hands-on experience, and additional learning
resources,” it added. The agency said schools may partner with recognized institutions or
organizations to come up with agreements on work immersion for students. As the students are
still minors, DepEd said work immersion requires parental consent.

President Aquino, the different government institutions involved in education, and

Congress has since made K to 12 a reality rather than a mere ideal.

As I looked over the paradigm created by the steering committee of the K to 12 reform
program however, I suddenly realized that we had overlooked a major gap in the system.

The curriculum has been reengineered from pre-school to tertiary general education. It is
now seamless, without disruptions caused previously by trifocalization and bureaucratic
structures. We have firmly agreed on what students should know and be able to do after 12 years
of basic education or more (if they go to college).

What is missing is a clear idea of what the term “Immersion” implies.

In the approved latest draft of the Senior High School (SHS) curriculum, students that choose to
take the Technical-Vocational-Livelihood and the Arts and Sports tracks are expected to spend
1,404 hours outside campus, doing “Immersion.”

Our country has had a lot of experience with on-the-job training (OJT) programs on the
collegiate level. Unfortunately, many (if not most) college OJT students are assigned only to
insignificant jobs in a company (answering the phone, making photocopies, making coffee that
sort of thing). Rarely are OJT students expected to produce the same products that regular
employees produce.

Immersion in SHS will be useless if it is patterned after most of the OJT experiences
currently being undertaken by college students.

In order to make Immersion meaningful and useful, we need to get the companies and not
just the schools aware of the educational objectives and processes of K to 12.

The human resources departments of companies have to know what it means to handle
inexperienced adolescents (still with no work ethic but with raging hormones), how to make
them do without pay what adult employees are doing for pay, what the design of the curriculum
is (Understanding By Design, remember?), what the role of Immersion is in the whole process of
lifelong learning, and so on. That means training for staff in companies. That means expertise
and funds.

“DepEd, in collaboration with its partners and stakeholders, shall ensure that all schools
and venues for learning are conducive to the education and safety of the learners. The safety of
learners is primary,” it added.

“Consequently, the maximum number of hours spent in the work immersion venue is 40
hours per week and no more than eight hours per day as provided by law,” the agency said.
DepEd stressed that work immersion should not be reduced as a mere recruitment tool for a
partner institution, saying that the students should also gain skills that will enable them to qualify
for other job options.

“Schools and students should not be asked to pay the senior high school partner
institution for any work immersion activity conducted. Fees for work immersion must only be set
after consultation with parents,” added the guidelines.

OBJECTIVES OF THE WORK IMMERSION

One of the goals of the K to 12 Basic Education Program is to develop in learners

the competencies, work ethic, and values relevant to pursuing further education and/or

joining the world of work. To achieve greater congruence between basic education and

the nation’s development targets, Work

Immersion, a required subject, has been incorporated into the curriculum. This subject

will provide learners with opportunities:

1. To become familiar with the work place;

2. For employment simulation; and

3. To apply their competencies in areas of specialization/applied subjects in authentic

work environments.

To achieve the above objectives, Work Immersion is thus a requirement for

graduation from secondary education. Learners are immersed in actual work

environments such as workshops offices and laboratories in which their prior training is

relevant. Work immersion will help develop among the learner’s life and career skills,

and will prepare them to make decisions on postsecondary education or employment.

Through partnership building, DepEd hopes that the Partner Institutions will provide

learners with work immersion opportunities, workplace or hands-on experience, and

additional learning resources. It aims to make the learners:

1. Appreciate the importance and application of the principles and theories learned in

school;

2. Enhance their technical knowledge and skills;

3. Enrich their skills in communications and human relations; and

4. Develop good work habits, attitudes, appreciation and respect for work.

By the time learners reach Senior High School, they would have already acquired

almost all the competencies and skills that would prepare them for the curriculum exits

(higher education, employment, middle-skills development, and entrepreneurship). Work

immersion provides them with an avenue to test them and apply what they have learned

in a non-school scenario. In work immersion, learners are not only able to apply their

previous training but are also able to experience the social interactions in a work

environment. Their experiences during work immersion will develop many skills and

values that would help them as they transition from high school to real life. To assure the

achievement of the above objectives of Work Immersion, this policy serves to guide

schools in:

1. Creating flexible work immersion arrangements for their learners;

2. Providing options for work immersion that are relevant to learners’ purposes and

needs;

3. Organizing work immersion opportunities for learners that are consistent with the

diverse human resource requirements of partner institutions for work immersion;

and

4. Articulating the scope and limits of work immersion in the context of basic

education when building relationships with work immersion partners.

VALUES AND ATTRIBUTES OF A STUDENT IN A

WORK IMMERSION

ADAPTABLE

Change is inevitable especially when it comes to business. Organizations often need to

offer new products or ideas to keep them marketable. Because of this trend, they need employees
who can easily adapt to change, someone who can keep abreast with current trends.

DEPENDABLE

Superiors are eyeing for someone whom they can rely on a person to whom they can
delegate responsibilities, thus making sure that the operations in the office are carried out
properly even their absence. In fact, in a survey conducted, it was revealed that dependability is
the best qualification that employers are looking for in an employee.

GOOD COMMUNICATORS

Employers will look for someone who can express themselves clearly both in written and
oral communication. Proper communication skills will lessen common company in the
workplace like miscommunication and misunderstanding among employees or between a
superior and his subordinate.

HARDWORKING

Hardworking employees are partners of an organization in reaching its goals. They are
the “army” that keeps the company moving forward an employee.

