Basis for Choosing an MBA Specialization

In the world of management education which is bugged with myriad choices, two important
aspects make a huge difference in the end - the institution and the specialization. Choosing a
specialization is the only question that keeps toiling around in the brains of MBA students
during the first two semesters. Following are some points that should be kept in mind while
deciding on a specialization..

1. Know Your Strengths

Know your strengths and do a self-analysis of things you are good at. Know the fields your
preferred B-School is popular. There are multiple specializations available today but it’s
important that you choose your field of specialization based on your personality, skills, and
career goals. But, what you’re interested in is the most important factor to be considered.

2. Focus on your Long-Term Goals

There are many core functions such as business leadership, marketing, finance or HR
depending on your skills. Initially, you must focus on how the specialization will boost your
career, and whether you can expect long term employability, rather than being carried away
with here-today-gone-tomorrow specializations.

3. Understand the Salary Figures

Learn about the salary figures of your business school for every specialization. But, do not let
the salary structure be the only criteria if you’re really serious about your MBA. If salary
figures are great for a specialization but you are too weak to grasp and perform in that vertical,
do not choose it. Only if you get paid for what you enjoy doing, you can utilize your skills in
the best possible manner. This way, you can benefit yourself as well as the organization you
are associated with.

4. Know From the Faculty Member

Learn more about the faculty who will be teaching you the respective subjects. Consider all
these factors and then come to a conclusion. Early in the course of management education, you
must deeply analyze the contents covered under each specialization. This will help you in
choosing the right specialization, developing specific skills and in making an informed career
choice at the right time.

3|Page
SUMMER INTERNSHIP PROJECT BOOKLET
To conclude, the combination of the specialization and the association with a particular
industry or sector makes a certain amount of difference in terms of individual success or
mediocrity. But let us be assured of the fact that whatever specialization we choose, it will
require considerable hard work to excel and succeed which will help you transform from
competent professionals to inspired business leaders.

Summer Internship Project

A summer internship report is a documentation of a student's work — a record of the original

work done by the student in the summer internship of 8 week duration. The objective of this
document is to provide a set of guidelines that help a student to prepare the report to satisfy the
requirements of internship report. MBA Summer Internships provide the hands on experience
to all the students. This helps the students in getting better informed about their interests and
the field they would want to work in. This finally enables the students to make a better career
choice when the time of Final Placements comes.

Importance of Summer Internship Project

Here are just a few reasons why internships are investments in your future:

1) Real world experience: Joining a company as an intern gives you the opportunity to work
hands on in a professional environment. Internships help by teaching you more about the career
path you are pursuing. Think of it like this – internships are a way to test drive possible jobs
and explore different career options.

2) Networking: Internships often give you the opportunity to attend meetings and events. By
interacting with professionals you gain new connections and learn how to communicate in a
professional environment. Personally, my internships have introduced me to a lot of useful
resources and have given me the opportunity to meet a variety of professionals in my field.
Networking has helped me acquire references and find new job opportunities. Internships can
even provide you with a professional mentor.

3) Resume Builder: As a college student I know the importance of a strong resume. Without
a solid resume it can be tougher to be considered for a position. And how can you have a strong
resume without any experience? Internships are key to building experience as a student or
recent graduate. Employers are much more likely to hire someone with internships and work
experience rather than someone with a generic resume, lacking experience.

4|Page
SUMMER INTERNSHIP PROJECT BOOKLET
4) Time Management: As an intern you'll become a master of time management. When you're
working in a fast paced professional environment you need to know every minute counts. Time
management is vital in every circumstance whether you're attending meetings, finishing tasks
on deadlines, making phone calls et al.

5) Career Foundation: Internships provide you with the building blocks you need for your
future. Many internship opportunities help set the foundation for your career. It is important
that you choose you internships based on your interests and career prospects. As an intern you
have the opportunity to get your foot in the door with a company.

6) The Opportunity to Learn More about Yourself:

“Knowing yourself is the beginning of all wisdom.” – Aristotle

The experiences we go through are what shape us. Your internship will not only encourage
personal development, but also greater understanding of self. To know yourself is to know your
goals and how to best achieve them. Finding this level of clarity is difficult, but sometimes all
it takes is trying someone new, out of your comfort zone.

7) Internships offer opportunities to transition into full-time positions: Although, it is not

guaranteed, most employers are always seeking to add value to their organization. With an
internship, you’re given the opportunity to showcase your talents, commitment, and value to a
prospective employer. Furthermore, employers are more inclined to hire you once they have
invested time and money to train you.

8) Gain confidence: Internships allow you to test out specific techniques learned in the
classroom before entering the working world. It’s an opportunity to apply what you have
learned in a safe environment where mistakes are expected – rather than learn the hard way in
your first job out of college.

Objectives of Summer Internship Project

• To assist the student's development of employer-valued skills such as teamwork,

communications and attention to detail.

• To offer the opportunity for the young students to acquire on job the skills, knowledge,
attitudes, and perceptions along with the experience needed to constitute a professional
identity.

• To provide means to immerse students in actual supervised professional experiences

5|Page

SUMMER INTERNSHIP PROJECT BOOKLET
At the end of Second Semester each student shall undertake a Summer Internship Project
(SIP) for 8 weeks. It is mandatory for the student to seek advance written approval from
the faculty guide and the Director of the Institute about the topic and organization before
commencing the SIP. The SIP may or may not have a Functional Focus, i.e. the student may
take up a SIP in his/her intended area of specialization or in any other functional area of
management. Ideally the SIP should exhibit a cross-functional orientation. The student shall
submit a written structured report based on work done during this period.

SIP can be carried out in:

a) Corporate Entity
b) NGO
c) SME
d) Government Undertaking
e) Cooperative Sector
SIP may be a research project – based on primary / secondary data or may be an operational
assignment involving working by the student on a given task/assignment/project/ etc. in an
organization / industry. It is expected that the SIP shall sensitize the students to the demands
of the workplace. The learning outcomes and utility to the organization must be specifically
highlighted.

The report should be well documented and supported by –

1. Executive Summary
2. Organization profile
3. Outline of the problem/task undertaken
4. Research methodology & data analysis (in case of research projects only)
5. Relevant activity charts, tables, graphs, diagrams, etc.

9|Page
SUMMER INTERNSHIP PROJECT BOOKLET
The completion of the SIP shall be certified by the respective Faculty Guide & approved by
the Director of the Institute. The external organization (Corporate / NGO/ SME/ Government
Entity/ Cooperative/ etc.) shall also certify the SIP work.

The student shall submit TWO hard copies & one soft copy (CD) of the project report
before 30th September in Sem III. One hard copy is to be returned to the student by the
Institute after the External Viva-Voce.

• Actual work undertaken by the student
• Student’s understanding of the organization and business environment
• Outcome of the project
• Utility of the project to the organization
• Basic analytical capabilities

responsibility of guiding you. The final report preparation is your responsibility and the guide
will act only as a facilitator. In the absence of any work done by the student, the guide will
have complete authority to reject the project until the said student provides the data as per the
requirement of SIP.

b) Number of Copies: The final SIP report to be submitted in 02 hard copies and one soft copy
(CD), to the respective internal guide of the institute. Only on acceptance of draft project report
accepted by the Internal Guide, the student should make the final copies. Duly signed and
accepted by the guide.

or suggest modifications for resubmission.
