Bauxite Project WA

• A new mine is connected to the existing

infrastructure by a 10.5kM overland
conveyor.
• 18.5 Million tonnes per annum
• Product 80% passing 20mm
Flow Sheet

The flow sheet included:

• A 450t run of mine hopper with dual dump
access for Cat 785C 150t trucks,
• Two stages of primary sizing,
• Overland conveyor,
• Various plant belts and a travelling shuttle,
Flow Sheet ctd
• Impact crushing and screening with shuttle
and 2 x 1000t bins,
• A 20,000t live capacity conical stockpile
• A 400t feed bin onto the existing overland
bauxite conveyor via a belt feeder.
• Dust collection and suppression.

Overland Conveyor
The details of the overland conveyor are:
• 2 x 2640kW x 1000rpm motors.
• VVVF drives.
• The down hills loaded case can be regenerative.
• Tail low speed brake.
• Gravity take-up with winch for maintenance de-
tensioning.
Overland Conveyor ctd
• Belt speed 4.5m/s.
• Belt width 1400mm.
• Capacity 3500tph.
• Maximum lump 175mm longest dimension.
• 6000m horizontal curve.
• Large bridge over a brook.
• Tunnel under highway.
• Belt washing.
• Dust collection and suppression.
Overland Conveyor Route
Many restrictions. These included ownership
boundaries, bauxite zones, restricted
environmental zones, buffer zones for
neighbours etc. QUANTM was used to
analyze the route options based on conveyor
geometry and a set of economic parameters.
A horizontal curve was used to get past the
restricted zones.
Overland Conveyor “The Big Dipper”

110 m
• Uphills case requires almost double
the normal power
• Down hills goes regenerative

10500 m
Overland Conveyor Brook Crossing
• Located on horizontal curve
• Has vertical concave curve

Overland Conveyor Drives
• The drive system is base mounted and
connected by extended couplings to
allow for large alignment errors. The
drives have very large flywheels which
when combined with the tail brakes
control the dynamic tensions.

Overland Conveyor Energy and Noise
The rubber was tested and the loss properties used
to predict the demand power. Also large diameter
dynamically balanced machined rollers were used to
reduce the rolling friction.
Overland Conveyor Noise Contours
• Close neighbours and the history of the existing OBC
• Noise was reduced by limiting the belt speed, 1000rpm
low speed base mounted helical drives, low noise idlers,
and a special support module.

Overland Conveyor Clean up

• The head end area is all elevated to allow

equipment access for clean up.
Overland Conveyor Test Module
Module tested for vibration/natural frequencies.

The module has large pitch

idler sets that are mounted
directly on the support legs. Module will have bored
The foundations are bored pier foundations
piers, so that the idler set is
connected by the shortest
path to the ground.
