Thermocouple Module Calibration Apparatus

Aim: - To calibrate given Thermocouple with the help of glass thermometer.

Description:-
This Module consists of basic thermocouple transducer, electric heater water bowl,
Ice Bath and a digital temperature indicator and calibration potentiometer, with necessary
circuit and associated components housed in a Double Din Box are provided. Ice Bath &
Heater with Bowl are provided for minimum & maximum calibration.

With the help of this set-up student himself can study the calibration process and
basic aspects of Temperature measurement devices.

Introduction:-
In 1821, Thomas Seebeck discovered if metals of two different materials were
joined at both ends and one end was at a different temperature than the other, a current
was created. This phenomenon is known as the Seebeck effect and is the basis for all
thermocouples.

Seebeck effect is actually the combined result of two other phenomena,

Thomson and Peltier effects.

• Thomson observed the existence of an EMF due to the contact of two

dissimilar metals at the junction temperature.

Department of Mechanical Engineering SVKM’S iot, Dhule.

• Peltier discovered that temperature gradients along conductors in a circuit
generate an EMF. • The Thomson effect is normally much smaller than the Peltier
effect.

A thermocouple is a type of temperature sensor, which is made by joining two

dissimilar metals at one end. The joined end is referred to as the HOT JUNCTION.
The other end of these dissimilar metals is referred to as the COLD END or COLD
JUNCTION. The cold junction is actually formed at the last point of thermocouple
material

Specification:-

1. Chromel Aliumel Thermocouple

2. Thermometer: Glass type, Range : 0 – 100 0C.
3. Digital Indicator with minimum-maximum calibration.
4. Electric heater with bowl.

Department of Mechanical Engineering SVKM’S iot, Dhule.

Procedure:-
1. Connect the terminal of Thermocouple to the digital display unit.
2. Connect the display unit to power supply and switch ON the power.
3. Pour some water in the bowl and place it on the heater.
4. Now switch ON the electric heater and wait for few minutes so that water starts
heating.
5. Take the ambient temperature readings of thermometer and Thermocouple
before starting the experiment.
6. Once the thermometer shows a reading of 30 to 350C temperature rise, then
slowly insert Thermocouple inside the bowl.
7. Note the initial readings of thermometer and Thermocouple and enter it in the
observation table.
8. For every 50 rise note down the readings and enter it in the observation table.
The readings should be taken after water temperature rises above 350C and upto
maximum 900C.
9. After completing the experiment switch OFF the electric heater, display unit.
10. Empty the bowl and ice flask after completing the experiment.

MINIMUM AND MAXIMUM CALIBRATION METHOD

1. Connect the output terminal of Thermocouple to the digital display unit.
2. Connect the display unit to power supply and switch ON the power.
3. Pour some water in the bowl and place it on the heater.
4. Now switch ON the electric heater and wait for few minutes so that water
starts heating.
5. Place some ice/cold water in the ice flask.
6. Insert the thermometer and thermocouple in the ice/cold flask. Note down the
initial minimum temperature. With the help of potentiometer on the display unit
adjust the value of temperature equal to the value shown on the thermometer.
This will set indicator for minimum temperature.
7. Once the water starts boiling note down the temperature on the thermometer.
Insert the thermocouple in the water and note down the reading on the display
unit and adjust it with the maximum potentiometer.

Department of Mechanical Engineering SVKM’S iot, Dhule.

8. Once this setting is done experiment can be conducted accordingly. Repeat this
procedure for 4 – 5 times for better results and accuracy.
