Grade 10 Activity Sheet on Electricity and Magnetism

Activity 1: Magnetic Field Mapping

Objectives
1. Describe the region around a magnet.
2. Draw the magnetic field lines around a bar magnet.
3. Draw the magnetic field lines around a U-shaped magnet.
4. Draw the magnetic field lines around a combination of magnets.

Materials
2 bar magnets, U-shaped magnet, magnetic field board
sheets of paper, pencil

Procedure

1. Place a single bar magnet on a flat surface.

2. Shake the magnetic field board to equalize the distribution of iron filings in the liquid.
3. Put the magnetic field board on top of the bar magnet.
4. Observe the line patterns that will be formed.
5. Place a clean sheet of paper on top of the magnetic field board and trace the line patterns
that were formed. Answer the following questions:

Q1. What do the line patterns form?

______________________________________________________________________________
Q2. Were the lines evenly distributed or did they seem to concentrate on specific areas?
______________________________________________________________________________
Q3. What does this tell you about bar magnets?
______________________________________________________________________________

6. Repeat steps 1-5 but this time use a U-shaped magnet. Answer the following questions:

Q4. What do the line patterns form?

______________________________________________________________________________
Q5. Were the lines evenly distributed or did they seem to concentrate on specific areas?
______________________________________________________________________________
Q6. What does this tell you about U-shaped magnets?
______________________________________________________________________________

7. Get two bar magnets and lay them on a flat surface side by side but not touching each other.
First, with both N-marked / S- marked ends near to each other. Second, with N-marked and
S-marked ends near to each other.

8. Put the magnetic field board on top and trace again the line patterns that will be formed.

Q7. How would you describe the line patterns formed with like ends of the magnet? What do
these imply?
__________________________________________________________________________
Q8. How would you describe the line patterns formed with opposite ends of the magnet?
What do these imply?
___________________________________________________________________________
