Title of Activity:​ Grid Drawing Practice

Date Scheduled: ​4/16/19

Grade Level: ​7th and 8th ​Approximate Time: ​30-45 mins

Materials Needed: ​eye picture, mouth picture, nose picture, grid paper, ruler, pencil,
printed artwork cut out

TEKS: ​7.2 C (and 8.2 C) produce drawings, paintings, prints, [etc.] using a variety of art
materials and tools in traditional and experimental ways

Objectives: ​The student will piece together famous paintings and draw from a grid to
understand the mechanics of portrait grid drawing and scaling to size.

Anticipatory Setting: ​Cut up different art works and have them piece it together like a
puzzle in 30 seconds.

Instructional Input: ​Cut up different art works and have them piece it together like a
puzzle in 30 seconds. After that show a youtube video of a time lapse portrait grid
drawing and go over the steps together. Then draw an eye together on a grid using a
document camera to show how to do it on the board. Then have students draw a mouth
and nose on a grid independently. They must bring their nose drawing up and get a
check before they can move on to the mouth.

Modeling: ​Show a youtube video of someone using a grid to draw a portrait

Check for Understanding: ​Go over steps together after video

Guided Practice: ​Draw an eye using a grid together on the document camera

Independent Practice: ​Draw a mouth and nose using a grid independently

Assessment: ​Check their nose drawing before I give them their paper for the mouth
drawing

Closing: ​Have students turn in all three drawings before leaving class
