NATIONAL READING MONTH NARRATIVE REPORT

In showance of support to the Department of Education’s goal of

promoting Every Child a Reader, San Luis Elementary school is enjoined in
celebrating the National Reading Month with the theme “Nasa Pagbasa ang
Pag-asa”. The event focused on promoting the pupil’s love for reading.
For the first week of the month, Read-A-thon was conducted in the
classrooms from grades one to six. Pupils engaged in Story Retelling, Oral
Reading Interpretation and Team Reading.

In the second week, ‘read a book with a friend’ was implemented.

Every ten o’clock in the morning, the school bell sounded signaling the start
of the 20-minute reading. This doesn’t only engaged students to learning
moreso it builds camaraderie among them.

On the third week, teachers and photojournalist caught those pupils

reading alone or in group. They were given credits for this. Grade six and
grade five pupils also helped in the remediation classes of grade one,
especially those who had a difficulty in reading.

San Luis Elementary School held programs to culminate the

celebration, to observe the Nationwide Reading Month and to showcase the
pupil’s capability in terms of reading. Last November 20, 2015 at nine o ‘
clock in the morning, the pupils costumed with manila paper - made story
book characters. The program proper formally started with a doxology by
selected Grades IV – VI pupils followed by the singing of our National
Anthem. An opening remarks was given by Mrs. Jessiebel V. Libot, English
Coordinator who reiterated how important reading is in our lives, as such,
she said that it’s a wrong notion if we will assume that reading skills will
just develop as a matter of course, thus, we really have to help our children
to have a reading habit and grasp of books. Then, here were the set of
activities presented by the pupils. A word formation contest before the
program ended made the intermediate pupils lively as they participated. The
presentations and activities made reading a shared experience by the pupils,
teachers and parents. In addition, in the midst of the activities Mrs. Noime
T. Mercadal – the school principal gave a message. With Mrs. Felipa
Maligalig in a closing prayer the program was successfully done.

Reading should not be presented to children as a chore or duty. It

should be offered to them as a precious gift. And so let us remind our
children that whenever they read a good
book, somewhere in the world a door opens
