Satan has ability to suggest doubts and to devise objections to the pointed testimony that God

sends, and many think it a virtue, a mark of intelligence in them, to be unbelieving and to
question and quibble. Those who desire to doubt will have plenty of room. God does not
propose to remove all occasion for unbelief. He gives evidence, which must be carefully
investigated with a humble mind and a teachable spirit, and all should decide from the weight
of evidence. God gives sufficient evidence for the candid mind to believe; but he who turns
from the weight of evidence because there are a few things which he cannot make plain to his
finite understanding will be left in the cold, chilling atmosphere of unbelief and questioning
doubts, and will make shipwreck of faith. CCh 93.4

(2Pe 3:17 KJV) Ye therefore, beloved, seeing ye know these things before, beware lest ye also,
being led away with the error of the wicked, fall from your own stedfastness.

(2Pe 3:18 KJV) But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.
To him be glory both now and for ever. Amen.

“Our condemnation in the judgment will not result from the fact that we have
been in error, but from the fact that we have neglected heaven-sent
opportunities for learning what is truth.”

“The instruction to be communicated to John was so important that Christ came from heaven
to give it to His servant, telling him to send it to the churches.” 7SDA Bible Com 954

Hos 4:6 My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge: because thou hast rejected
knowledge, I will also reject thee, that thou shalt be no priest to me: seeing thou hast
forgotten the law of thy God, I will also forget thy children.

The Bible is God's great lesson book, His great educator. The foundation of all true science is
contained in the Bible. Every branch of knowledge may be found by searching the word of
God. And above all else it contains the science of all sciences, the science of salvation. The
Bible is the mine of the unsearchable riches of Christ. {COL 107.2}

The present is a time of overwhelming interest to all living. Rulers and statesmen, men who
occupy positions of trust and authority, thinking men and women of all classes, have their
attention fixed upon the events taking place about us. They are watching the relations that
exist among the nations. They observe the intensity that is taking possession of every earthly
element, and they recognize that something great and decisive is about to take place,--that the
world is on the verge of a stupendous crisis. {Ev 194.2}

The Bible, and the Bible only, gives a correct view of these things. Here are revealed the
great final scenes in the history of our world, …--
Prophets and Kings, pp. 536, 537. (1916) {Ev 194.3}

The great controversy is nearing its end. Every report of calamity by sea or land is a testimony
to the fact that the end of all things is at hand. Wars and rumors of wars declare it. Is there a
Christian whose pulse does not beat with quickened action as he anticipates the great events
opening before us? The Lord is coming. We hear the footsteps of an approaching God. {Mar

Everything in the world is in agitation. The signs of the times are ominous. Coming events cast
their shadows before. The Spirit of God is withdrawing from the earth, and calamity follows
calamity by sea and by land. There are tempests, earthquakes, fires, floods, murders of every
grade. . . . Mar 35.3}

The Study of the Books of Daniel and the Revelation

God's Spirit has illuminated every page of Holy Writ, but there are those upon whom it
makes little impression, because it is imperfectly understood. When the shaking comes,
by the introduction of false theories, these surface readers, anchored nowhere, are like
shifting sand. They slide into any position to suit the tenor of their feelings of bitterness....
Daniel and Revelation must be studied, as well as the other prophecies of the Old
and New Testaments. Let there be light, yes, light, in your dwellings. For this we need to
pray. The Holy Spirit, shining upon the sacred page, will open our understanding,
that we may know what is truth....

