expeditions with the aim of taking full control over the
islands, which, unfortunately failed.
Fray Urdaneta, an Augustinian priest tried his
luck by coming to the Philippines with four other priests
and Miguel Lopez de Legazpi, the designated military
governor of the new Spanish Colony named after King
Philip II. Upon their arrival, the natives of Cebu started
fighting against them with the thought that the Spaniards
were back to seek vengeance for the death of Magellan.
Legazpi thought armed with an instruction from King
Philip II to smoke the peace pipe with the natives, had no
recourse but to fight back. He ordered the ship’s Artillery
to fire, causing the natives to space to the mountains.
With the natives in hiding, Legazpi and his men
conducted house-to-house inspection. A soldier, Juan
Camus found the Sto. Niño inside a wooden box. Fray
Urdaneta took the image to a provisional chapel and said
a thanksgiving mass for the success of the expedition
which aimed to convert every native to Christianity.
The rest, they said, is history. Since then, there
was no stopping of the popularity of the Sto. Niño. It has
earned countless devotees not only in Cebu but
throughout the Philippine islands. Today, the original Sto.
Niño enshrined at the Basilica Minore side chapel of Cebu
continues to draw people by the thousands of its
reputation to possess miraculous powers.
