Chapter 3

I. Statement of the Problem

In today’s present way of taking notes as a professor and as a student, we often

have a hard time copying or jotting down notes from a certain class, seminars,

workshops or etc. especially in our fast paced present lifestyle where each second of

our time is really important in the sense of we need to do things fast and we need to

get something done on schedule which is really hard to do if the students, professors

and teachers are having a hard time taking down notes. But with this newly improved

Smart Note Taker that is developed to be used for educational purposes, copying,

jotting or taking down notes will be a lot more easier task than the usual or than the

traditional way of doing it and it will be more faster in terms of taking down notes

whenever you need it.

Ever evolving technology requires enhancements and features to keep up with

every user’s lifestyle. Educational systems in particular have introduced many ways

and processes to improve learning. The Smart Note - Taker is a take on the innovative

enhancement to online education. The device has allowed lecturers from different

universities and colleges to maximize presentations and discussions on a new level.

Students, on the other hand are more updated with the trend of technology as statistics

have told that 94% of students are on their smartphones every hour. As the university

- wide are more updated, the trend in online education innovates as current with the

promising Smart Note - Taker proposed.

II. Theoretical Framework

Figure 1. Block diagram of smart note taker [15]

Figure above shows the block diagram of a Smart Note - Taker. [13]

The figure above shows how the Smart Note Taker works from it’s sensors up to the

external pc or mobile.

III. METHODOLOGY

Project Design

The project design of the Smart Note Taker will be the following, this also

includes the applications that the Smart Note Taker may use for doing its purpose

and use:

1. Figure Processing
An instance where the Smart Note - Taker can play an important role is when

two people are apart and are talking to each other i.e. a Skype meeting, an

interview, both want to send symbols and figures by viewing so describing is just

an option now with Figure Processing feature of the product, presentations are no

hassle.

Call subscribers, professors and students can use this feature since the figure

can be processed and sent directly to the server computer in the room. The server

computer then broadcasts the drawn shape through network to all of the

computers or note - takers present in the room. [13]

2. Language Recognition

Current Smart Note - Takers can recognize up to twenty - two (22) different

languages. Proposed product can also do the same however detects more than 22

languages. Making the device more adaptable to students and professors around

the world. Education simply cannot be limited to one language or country.

Languages such as - English - Canada, English - GB, English - US, German,

Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, Korean, Danish, Spanish, Spanish -

Mexico, Finnish, French, Frech - Canada, Greek, Italian, Japanese, Dutch,

Norwegian, Portugese, Portugese - Brazil, Russian, Swedish. [13]

3. Notification System

The Canvas Application and the Blackboard’s notification system is pretty

simple because it will just pop out of your phone or any other gadget’s home

screen and lock screen and notify its user of what the professor or the instructor

have posted or uploaded in the Canvas App. which is pretty effective for the user

to be reminded if something is up to do or to be done in certain subject. The

Smart Note Taker will also have a self alarming system also by the use of light on

the rear side of the pen which will alert the user whenever there is something that

is posted or uploaded in the Canvas App.

4. Blackboard

Blackboard Inc. provides education software solutions. The Company

offers online program management, managed hosting, enterprise and

platform consulting, training, and student services. Blackboard serves

learners worldwide. An application software industry focused on technology

founded on January 14, 1998 in Washington DC, United States of America.

Dr. William L. Ballhaus “Bill” is the Chairman/President/CEO of the

company. [14]

The application software is currently being used by students and

professors in colleges and universities in the Philippines. University of Sto.

Tomas and Mapúa University are among those. Proposed product not only

benefits the university wherein researchers are currently enrolled in however

other institutions can also have the same convenience the product offers.

6. Canvas

In our educational institution, Far Eastern University – Institute of

Technology, the Canvas application software by Instructure Inc. is being

implemented and utilized by both students and professors. Enabling online

education a free and convenient choice for the whole university, Canvas fully

engages available materials and features.

Instructure Inc. provides online education technology. The Company

offers products assisting in grading assignments, integrating calendars, and

editing content, as well as communication notifications, a variety of teaching

tools, group studies, online testing, assignment submission, chat, and student

reporting tools. Instructure serves the education industry in the United States.

Founded on September 18, 2008 at Utah, United States of America by

Chairman Joshua L. Coates. [15]

IV. Data Analysis

4.1. Architecture

Drawings and outputs can be written and put together in a single java

applet program since it is supported by these types of applications.

4.2. Technical definition

Since the gadget is closely connected to the Personal Computer, it needs to

meet the standard of the product. we need an operating system like Windows

or Linux to satisfy the software requirements of the said gadget and it needs a

compatibility test in order to create a flawless output in terms of memory

storage.

4.3. Software Algorithm

The software that will be used is applet because it can perform one specific

task with a dedicated engine.

4.4. Project Layout

V. Operations and Maintainance Safety

The Smart Note Taker is not that harmless as such, since it only uses small

voltages and current, but it can still be harmful to a user in a certain misuse of this

device. The Smart Note Taker should always be dry when in use or when charging to

avoid static electric phenomena that can take place. The Smart Note Taker should

always be charged properly, not overcharged to avoid power issues just like any

devices.

VI. Design Constraints

The following will the design constraints of the Smart Note Taker that will

take place:

1. Economic
The economical effect of this device will help our country, the

Philippines. By the invention of this device, plastic and hardware materials

are needed. This device will also help boost our country’s economy

because of the new way or innovative way of taking down or writing down

notes with the use of the Smart Note Taker that will help any worker,

educator and students do and finish a work more effectively and fast

which makes any progress of a certain task better and faster than the usual

way.

2. Environmental

With the invention of this device, the group believes that the

environment will benefit in a way that there will be less paper to utilize

when the Smart Note - Taker is to be commercialized. This product does not

use paper so it will help lessen the trees cut down to produce paper thus

making it an eco-friendly device. Also, some materials used for the

production of Smart Note - Taker are made from recycled plastics which also

lessens the plastics dumped every year all over the world.

3. Sustainability

The power source is a Lithium battery which can be changed easily

change since it is chargeable and can be found in almost all convenience

stores. Lithium battery is preferred over AAA battery because it lasts longer,

can take extremely cold or extremely hot temperatures and it weighs lighter

than the compared battery.

4. Manufacturability
The product is exclusive for colleges and universities that are in

partnership with CANVAS and BLACKBOARD. Since the components'

prices are expensive, it will be bought in bulk orders. Additionally, it will be

preordered with a certain number of quantity depending on the colleges' or

universities' need. Producing this gadget will take at least one to two weeks

prior to the schematic diagram design and its respective subscriptions.