There is need of a much closer study of the word of God; especially should Daniel
and the Revelation have attention as never before in the history of our work. We
may have less to say in some lines, in regard to the Roman power and the papacy; but we
should call attention to what the prophets and apostles have written under the inspiration
of the Holy Spirit of God. The Holy Spirit has so shaped matters, both in the giving of the
prophecy and in the events portrayed, as to teach that the human agent is to be kept out
of sight, hid in Christ, and that the Lord God of heaven and His law are to be exalted.
Read the book of Daniel. Call up, point by point, the history of the kingdoms there
represented. Behold statesmen, councils, powerful armies, and see how God wrought to
abase the pride of men, and lay human glory in the dust.... TM 112.1
The light that Daniel received from God was given especially for these last days.
The visions he saw by the banks of the Ulai and the Hiddekel, the great rivers of
Shinar, are now in process of fulfillment, and all the events foretold will soon come
to pass. TM 112.2

Consider the circumstances of the Jewish nation when the prophecies of Daniel were
given. TM 113.1

Let us give more time to the study of the Bible. We do not understand the word as
we should. The book of Revelation opens with an injunction to us to understand the
instruction that it contains. “Blessed is he that readeth, and they that hear the words of this
prophecy,” God declares, “and keep those things which are written therein: for the time is
at hand.” When we as a people understand what this book means to us, there will be seen
among us a great revival. We do not understand fully the lessons that it teaches,
notwithstanding the injunction given us to search and study it. TM 113.2

In the past teachers have declared Daniel and the Revelation to be

sealed books, and the people have turned from them. The veil whose
apparent mystery has kept many from lifting it, God's own hand has
withdrawn from these portions of His word. The very name
“Revelation” contradicts the statement that it is a sealed book.
“Revelation” means that something of importance is revealed. The truths
of this book are addressed to those living in these last days. We are
standing with the veil removed in the holy place of sacred things. We are
not to stand without. We are to enter, not with careless, irreverent
thoughts, not with impetuous footsteps, but with reverence and godly
fear. We are nearing the time when the prophecies of the book of
Revelation are to be fulfilled.... TM 113.3

We have the commandments of God and the testimony of Jesus Christ,

which is the spirit of prophecy. Priceless gems are to be found in the
word of God. Those who search this word should keep the mind clear.
Never should they indulge perverted appetite in eating or drinking. TM 114.1

If they do this, the brain will be confused; they will be unable to bear the
strain of digging deep to find out the meaning of those things which relate
to the closing scenes of this earth's history. TM 114.2

When the books of Daniel and Revelation are better understood,

believers will have an entirely different religious experience. They
will be given such glimpses of the open gates of heaven that heart and
mind will be impressed with the character that all must develop in order
to realize the blessedness which is to be the reward of the pure in heart.
TM 114.3

The Lord will bless all who will seek humbly and meekly to understand
that which is revealed in the Revelation. This book contains so much that
is large with immortality and full of glory that all who read and search it
earnestly receive the blessing to those “that hear the words of this
prophecy, and keep those things which are written therein.” TM 114.4
The Bible is its own expositor. Scripture is to be compared with
scripture. The student should learn to view the word as a whole, and to
see the relation of its parts. He should gain a knowledge of its grand
central theme, of God's original purpose for the world, of the rise of the
great controversy, and of the work of redemption. He should understand
the nature of the two principles that are contending for supremacy, and
should learn to trace their working through the records of history and
prophecy, to the great consummation. He should see how this controversy
enters into every phase of human experience; how in every act of life he
himself reveals the one or the other of the two antagonistic motives; and
how, whether he will or not, he is even now deciding upon which side of
the controversy he will be found. Ed 190.2

Every part of the Bible is given by inspiration of God and is profitable.

The Old Testament no less than the New should receive attention. As
we study the Old Testament we shall find living springs bubbling up where
the careless reader discerns only a desert. Ed 191.1

The book of Revelation, in connection with the book of Daniel,

especially demands study. Let every God-fearing teacher consider how
most clearly to comprehend and to present the gospel that our Saviour
came in person to make known to His servant John—“The Revelation of
Jesus Christ, which God gave unto Him, to show unto His servants things
which must shortly come to pass.” Revelation 1:1. None should become
discouraged in the study of the Revelation because of its apparently
mystical symbols. “If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that
giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not.” James 1:5. Ed 191.2

“Blessed is he that readeth, and they that hear the words of this
prophecy, and keep those things which are written therein: for the time is
at hand.” Revelation 1:3. Ed 191.3

