Pollution: Danna Garcia & Nicole Ramirez Octubre 2018
Pollution: Danna Garcia & Nicole Ramirez Octubre 2018
These two problems have something in common as they include the hearing pollution. So we
consider, it is time to begin understanding that if we have caused the problem, we must be part of
the solution.
2. GENERAL AIM
To make a report about the pollution in Bogotá and how necessary is to take awareness to solve
this problem.
3. STAGE 1
Discovery and inspitation
Public transport
In these pictures, there are many people trying to get inside a bus, but it’s difficult, because there
aren’t enough busses for everybody. The worst is that the public transport provokes much riot
and robberies. Our government should organize the Transmilenio better in a way that everybody
can move easier.
Polluted rivers
In this picture, there is a river that is very polluted because of the people’s fault. Many of them
throw the waste away. The river has a horrible smell. Our government should improve the
cleaning service and take the garbage off from the rivers not to have so much pollution. Also,
more campaigns and education should be started.
People’s waste
In these pictures, there are much waste, there are remains of constrution where the people have
burned things. Also, there is so much garbage. This pollutes the ground and the vegetation that
grows there. Our government should educate the people to be cleaner. But also, the education
should start from home because the families are the first to teach values.
3.2 THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK
Environmental pollution
Pollution is one of the worst situations that our city must face because it seems to affect people’s
quality life. Just to highlight some of them, there is a trash crisis, much air pollution, hearing
pollution and even overpopulation.
BOGOTÁ IS ONE OF THE CITIES THAT MANAGES THE TRASH WORST
A study by the Public Service Superintendence shows that about 12 landfills exist in Colombia,
the one in the capital of the country is not a good example of good use. Among the three biggest
cities of Colombia (Bogotá, Medellin, Cali) the best designated landfill is the one in Cali based
on three criteria:
* Degree of control over the reception of waste and the general management of the site.
* Degree of control over the treatment and elimination of waste.
* Degree of monitoring and verification of environmental risks.
In order to assess the different degrees of quality, some aspects have been taken into account:
1: Vehicular access, security of the place, reception of the garbage and registration of the
vehicles that enter, discharge the waste, control over the inconveniences derived from the
operation of the landfill and fire control.
2: Groundwater protection, surface water protection, soil protection, gas management, leachate
management, safety and health of workers and aspects of health, safety and quality of life for
neighbors and bystanders.
3: Environmental impact study, monitoring of surface and groundwater, gas monitoring and
leachate monitoring.
An insufficient evaluation in any of the given criterion represented 0, low degree represented 5,
average degree was reflected in 10, average-high degree gives 15 and high degree to 20. The
results showed that the best landfill managed is the one in Medellin followed by Cali’s and in the
third place is Bogotá’s. The nearby community at the landfill of Doña Juana has recently
complained because of the garbage odor and plague at their homes, until they did a protest to
demonstrate it.
Also, the landfill of the capital is one with the most problems. “Exist two penalizing procedures
for affectation at the resource of the water for propagations generated in Doña Juana Landfill.
The first for unfulfilment to the rule of propagations imposed by CAR in 2008 and another by
propagations by the river Tunjuelo without permission and without treatment, activity that
although stopped, required an investigation”.
Since 2015 the Unit Administrative Special of Public Service (UAESP), presented a technical
study of alternatives of replacement at the Doña Juana landfill, but at this moment, it is still
found in the evaluation. The future of the garbage in Bogota is unsure and this it is reflected in
the bad mark awarded by the Public Service Superintendence.
Air pollution
The investigation that was made and published in the magazine “Atmospheric Environment”
compared to the exhibition of articulated material which is present in these forms of transport.
Specifically, the investigation measured the quantity of PM2.5 and eBC, two types of particles
that are found in the air, but that aren’t detected by the human eye being pollutant and resulting
from the combustion of fossil combustibles. The results were forceful: “A person is 140 minutes
with this system and he/she is in risk of gathering humongous pollution”.
An investigation about the quality of the air in the busses of Transmilenio revealed that breathing
inside an articulated lorry is worse for health than breathing in the street. In the long term, the
experts have secured that this can entail to serious problems of health.
Transmilenio
One of the biggest problems that our city has is related to the public transport (Transmilenio)
specially because of the congestion and the disturbance. Because of this, the people suffer of
robbery, delays, traffic jam, sexual harassment, assault, traffic accidents, as well as the price of
tickets, which is too expensive, added to the quantity of passengers that make people feel really
uncomfortable.
Also, on the other hand, there are many people that look for money from waking the passengers’
pity. It is seen through many Venezuelans who are arriving to work there informally which
shows the dimension that this immigration is taking in Colombia.
This is a fact reported by the Chancellery because their presence is not seen as legal
businessmen, but as informal sales obviously in Transmilenio. Behind them, the displaced
Colombians counting histories of violence and dispossession to the passengers who give them
alms or they buy them chocolates, sweets or ballpoints.
In every station a Venezuelan climbs speaking about his/her unemployment and his/her family
being hungry from the distance. Some of them sell the same products that Colombians once
offered. Even, they already know where to acquire them and they have become experts in the
routes and the stations that are more profitable. This has produced more unemployment for the
Colombian population, and more than all to the street vendors.

This person may help our research because the topic is part of his daily life, for this reason, he can
observe the problem since a better point of view, for example: The abuse towards the people who use this
means of transport and the congestion that is formed in the peak hour.

Conclusion
CONCLUSION
I learned much from the person that I interviewed because is someone that lives the problem of
public transportation day by day, even more than me. Her knowledge about the oil composition
helps her to aware about how fracking isn’t the best option for the country and also, it helps me
to agree with her thoughts and speak my ideas out.

N: Although the garbage trucks go down these places, the garbage remains here.

D: what do you think about the pollution in Bogota?
D: is your origin country much polluted? Why?
N: Now we are going to do an experiment picking the garbage up of the street. While we do it,
we record the people’s reaction. Then we are going to do a question to some different people
about what we are doing.
So we are going to go to a place where there are many people
Luego del experimento

N: ¿Que piensa sobre lo estamos haciendo? ¿te atreves a ayudarnos a recoger un papel?
What do you think about what we are doing? Do you dare to help us pick up a paper?
Do you think as Colombians we love our country, seeing all the garbage in the streets?
It’s a pleasure to introduce the students: Danna Garcia and Nicole Ramirez, who have attended

which is named PROJECT, given in their opposite shift.
I write to tell you that our students want to generate some awareness about the pollution and they
want you to socialize their initiative, which is named YOU DON’T POLLUTE, YOU ARE
KILING YOURSELF and whose main aim is to make a report about the pollution in Bogotá and
As well, I would like to know your point of view once they have presented their work and
initiative:
