BASE ISOLATION
● Base Isolation is a method in which the structure(superstrucure)
is separated from the base(foundation or substructure) by
introducing a flexible or sliding interface between the base and
mainstructure.
PURPOSE OF BASE ISOLATION
• Base Isolation reduce the seismic demand instead of increasing
the capacity.
• Controlling ground motion is impossible, but we can modify the
demand on structure by preventing /reducing the motion being
transfered to the structure from foundation.
PRINCIPLE OF BASE ISOLATION
● The basic principle behind Base Isolation is that the response of
the structure is modified such that the ground below is capable of
moving without transmitting minimal or no motion to the structure
above.
BASIC REQUIREMENTS OF AN
ISOLATION SYSTEM
● Flexibility.
● Damping.
● Resistance to vertical or other service loads.
● Re-centering capability.
TYPES OF BASE ISOLATION
SYSTEMS
● Elastomeric Rubber Bearings.
● Roller and Ball Bearings.
● Springs.

STRUCTURES
ADVANTAGES
● Reduced the seismic demand of structure, there by reducing the
cost of structure.
● Lesser displacements during an earthquake.
DISADVANTAGES
● It is not suitable for structures resting on soft soils.
● Becomes less efficient for high rise buildings.
● Base Isolaion can not be applied partially to the structure.
● Implementation in efficient manner is difficult and often requires
highly skilled labours and engineers.
