Chapter 1
THE PROBLEM AND ITS SETTING

Introduction

Education gives us many opportunities that can enable us to function as a useful

citizen in our community. With that being said, education can be a determining factor on

whether or not one succeeds in life. However, that is not always the case, as some very

successful people namely: Steve Jobs, Mark Zuckerberg and Bill Gates, all of which are

billionaire, and are successful without obtaining a college degree and still is able to pursue

their desired careers, and also earning more than the average worker with a college degree.

Realistically, most people are not as smart as the aforementioned three which made the three

successful in the first place, and that is also the reason why a college education is essential to

pursue your desired career.

The research aims to examine whether for one to be able to obtain a college

degree or even attend college classes, he/she must be financially secured as most college

classes require vast amounts of payments that often lead one to have student loans in which

they will have a difficult time to clear. Further implying the impact of the financial resources

parents have on their children's educational attainment. The author also states: "Cohort

comparisons show that the influence of financial resources has disappeared since 1950 and that

the influence of cultural resources, which was small before 1950, became even smaller after

1950. The association between parents' participation in high culture and children's educational

attainment proves to be spurious." The statement suggests correlation of parents' financial

2

SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL DEPARTMENT

stature proves to be spurious, although it may be true, the same could not said when it comes to

the Philippines. The Philippines which is historically a third world country and continues to

develop are not comparable to the Netherlands (the country in which De Graaf's research is

derived from). The research aims to give a better insight on individuals who are affected by

their and their parents' financial stature.

Driven by these reasons, the researchers will undertake this study to determine

series of methods to further comprehend and prove or disprove the existence of the correlation

between the financial stature of the student's parents and their academical attainment.

Theoretical framework

This theory is anchored based on System’s Theory Input-Output Model (1956) by

Ludwig Von Bertalanffy which states that financial is a broad term that describes two related

activities: the study how money is managed and how student need money to pursue collage. It

relates the financial stature for the students to continue to go to college. As adapted in this

study, the financial stature (Inputs) are admitted into the university, with different admission

points, from different level in the society and courses that they want in college, when they get

into college money affect student to their financial stature the management of the university

transforms them through the process of teaching and learning and the students output is seen

through their academic performance.

According to the input-output model, it is assumed that the students with high admission

points, high social economic background and good school background will perform well if the
NINEVEH ACADEMY

SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL DEPARTMENT

university facilities are good, the lecturers and the management of the university is good which

may not always be the case and this is the shortcoming of this theory. According to Oso and

Onen (2005), the interrelationships among parts of a system have to be understood by all parties

involved. This theory requires a shared vision so that all people in the university have an idea of

what they are trying to achieve from all parties involved, a task that is not easy to achieve.

Conceptual Framework

This shows the linkage between different factors and academic performance. It shows

that academic performance is an independent variable is related to the dependent and controlled

variables which are financial status of the student and respondents’ profile.

Statement of the Problem

This study will determine the financial stature of students and on whether they pursue

college education or not. Specifically, this answered the following sub-problems:

1. What would be the reasons that affect the students desires and capability in pursuing a

college degree?
2. Why investigate the financial state senior high students?
3. Why should it be further elaborated to what impacts the financial status of a student

towards their desired course?

Scope and Delimitation

The study is delimited to the individuals of Senior High school students in Nineveh

Academy namely, grade 11 and 12. The researchers gathered the possible financial stature

information of the respondents, as it is the one factor that affects one’s capability of going to

college.

SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL DEPARTMENT

State of the Art

The literature and studies that were reviewed were found to have bearing on the present

study. They served as bases for the conceptualization the study’s research problem, research

design and research methodology.

Related Literature

This section reviews the related literature on the concept of parents’ financial stature and

its relationship to the accessibility of a college education of their children.

Financial Stature and College Education Accessibility

The financial stature or the social economic success is determined commonly by the

parent’s level of education, job position and amount of salary (Jeynes, 2002; McMillan &

Western, 200). Most often, studies conduct about the college access. It is not a surprise that the
8
financial stature is an important aspect when predicting the access to college. It is thoroughly

believed that with less financial stature a parent has, often results to a low chance providing their

child an access to a college education because of the aforementioned lower financial stature, as a

result it is preventing the child access to essential resources and creates unneeded stress at home .

(Eamon, 2005; Jeynes, 2002). According to Graetz (1995) “carried out a study on economic

status in education research and policy found that social economic background remains one of

the major sources of educational inequality and adds that one’s educational success depends very

strongly on the financial status of the parents”.

Financial Status Affects Success of Students with Learning Disabilities.

NINEVEH ACADEMY
“The Home of Academic Champions”
Brookeside Lane, San Francisco, City of General Trias, Cavite

SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL DEPARTMENT

In some cases, students in a university have been diagnosed with a learning disorder

which hinders their learning capability and thus, limiting the opportunities a college education

can grant them as they cannot compete in academics as well as normal students. Students with

learning disabilities have said in interviews that receiving special accommodations lessens the

difficulty in completing school related tasks such as assignments, projects etc. (Diedrich, 2016).

