THE PROBLEM AND ITS SETTING
Introduction
citizen in our community. With that being said, education can be a determining factor on
whether or not one succeeds in life. However, that is not always the case, as some very
successful people namely: Steve Jobs, Mark Zuckerberg and Bill Gates, all of which are
billionaire, and are successful without obtaining a college degree and still is able to pursue
their desired careers, and also earning more than the average worker with a college degree.
Realistically, most people are not as smart as the aforementioned three which made the three
successful in the first place, and that is also the reason why a college education is essential to
The research aims to examine whether for one to be able to obtain a college
degree or even attend college classes, he/she must be financially secured as most college
classes require vast amounts of payments that often lead one to have student loans in which
they will have a difficult time to clear. Further implying the impact of the financial resources
parents have on their children's educational attainment. The author also states: "Cohort
comparisons show that the influence of financial resources has disappeared since 1950 and that
the influence of cultural resources, which was small before 1950, became even smaller after
1950. The association between parents' participation in high culture and children's educational
stature proves to be spurious, although it may be true, the same could not said when it comes to
the Philippines. The Philippines which is historically a third world country and continues to
develop are not comparable to the Netherlands (the country in which De Graaf's research is
derived from). The research aims to give a better insight on individuals who are affected by
Driven by these reasons, the researchers will undertake this study to determine
series of methods to further comprehend and prove or disprove the existence of the correlation
between the financial stature of the student's parents and their academical attainment.
Theoretical framework
Ludwig Von Bertalanffy which states that financial is a broad term that describes two related
activities: the study how money is managed and how student need money to pursue collage. It
relates the financial stature for the students to continue to go to college. As adapted in this
study, the financial stature (Inputs) are admitted into the university, with different admission
points, from different level in the society and courses that they want in college, when they get
into college money affect student to their financial stature the management of the university
transforms them through the process of teaching and learning and the students output is seen
According to the input-output model, it is assumed that the students with high admission
points, high social economic background and good school background will perform well if the

university facilities are good, the lecturers and the management of the university is good which
may not always be the case and this is the shortcoming of this theory. According to Oso and
Onen (2005), the interrelationships among parts of a system have to be understood by all parties
involved. This theory requires a shared vision so that all people in the university have an idea of
what they are trying to achieve from all parties involved, a task that is not easy to achieve.
Conceptual Framework
This shows the linkage between different factors and academic performance. It shows
that academic performance is an independent variable is related to the dependent and controlled
variables which are financial status of the student and respondents’ profile.

Related Literature
This section reviews the related literature on the concept of parents’ financial stature and
The financial stature or the social economic success is determined commonly by the
parent’s level of education, job position and amount of salary (Jeynes, 2002; McMillan &
Western, 200). Most often, studies conduct about the college access. It is not a surprise that the
8
financial stature is an important aspect when predicting the access to college. It is thoroughly
believed that with less financial stature a parent has, often results to a low chance providing their
child an access to a college education because of the aforementioned lower financial stature, as a
result it is preventing the child access to essential resources and creates unneeded stress at home .
(Eamon, 2005; Jeynes, 2002). According to Graetz (1995) “carried out a study on economic
status in education research and policy found that social economic background remains one of
the major sources of educational inequality and adds that one’s educational success depends very
In some cases, students in a university have been diagnosed with a learning disorder
which hinders their learning capability and thus, limiting the opportunities a college education
can grant them as they cannot compete in academics as well as normal students. Students with
learning disabilities have said in interviews that receiving special accommodations lessens the
difficulty in completing school related tasks such as assignments, projects etc. (Diedrich, 2016).
“Some students with learning disabilities go to college, and they want to manage on their
own,” says Karla McGregor, a professor in the UI Department of Communication Sciences and
Disorders and lead author of the study. “They don’t want the extra help.” Students with learning
they must go through screenings, tests and interviews to confirm that they indeed have a

disability. The process of confirming can cost around 5000 U.S. Dollars (Diedrich, 2016).
According to the National Center for Special Education Research, only 34 percentage of
students obtained the 4-year college degree within 8 years of finishing high-school, compared to
the 56 percentage of students nationally who have been reported to graduate within 6-years
(Diedrich, 2016).
Synthesis
Using the information derived from other researches, we can further conclude that there
is a significant correlation between the student’s financial stature and the possibility of attaining
a college education. Not only does it affect normal students, it also impacts the lives of those

Related Studies
The study examines the influence of age, financial status and gender on Academic
Performance among undergraduates. For the researchers to be able to guide this study, one
question was asked and three hypotheses were formulated and tested at 0.05 level of
significance. The design was correlational and simple random sampling was used to select
sample size of 175 respondents. The instrument used for this study has face and content validity.
10
Cronbach alpha was used to obtain reliability coefficient of 0.84. In addition to the instrument,
the cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of the respondents was collected from the
departmental office and marched with the names of the respondents. The findings of the study
reveal that gender, age and finance are not significant predictors of academic performance. There
was no significant difference in academic performance based on age, gender and financial status.
It was recommended that counselling centers should open to handle varying problems

The study was designed to investigate how financial status affects the academic
performance of the students enrolled in University of Cebu Maritime Education and Training
Center for a basis of college tuition planning. Emphasis was put on to try and to establish the
relationship between profile of the respondents, parents' financial status, school background and
academic performance of B-MT and B-Mare students at University of Cebu-METC). The study
employed the use of correlation design to establish the nature of these relationships.

emphasis on the empirical analysis to describe situation, condition, and variables manifested in
the study and how they are related to one another producing solution to specific questions. This
situation or problem or phenomenon; the correlational method tries to probe the significance of
relationship between two or more factors or characteristics (Bermudo, et al. 2010). To achieve
the purpose of this study, a survey method will be used in the form of questionnaire.
Sources of Data
The study were to have two sources of data, namely, primary and secondary. The primary
sources of data are the financial stature of senior high-school. Data gathered from the internet
which contained the related studies, literatures, books, journals, articles and other related materials
characteristics on which the sample seeks to draw inferences (Krishnaswamy, 2000). The total
number of individuals to whom the results of the research are intended to apply constitute the
research population. For the present study, the respondents were SHS of Nineveh Academy, both

11th grade to 12th grade ranging in age from 16 up to 19 years of age. To qualify for the study,
each of the respondents must be a student of senior high in Nineveh Academy. This criterion
ensured that the respondents must be able to answer the question. The researchers used simple
random sampling technique gathering the data from the delimited population of the study.
Participants were surveyed at a location where they’re found, the Nineveh Academy.

The researchers have developed and utilized a self-made questionnaire to gather the
needed information from the respondents with reference to their view towards the financial
stature or the student on whether or not they’ll pursue college. The instrument used by the

researcher was a questionnaire to gather needed data. Specific Questions was used as it is one of
the most common and appropriate sampling strategies in quantity research. All the student will
fill the questionnaires. The researcher used the questionnaire because the selected student is
literate and the time to collect data is limited. The researcher have developed closed-ended
questions because they are easy for the student to answer the following question to save some
time and keep the student focused on the subject. The selection of respondents was guided by the
following criteria: male or female student and newly enrolled in NINEVEH ACADEMY. The