Study Revelation in connection with Daniel, for history will

be repeated.... We, with all our religious advantages, ought to
know far more today than we do know. TM 116.3
As we near the close of this world's history, the prophecies relating to the
last days especially demand our study. The last book of the New
Testament Scriptures is full of truth that we need to understand. Satan has
blinded the minds of many so that they have been glad of any excuse for
not making the Revelation their study. But Christ through His servant John
has here declared what shall be in the last days; and He says, “Blessed is
he that readeth, and they that hear the words of this prophecy, and keep
those things which are written therein.” TM 116.5

It was my idea to have the two books bound together,

Revelation following Daniel, as giving fuller light on the subjects
dealt with in Daniel. The object is to bring these books together,
showing that they both relate to the same subjects. TM 117.2

A message that will arouse the churches is to be proclaimed. Every effort

is to be made to give the light, not only to our people, but to the world. I
have been instructed that the prophecies of Daniel and the Revelation
should be printed in small books, with the necessary explanations, and
should be sent all over the world. Our own people need to have the light
placed before them in clearer lines. TM 117.3

The perils of the last days are upon us, and in our work we are to warn the
people of the danger they are in. Let not the solemn scenes which
prophecy has revealed be left untouched. If our people were half awake, if
they realized the nearness of the events portrayed in the Revelation, a
reformation would be wrought in our churches, and many more would
believe the message. We have no time to lose; God calls upon us to watch
for souls as they that must give an account. Advance new principles, and
crowd in the clear-cut truth. It will be as a sword cutting both ways. But be
not too ready to take a controversial attitude. There will be times when we
must stand still and see the salvation of God. Let Daniel speak, let the
Revelation speak, and tell what is truth. But whatever phase of
the subject is presented, uplift Jesus as the center of all hope,
“the Root and the Offspring of David, and the bright and morning
Star.” TM 118.1

Brethren, the Lord calls for copartnership in his work. He desires us to

enlist our interests in his cause, as Daniel did. We should receive
great benefits from a study of the book of Daniel in
connection with the Revelation. Daniel studied the
prophecies. He earnestly sought to know their
meaning. He prayed and fasted for heavenly light. And
the glory of God was revealed to him in even greater
measure than he could endure. We are in equal need
of divine illumination. God has called us to give the
last message of warning to the world. There will be voices
heard on every side to divert the attention of God's people with new
theories. We need to give the trumpet a certain sound. We do not
half realize what is before us. If the books of Daniel and the Revelation
were studied with earnest prayer, we should have a better knowledge of
the perils of the last days, and would be better prepared for the work before
us—we should be prepared to unite with Christ and to work in his lines. RH

We have no time to lose. Troublous times are before us. The world is
stirred with the spirit of war. Soon the scenes of trouble spoken of in the
prophecies will take place. The prophecy in the eleventh of
Daniel has nearly reached its complete fulfillment.
Much of the history that has taken place in fulfillment of this prophecy will
be repeated. In the thirtieth verse a power is spoken of that “shall be
grieved, and return, and have indignation against the holy covenant: so
shall he do; he shall even return, and have intelligence with them that
forsake the holy covenant.” [Verses 31-36, quoted.] 13MR 394.1

MR No. 1593—A Call to Prepare for the Final Crisis
Read the first eleven verses of the fortieth chapter of Isaiah. Present the truth in its power, as it
is in Jesus. Keep the mind stayed on God and imbued with His Holy Spirit . Present the
affirmative of truth. Stand on the platform of eternal truth. But do not
accuse. Say nothing to arouse enmity and strife. 21MR 436.3
The truth, present truth for this time, will be meat in due season. Let
plain, authoritative truth be presented with decided assurance and in
the spirit of love and kindness, that the Holy Spirit's power may give
force to the words spoken. You are surely where many souls have become confused.
But Christ has promised, “Lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end.” We are to claim this
promise. The Lord is not asleep or indifferent to our faith, and He will give knowledge and grace
to all who will humble their hearts before Him. 21MR 436.4
Have perfect faith in the promises of Christ. “Teach them,” He said, “all that I have commanded
you.” The Lord has many precious souls in Battle Creek, and they need the very words of
instruction that Christ has given for them. The gospel of Christ is full of love, rich in assurance
and comfort. Every soul needs now to understand the foundation of his faith. In simple
language and under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, present the truth. We have the Word,
that wonderful Book, which contains the very instruction needed at this time. 21MR 436.5
The testing time is right upon us. We must build upon the Rock
that will stand the storm of test and trial. As we see the
fulfillment of prophecy, we know that the end of all things is at
hand. Present the eternal principles of truth. Show what the
Word of God declares is to take place on this earth. The God
who gave Daniel instruction regarding the closing scenes of
this earth's history will certainly confirm the testimony of His
servants as at the appointed time they give the loud cry. 21MR