“Some students with learning disabilities go to college, and they want to manage on their

own,” says Karla McGregor, a professor in the UI Department of Communication Sciences and

Disorders and lead author of the study. “They don’t want the extra help.” Students with learning

disabilities must self-identify themselves in order to receive special accommodations, however

they must go through screenings, tests and interviews to confirm that they indeed have a
9
disability. The process of confirming can cost around 5000 U.S. Dollars (Diedrich, 2016).

According to the National Center for Special Education Research, only 34 percentage of

students obtained the 4-year college degree within 8 years of finishing high-school, compared to

the 56 percentage of students nationally who have been reported to graduate within 6-years

(Diedrich, 2016).

Synthesis

Using the information derived from other researches, we can further conclude that there

is a significant correlation between the student’s financial stature and the possibility of attaining

a college education. Not only does it affect normal students, it also impacts the lives of those

with learning disabilities, as it costs more diagnose students with learning incapabilities. Thus,

limiting the overall potential of the aforementioned students.

Related Studies

Influence of Age, Financial Status, and Gender on Academic Performance among

Undergraduates (E.E. Ebanuwah-Okoh, 2017)

The study examines the influence of age, financial status and gender on Academic

Performance among undergraduates. For the researchers to be able to guide this study, one

question was asked and three hypotheses were formulated and tested at 0.05 level of

significance. The design was correlational and simple random sampling was used to select

sample size of 175 respondents. The instrument used for this study has face and content validity.
10
Cronbach alpha was used to obtain reliability coefficient of 0.84. In addition to the instrument,

the cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of the respondents was collected from the

departmental office and marched with the names of the respondents. The findings of the study

reveal that gender, age and finance are not significant predictors of academic performance. There

was no significant difference in academic performance based on age, gender and financial status.

It was recommended that counselling centers should open to handle varying problems

confronting student irrespective of age, financial status or gender.

Financial Status and Academic Performance: Basis for a Propose College Tuition Planning

(Dumaran M.D., Zamora D. J., Heramil J. P., Guirit, D., 2015, Cebu City, Philippines)

The study was designed to investigate how financial status affects the academic

performance of the students enrolled in University of Cebu Maritime Education and Training

Center for a basis of college tuition planning. Emphasis was put on to try and to establish the

relationship between profile of the respondents, parents' financial status, school background and

academic performance of B-MT and B-Mare students at University of Cebu-METC). The study

employed the use of correlation design to establish the nature of these relationships.

11

Gap/s Bridged by the Present Study

From the above review of related literature and studies, the following gaps will be

determined:
NINEVEH ACADEMY
“The Home of Academic Champions”
Brookeside Lane, San Francisco, City of General Trias, Cavite

SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL DEPARTMENT

 There were no available studies about financial stature of senior high student on whether

or not they pursue a college degree.

 There was no study yet conducted on the financial stature of SHS students in Nineveh

Academy.
 There was no study yet conducted on the between the financial stature and accessibility

towards college education.

In view of the identified gaps, the present study is determined to look on the financial stature

of senior high students in Nineveh Academy on whether or not to pursue college.

12

Chapter 3
RESEARCH AND METHODOLOGY

This chapter discusses the research design and methodology of the study. It shows how

the procedural operations of the research problem of this study are to be answered.

Research Design
NINEVEH ACADEMY
“The Home of Academic Champions”
Brookeside Lane, San Francisco, City of General Trias, Cavite

SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL DEPARTMENT

The researchers have utilized the descriptive-correlational method of research, with

emphasis on the empirical analysis to describe situation, condition, and variables manifested in

the study and how they are related to one another producing solution to specific questions. This

type of research endeavors to describe systematically, factually, accurately, and objectively a

situation or problem or phenomenon; the correlational method tries to probe the significance of

relationship between two or more factors or characteristics (Bermudo, et al. 2010). To achieve

the purpose of this study, a survey method will be used in the form of questionnaire.

Sources of Data

The study were to have two sources of data, namely, primary and secondary. The primary

sources of data are the financial stature of senior high-school. Data gathered from the internet

which contained the related studies, literatures, books, journals, articles and other related materials

served as secondary sources of data.

13

Population of the Study

Population or universe is the aggregate of all units possessing certain specified

characteristics on which the sample seeks to draw inferences (Krishnaswamy, 2000). The total

number of individuals to whom the results of the research are intended to apply constitute the

research population. For the present study, the respondents were SHS of Nineveh Academy, both
NINEVEH ACADEMY
“The Home of Academic Champions”
Brookeside Lane, San Francisco, City of General Trias, Cavite

SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL DEPARTMENT

11th grade to 12th grade ranging in age from 16 up to 19 years of age. To qualify for the study,

each of the respondents must be a student of senior high in Nineveh Academy. This criterion

ensured that the respondents must be able to answer the question. The researchers used simple

random sampling technique gathering the data from the delimited population of the study.