HONEST

Talented employees are assets to the company. However, companies give more weight to
honesty and integrity more than anything else. Honesty comes in different forms: honesty in
declaring entries in daily time record; honesty is the use of office supplies; honesty in performing
tasks even when the superiors are not around, and many more.
ORGANIZED

Part of the work in any establishment is to keep records and data at hand; thus they are
looking for someone who is organized, someone who can easily locate files and can present data.

PASSIONATE

A person who is love what he is doing is positive, enthusiastic in carrying out his tasks,
and seldom gets tired or experiences burnout. Companies need these types of employees, those
who keep doing their work with excellence because they are passionate about it.

PROFESSIONAL/ETHICAL

Rules are set in the office to make sure that bot only work is carried out properly but the
harmonious relationships among employees are also maintained. Employers would want
someone who follows company policies and exudes professionalism, thus serving as a good
example to others.

PUNCTUAL

Time is very important in the workplace. Every second counts. Employers look for
someone who values time because they relate punctuality and productivity and productivity is
equated to success. A punctual employee: reports to work on time, submit reports even prior to
the deadline, and accomplish things within the given schedule.

TEAM PLAYER

Most company works in team. Goals are achieved by team effort. An employer will look
for someone who can work in a team and encourage team members to achieve their goals.

COMPANY HISTORY

Tourism responsible for implementing policies and programs of the department
pertaining to the development, promotion, and supervision of tourism projects in
the Philippines.

Republic Act No. 9593 or “The Tourism Act of 2009” declares a national policy for
tourism as an engine of investment, employment, growth and national development, and
strengthening the Department of Tourism and its attached agencies to effectively and
efficiently implement that policy, and appropriating fund thereof.

The Act supports the establishment of Tourism Enterprise Zones (TEZs) established to be
the centers of tourism development in the country. TIEZA is mandated to designate,
regulate and supervise the TEZs established under this Act, as well as develop, manage
and supervise tourism infrastructure projects in the country.

The TIEZA is governed a Board of Directors (TIEZA Board) composed of Tourism

It started as a private initiative to promote the Philippines as a major travel destination;

the Philippine Tourist & Travel Association was organized in 1950. In 1956, the Board of
Travel and Tourist Industry was created by Congress As stipulated in the Integrated
Reorganization Plan in 1972 sanctioned as a law under Presidential Decree No. 1, as
amended, the Department of Trade and Tourism was established, reorganizing the then
Department of Commerce and Industry. A Philippine Tourism Commission was created
under the unified Trade and Tourism Department to oversee the growth of the tourism
industry as a source of economic benefit for the country.

In 1973, President Ferdinand Marcos created a new cabinet-level Department of Tourism

(DOT) by splitting the Department of Trade and Tourism into two separate departments.
Included in the new Department of Tourism, the agency Philippine Tourism
Authority (PTA) and the Philippine Convention Bureau (PCB) were created. The
Department of Tourism was then renamed Ministry of Tourism as a result of the shift in
the form of government pursuant to the enforcement of the 1973 Constitution.

In 1986, under Executive Order Nos. 120 and 120-A signed by President Corazon
Aquino, the Department of Tourism was reorganized and, correspondingly, the
Convention Bureau was renamed the Philippine Convention and Visitors Corporation,
and the Intramuros Administration was attached, previously being under the defunct
Ministry of Human Settlements. In 1998, the Department of Tourism assumed a
prominent role in culmination of centennial celebration of the
country's independence from the Spanish Empire in 1898.

In 2003, the Department of Tourism initiated one of its most successful tourism
promotion project

continually provide their moral, spiritual, emotional, and financial support.

To my classmates and friends who shared their words of advice and

encouragement to finish this portfolio.

And lastly, this is dedicated to the Almighty God, thank you for the guidance,

strength, power of mind, protection and skills and for giving me a healthy life. All of

PART 5: REFLECTION

PROBLEMS ENCOUNTERED
The first problem that I encountered in our Work Immersion is that before we got inside I

noticed that the light on the front desk was dark. The second problem that I encountered is that

their floor is a bit broken and needs a fix for no accident. The third problem that I encountered

was that the other rooms in the resort especially in the hotel room many toilet bowls are broken.

The fourth problem that I encountered was that the other staffs at the resort were mean and lazy.

Next is the kitchen, some kitchen utensils are not placed in the proper containers and the other

corner is not clean as well. Last is the gate on the beach, it's just made of wood and therefore

other people or animals coming out of the resort suddenly come inside.

SUGGESTION AND RECOMMENDATIONS

First, I would like to suggest to the manager of PTA to make the front desk clear the light

for a better view of the visitors. Second, I hope that the staffs of PTA fix the floors to avoid

accidents. Third, the toilet bowls should be fix in the resort especially in the hotel rooms so that

the visitors can use it well. Fourth, I would also like to suggest that if they will hire their staff

check first if they have a good behavior and long patience. Next is I hope they keep their kitchen

clean, also they should place the kitchen utensils in the correct containers so they do not get lost

and not hard to find. Last one is that they should hire a guard in the gate on the beach to be safe

and so that the people and animals can not immediately enter inside the resort.
SUMMARY OF WORK IMMERSION

“Work Immersion refers to the part of the Senior High School (SHS) Curriculum
consisting of 80 hours of hands-on experience or work simulation which the
Grades 11 and 12 students will undergo to expose them to the actual workplace
setting and to enrich the competencies provided by the school under the
supervision of the School Head and the designated personnel of the Partner.”

Immersion is done outside the school campus in a “Workplace Immersion

Venue,” defined as “the place where work immersion of students is done.
Examples of work immersion venues include offices, factories, shops and project
sites.”

When we found out our department we went straight

to the Philippine Tourism Authority (PTA) to start