All the messages given from 1840-1844 are to be made forcible now, for there are many people who
have lost their bearings. The messages are to go to all the churches. 21MR 437.1
Christ said, “Blessed are your eyes, for they see; and your ears, for they hear. For verily I say unto you,
That many prophets and righteous men have desired to see those things which ye see, and have not
seen them; and to hear those things which ye hear, and have not heard them” [Matthew 13:16, 17].
Blessed are the eyes which saw the things that were seen in 1843 and 1844. 21MR 437.2

The message was given. And there should be no delay in repeating the message,
for the signs of the times are fulfilling; the closing work must be done. A great
work will be done in a short time. A message will soon be given by God's
appointment that will swell into a loud cry. Then Daniel will stand in his lot, to
give his testimony. 21MR 437.3
The attention of our churches must be aroused. We are standing upon the borders of the
greatest event in the world's history, and Satan must not have power over the people of God,
causing them to sleep on. The papacy will appear in its power. All must now arouse and search
the Scriptures, for God will make known to His faithful ones what shall be in the last time. The
word of the Lord is to come to His people in power. 21MR 437.4

How little we know of what is going on in heaven! What fearful indifference those on this earth show to
eternal realities. Souls are unprepared for what is about to take place in our world; the warning must be
given, The end of all things is at hand. 21MR 438.2
Again I say to my ministering brethren in Battle Creek, Preach the Word. The last message of mercy is to
be given to prepare a people to stand in these last days. Everything is to be shaken that can be shaken,
that those things that cannot be shaken may remain. 21MR 438.3
This is what has been presented to me—that we are asleep, and do not know the time of our visitation.
But if we humble ourselves before God, and seek Him with the whole heart, He will be found of us.—
Letter 54, 1906. 21MR 438.4

Daniel stood in his lot to bear his testimony which was sealed until the time of the
end, when the first angel's message should be proclaimed to our world. These
matters are of infinite importance in these last days; but while “many shall be
purified, and made white, and tried,” “the wicked shall do wickedly: and none of
the wicked shall understand.” How true this is! Sin is the transgression of the law
of God; and those who will not accept the light in regard to the law of God will not
understand the proclamation of the first, second, and third angel's messages. The
book of Daniel is unsealed in the revelation to John, and carries us forward to the
last scenes of this earth's history. TM 115.3

Will our brethren bear in mind that we are living amid the perils of the last days?
Read Revelation in connection with Daniel. Teach these things. TM 115.4
In mercy to them He blended the description of the two great crises, leaving
the disciples to study out the meaning for themselves. When He referred to
the destruction of Jerusalem, His prophetic words reached beyond the event
to the final conflagration in that day when the Lord shall rise out of His place
to punish the world for their iniquity, when the earth shall disclose her blood,
and shall no more cover her slain. This entire discourse was given, not for
the disciples only, but for those who should live in the last scenes of this
earth s history. - The Desire of Ages, p. 628

Whatever may be man's intellectual advancement, let him

not for a moment think that there is no need of thorough
and continuous searching of the Scriptures for greater
light. As a people we are called individually to be
students of prophecy. We must watch with earnestness
that we may discern any ray of light which God shall
present to us. We are to catch the first gleamings of truth;
and through prayerful study clearer light may be obtained,
which can be brought before others. 5T 708.2