Participants were surveyed at a location where they’re found, the Nineveh Academy.

14

Instrumentation and Validation

The researchers have developed and utilized a self-made questionnaire to gather the

needed information from the respondents with reference to their view towards the financial

stature or the student on whether or not they’ll pursue college. The instrument used by the
NINEVEH ACADEMY
“The Home of Academic Champions”
Brookeside Lane, San Francisco, City of General Trias, Cavite

SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL DEPARTMENT

researcher was a questionnaire to gather needed data. Specific Questions was used as it is one of

the most common and appropriate sampling strategies in quantity research. All the student will

fill the questionnaires. The researcher used the questionnaire because the selected student is

literate and the time to collect data is limited. The researcher have developed closed-ended

questions because they are easy for the student to answer the following question to save some

time and keep the student focused on the subject. The selection of respondents was guided by the

following criteria: male or female student and newly enrolled in NINEVEH ACADEMY. The

researcher providing the following question that the respondents be able to answer by their own

understanding. Since the study intends to measure the respondent’s academic performance,

questions have been selected according to the level of the financial status of the respondents

which will be tested.

After formulating the questionnaire or guide questions, it will be brought to the panel of

experts for critiquing and validation.

After the necessary revisions had been made, the contents of the questionnaire will be
15
finalized, reproduced, and distributed to the respondents for the gathering of data.

Data Gathering Procedure

After the validation of the instrument which was be utilized in the study, the researchers

had gone through the process of evaluating for students, gaining access and establishing rapport,
NINEVEH ACADEMY
“The Home of Academic Champions”
Brookeside Lane, San Francisco, City of General Trias, Cavite

SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL DEPARTMENT

which are all important to procedure good data (Creswell, 2017). Ethical consideration was

maintained throughout the course study by giving careful attention and respect for the

procurement of the necessary data.

The researchers personally asked for consent, set-up appointments, gone through careful

observation, and considered the willingness of the student before conducting the survey.

The researchers explained the procedures and assured each student that their responses

were completely anonymous and confidential for their safety.

If there’s a circumstance that a student is taking the survey with another student at the

same time, they were encouraged not to compare, discuss or observe their mate’s answers.

Violations of this control may result in tendencies toward centralization of students causing

inaccuracy and thereby lower the usefulness of the inventory in its ability to measure incongruent

beliefs of the respondent. Once the respondents had answered them, it was collected. The

gathered data from the questionnaire/ guide questions will be tallied, tabulated, and interpreted.

Reflection

To Andal, Khimberly while I was during the thesis it was very difficult to complete it. It was a

thesis about a poor community.

For Bordaje Rosa In this research I gain more knowledge and to know more everything about

the stature also this research you should give your deeper understanding and time because this

research is not a simple research only and in this research you gain a moral lesson.

According to Evanghelio Andrea conducting a research is not easy you must have deep

understanding to the topic that you choose ,in our research I further understand that

nowadays as we observe there are a lot of students choose not to go to college for some

reason to those children and parent they couldn't send them to school because of the

financial stature of a student .I learned the must important thing is to value the education

because I believe that education is the passport of our success.

For Doria Sany, The things that i learned that strategic system about purchasing, invesment, and

management of assets, which based on accounting and economics. Analyzing financial

statements is important part of the decision making because finance and the valuation of

profits. Personal finance management has become the least practiced subject among

millenials today even though it is one of the most talked about subjects in world. This fact

remains these are all just excuses and everyone could come up with a thousand reason why

they cannot and would never be able to put some money aside of savings or investment.

SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL DEPARTMENT

We know from basic economics that human needs are insatiable, no matter how much you

have, you will still not be satisfied

To Gard eElaiza , The most profound thing I learned from my research is that when searching

for the articles the problem will never be that you cant find any but rather that there is too

many to even look through. This calls for the need to do excessive narrowing by what

exactly you are looking for as well as being as specific as you can. I feel I was fairly lucky

that most of the articles I found didn’t take excessive searching to find but the potential for

a difficult situation definitely stands. I also learned the the best sources are peer reviewed

journals. This is for many reasons including legitimacy but overall they seem to have more

precise information that is useful for a research project.

Based on Reyes Rain , Some of the college students feel stressed about their personal finances.

Nearly 60 percent said they worry about having enough money to pay for school, while half are

concerned about paying their monthly expenses. I learn here that the student and parents

must be financially ready in entering in college life. And possible unexpected payments

To Songalia Sebastian Rafael, I was not expecting this kind of research but I still have to do it

anyways. I was challenge at first but overcome it as we all work together in order to sort

things out. And we enjoyed it very much because there was teamwork and the research was

more than it seems. It brings out more when we read it.
