Circadian Lighting (human centric)

The Circadian Rhythm

The daily light-dark cycle governs rhythmic changes in the behavior and/or physiology of most species. Studies have found that these
changes are governed by a biological clock, the circadian clock. The circadian cycles have a period of approximately 24 hours. In
addition, these circadian cycles can be synchronized to external time signals but also can persist in the absence of such signals.

Circadian rhythmicity is present in the sleeping and feeding patterns of animals, including human beings. There are also clear patterns of
core body temperature, brain wave activity, hormone production, cell regeneration, and other biological activities. The classic phase
markers for measuring the timing of a mammal's circadian rhythm are the melatonin secretion by the pineal gland, the core body
temperature minimum and the plasma level of cortisol. Circadian rhythms are produced by natural factors within the body, but they are
also affected by signals from the environment. Light is the main cue influencing circadian rhythms, turning on or turning off genes that
control an organism's internal clocks. Disruptions of the biological rhythms can impair the health and well-being of the organism.
